PFF has Conner Williams ranked 16th best Guard. Each team has 2 starting Guards. So if we take out Martin then there are only 15 guards rated higher. He might not be so bad. He is a FA next year I think

He’s not as bad as some here think
He’s a solid starter
Those are the types you don’t give second contracts to
You extend elite players and draft replacement for the rest
I like Williams more than most here but I think MCGovern can be just as good for less money and then when MCGovern comes up to get paid you replace him with another drafted young player
That how you afford to keep the Martin type players by churning the others till you end up with another elite guy
Those who think he’s a terrible player probably don’t watch other guards in this league play
He’s a solid player and if a team has a handful of elite and the rest solid they have a good roster

PFF.. Yuck.

Conner Williams is good at catch blocking.. When he gets a hold of a guy he can’t do nothing with them.

So I’m sure he will grade well because he’ll always be positioned well and does a nice job getting to the 2nd level.

I just prefer a Ron Leary type at guard because I want someone that can actually move people out of the way and not just leverage a guy and get little movement.

So unless this guy gets significantly stronger I think he’ll just continue to be ok regardless of what his stupid PFF score has to say.

Williams is a decent starting guard. He's no All-Pro, but you could do worse. Thing is, you could also do better and we should be aiming for that. I think he's gone after this season because he'll seek better pay than what we'll offer. So it would be in our best interest to figure out if McGovern can take over and be just as good or better, so we don't have question marks that force us to draft a guard early.

Williams is not as bad as many on here think. Though they think they know, but they don't.:popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:

However, an upgrade if McGovern emerges could be made. I can see a few OG's drafted next year.

"Though they think they know, but they don't."

Exactly.

But the Opinion Gatekeepers will continue on unfortunately regardless of the Mod's reminder threads on the supposedly understood mutual respect that is to be shown.

Williams is a solid starting guard.

He has limitations. He isn’t the strongest. He can’t really move the big huge DT’s.

but he has very good athleticism. Good in pass protection. Can get out and move and meet linebackers at the second level or pull.

overall he is a solid starter.

will be interesting to see if the cowboys can afford to keep him next year.

In terms of mobility, second and third level targeting, he's about has good as you get at his position in the NFL. Like most things Football, it's a question of scheme. What does our scheme require out of the position? Most fans have no idea what the answer to that question is. I'm guessing the team does, at least we hope so right? We'll see what they do.

Yeah, I think he's a lot better than the rep he's been given by this board.

Fine with moving on from him though.

He can be replaced and can probably get a good deal elsewhere.

I'm fine with Williams, but this team is better on the OL with maulers at OG.

One of the best OG's in the draft who was considered that mauler type, Wyatt Davis, fell to our pick in the 3rd, but the team went with Gholston instead, so I guess they're confident in Williams.

We really need someone to give a fair criticism on Conner Williams. Its clear PFF grades favor him. Fans consistently want to replace him. I'm sure somewhere in the middle is fair. I personally thought he looked ok last year.

Your evaluation is spot on in my opinion. He's OK. Not broken. Not a star. Not our biggest problem. Not our savior. He's OK.

We should continue to look to upgrade and be happy that he's OK while we do.

Huh? This makes absolutely no sense. If you don't give someone like Williams a second contract, they hit FA and get it elsewhere - if teams had your mindset, Williams' type players would never leave FA lol

You certainly DO resign players like Williams - if this ranking is accurate, not saying it is, that makes him a pretty good guard and "pretty good guards" are not exactly the easiest to come by. You resign good players if they ask for a reasonable contract and you let them walk if you think you can upgrade or if they ask beyond their worth. Simple.

Summed it. I'd replace him....not sure if he's bad enough for me to replace him with a top 10 pick though with other more pressing needs.
