Playing devil's advocate, okay?

Please no insults and no references to my intelligence or lack thereof.....Nah, never mind!...Asking for mercy is just pouring gasoline on a fire.

Three times in the past 11 seasons the starting QB went down early in the season and it was all over, crash and burn. It would have been four seasons but a fourth round draft choice miraculously had one of the best rookie seasons in history, who expected that?

The Cowboys rolled out a slew of backups, mostly average quarterbacks when they were in their prime. Sometimes they were on one year contracts meaning that, even if they had a good showing, they were gone the following season.

Why not kill two birds with one stone? Draft a top tier QB, if the starter goes down, the rookie gets experience. He could be a legitimate starter the following season in which case the Cowboys trade one of them. Furthermore, when a player gets paid they seem to have the tendency to play soft that season. A legitimate talent backing him up could put a little fire to Dak's backside.

The rookie salary cap allows the Cowboys to draft a QB in the top ten, I think.

You could draft a productive non-QB player in the top ten but what difference would that make if Dak is injured again or if he performs poorly? Look at the value of good young quarterbacks these days. If the Cowboys cultivate a young QB while he serves as a quality backup, the Cowboys could end up with a trade reaping great value for their future.

Look at the history of the Cowboys successful seasons. Where there not two legitimate starters?....Lebaron/Meredith...Staubach/Morton....Staubach/White....Even Roger Staubach once revealed that a reason for his success was how hard he competed with Danny White, knowing how good his competition was. Jimmy Johnson drafted two QB's #1 overall in his first season, giving up the #1 overall pick in 1990 for taking Steve Walsh in the supplemental draft. Jimmy valued competition.

Ok....let 'er rip!

If there is a legitimate franchise QB available, they would be dumb to pass him up. Anything other than taking a TE.

That worked out great for the eagles.
We have so many more needs then to draft a QB at #10.
Defense needs the help.

DUDE, the Cowboys just signed Dak to a Multi-year contract! Turn the key off and get the hell out of the garage before it’s too late. Jeez, this place never ceases to amaze.

For months now, I've been touting the fact that Trey Lance has the biggest upside of every QB in the draft....this fact has finally gained legs this week in the national media.

They just paid Dak the second most for a QB ever and gave him the most guaranteed money. Rookie QBs are relatively cheap but they don't stay that way but a few seasons. Is there a suggestion here that the Cowboys will be done with Dak in a few seasons?

We'd be spending a top 10 on a player most likely to sit the entire season. But let's say he plays 4 games. Great. We're better for 4 games.

Meanwhile, if we draft at a position of need we get a 16 game starter and are better for 16 games.

So, straight off we're better off for 12 games.
Then for the 4 games, will a rookie QB *not* getting starter snaps be that good? Give us a better net positive over replacement relative to a 10th round pick we're *starting* all season?

Rookie QB w/o starter snaps - replacement QB > 10th round pick starter - replacement player

I doubt it. We should get a better QB situation *for the games that Dak misses*. But you have to look at the full tradeoff. Full trade off not looking great.

For example, consider if we had traded Dak last summer and rolled with Dalton.
Obviously, Dak > Dalton.

But was Dak > Dalton + 30mil spent to improve the team + Dak trade value? I doubt it.

I appreciate something different to think about and discuss.
Thoughts to chew on, although I initially disagree, given the current circumstances.

Funny thing is for years the other three teams in our division have had 1st round QBs while we haven't, and yet we may have had the best of the lot... no to QB or TE for me in the 1st round this year.
We MAY have? You’re fricken Einstein and you say we MAY have?

Dak's deal was for 4-years 160 million. You want to add a top ten QB deal to that too? Maybe you want to move up to do this too? lol.

The Cowboys and Prescott agreed Monday to a four-year, $160 million extension, two people with knowledge of the contract told USA TODAY Sports. The people spoke on condition of anonymity since the team doesn’t publicly disclose terms. Prescott is guaranteed $126 million, including an NFL-record $66 million signing bonus. In total, he’ll net $75 million in 2021 – more than double his collective salary across his first five professional seasons.

Here's some of their recent salaries:

PICK TEAM PLAYER TOTAL CONTRACT SIGNING BONUS
1 Bengals Joe Burrow $36.0 million $23.9 million
2 Commanders Chase Young $34.6 million $22.7 million
3 Lions Jeff Okudah $33.5 million $21.9 million
4 Giants Andrew Thomas $32.3 million $21.1 million
5 Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa $30.3 million $19.6 million
6 Chargers Justin Herbert $26.6 million $16.9 million
7 Panthers Derrick Brown $23.6 million $14.7 million
8 Cardinals Isaiah Simmons $20.7 million $12.6 million
9 Jaguars CJ Henderson $20.5 million $12.5 million
10 Browns Jedrick Wills Jr. $19.7 million $11.9 million

Here's my thinking

If a highly valuable QB falls to 10, you trade.

If you can't find someone making a good deal, it's because they're bargaining with NY picking at 11 instead because they don't believe we'll take the QB.

So screw it. Take the QB and force people to come to you. Develop him in the meantime.

QBs are just so valuable that a promising but unknown prospect is going to pay off for you one way or another. Sam Darnold did as much busting as you can do in a few years with the Jets and NY still got 3 picks back. Make a guy like Lance look good in week 17 and you'll make a killing next offseason.

And if you can't manage to trade him then he's got 4 years to learn under Dak I guess, so we don't end up paying Dak 60M/yr in 2025. We've already given up the option to tag or trade Dak at any point so we'll get fleeced next time too unless we have another option.

But that's not gonna happen. You take Lance or whoever at 10 and you'll have multiple firsts in your pocket by day's end

A bit too late on this, the ship has sailed on this one. Jerry gave up everything but his next of kin....wish he would have done that too. We are saddled with Dak whether one likes it or not. Now if one comes available in three years, let's do this. But other than that, like they say a lot here, it is what it is.

If Dak was 32 or 33 yr old I would say okay maybe. But... hes not. You just signed him to a huge deal because he is your franchise QB for the next 4 to 5 years. You want ideally to get a day 1 starter with that high of a pick. Not a day 1 bench warmer. Not with the holes this team has.

@plasticman The Packers did something similar last year when they drafted QB Love. It torqued Rodgers off. Had the Packers drafted a player like WR Jefferson or another productive player in the first instead of a QB who sat the bench, they may have been SB champs.

Unfortunately, the team is stuck with Dak and his mega contract. Wasting time and money drafting a QB now.

Too late. old fellow, We are stuck with Dak for a while.
1. A QB. Early. At this stage? St, Vitticus Coriander!!! It makes little sense vis-à-visis (A Manchester word) and Dak's fragile (An Italian word) ego.
Moneywise it makes sense,vis-à-vis a rookie's salary... but ..
2. WE HAVE CRITICAL OTHER NEEDS VIS-à-VIS OL, LB,CORNER, SAFETY ETC (A KENYAN WORD)
