In 1979, NFL Films famously created the moniker “America’s Team” for the Dallas Cowboys because of their tremendous popularity across the entire American landscape. Over 40 years later, the Cowboys are still enormously popular. Every Cowboys road stadium still contains a significant number of Cowboys fans. For decades, the Cowboys have usually continued to be a big draw for national TV ratings.

Despite 25 years of mediocrity and only 4 playoff wins- none beyond the wild card round- the Cowboys have remained popular. It’s a testament to the power of its brand that had been built since the success of the team in the 70s and 90s.

However, looking at some recent data from a couple of studies done at Murray State University and Emory State University about the popularity of sports teams, shows the Cowboys national popularity dipping. Among the all all important demographic of 18-34 year old fans, the Cowboys have dropped from their once dominant position.

Here’s some interesting data collected on the popularity of the Cowboys comparing its popularity in 1996 to 2020. Some interesting tidbits:
  • In 1996, the Cowboys were the most popular pro football team for fans in the 18-34 demographic. That year, a whopping 25% of fans listed the Cowboys as their favorite football team. The 49ers were a distant 2nd at 11.4%.
  • By 2020, the Cowboys were still in the top 5 most popular football teams, but their popularity among 18-34 year olds had dropped to 7.5%. (The pats were #1)
  • The NFL as a whole has become less popular among younger fans, although the reasons are not as clear.
Again, the Cowboys are still a very popular team in America. It shows the power of the iconic brand built over 60 seasons. If this team can ever get another deep playoff run going again, imagine how popular they would be. Winning cures all ills.

Here’s a link to the article that has a lot of this info. Most of the stats are toward the end.

The drop is fair weather fans being a part of that. There are many fans that will follow winning teams. That is also probably true of fans that followed the Cowboys as well. But I think most Cowboys fans stick with the Cowboys. Just as most Steelers and Packers fans.
Those Patriots fans now will now become KC fans, and how many bailed and became TB fans, at least as long as Tom Brady is there. Outside of NE area, how many Patriots fans has anyone really every came across. But yet everywhere you go, you still run into Cowboys fans.

But 25 years it is no surprise they lost fans. Kids as well, they will support winning teams. Unless living in the area of any team they are more apt to become a fan of that team.
I also believe as kids grow up and these 18 to 34 year old fans, are more into fantasy football, so they could care less of winning or losing as long as their fantasy teams gets points. So they really have less loyalty to any team, and just go with who is winning.

When you look at the top 10 highest rated games in any NFL season, the Cowboys are normally in 5-7 of those games.... no matter what the teams record for that season is.
When you look at any after market ticket vendor, Cowboys road games are SIGNIFICANTLY higher than any other teams road games. I just looked up ticket prices for my seats for the Saints game.... we paid $230 per ticket for our seats. The game 3 weeks earlier against the Falcons, same section and actually 2 rows lower than our seats is $149 per ticket..... that is unfortunately the curse us traveling Cowboys fans have.

In addition to those prices, Cowboy's "Road," games often have a significant portion of the stadium filled with Cowboys fans. The playoff game in LA 3 years ago had more Cowboy's fans in the stadium than Rams fans. Without a doubt, the team's popularity is not dropping. I grew up a Cowboys fan and I have 4 kids... ALL Cowboys fans. You think that same thing hasnt happened all over the country?

They are living off olds. Most young people view them as a joke.
I raised three sons, all of them watched the Cowboys every week as they grew up. My oldest son was 12 the last time the Cowboys won a divisional playoff game. He’s 37 now, and he and his other brothers consider the Cowboys a joke. They are all 3 huge Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars fans, because those two franchises have won two league championships and 5 conference championships since the Cowboys last did anything. They will watch a Cowboys game with me but they gave up on the Cowboys years ago.

More kids are growing up playing soccer than football these days. Soccer's popularity among them as grown as the NFL wanes. This will gradually continue into the future as they have kids and us old farts pass away.

The kids who grew up this century following football have had little reason to get excited about the Cowboys. They've either been an average team or choked in the playoffs, thanks to the jokers running the show.

How many times have you been at a social gathering to hear someone say they are a Cowboys fan. Then you start talking to them and within a few minutes you realize you are talking to a "Casual," fan that couldn't tell you who Drew Pearson is, let alone Russel Maryland. Are the Broncos a joke? or are they a serious team because they had a short run when they were able to luck out and land Peyton manning?

bahahahhah.... I was born in 1970, and by 1978 I was already hearing about soccer taking over all sports in this country.... well soccer still is a joke in this country after a kid gets past 14 years old.

NFL popularity is waning? what evidence supports that claim?

He just posted data that showed it has not happened all over the country, your sample of 4 notwithstanding.

Nothing he posted said the Cowboys don't have fans. It said the fan base has grown older, which makes sense given the lack of success the past 25 years. Kids don't give a hoot about what Dallas did in the 90s.

He just posted the evidence. Apparently you can read, so it seems you just ignore data that doesn't comport with your feelings.

My point is casual fans are everywhere, and your sons are an example if they dont care about the Cowboys because they havent won since 1995. This is the case for EVERY Team and in EVERY sport.

IM a huge Sixers fan and my wife was born in Jersey. While we were out their visiting, we got 3rd row seats on the baseline for like 25 bucks a ticket. This was about 6 years ago when they were smack in the middle of their tanking and were the worst team in the NBA. I just looked up the cost for those tickets for their next game against the Hawks, now those are $279 dollars per ticket. Thats the nature of the sports fan, not just Cowboys fans.

My point about the Broncos was clear, I thought....they were a great team with a great GM..... as long as Peyton was under center. As soon as Peyton was done, the Broncos became a "Joke."

More data for you to ignore. Just keep blathering on about your personal experiences, as if that's evidence of anything other than your own opinions.

Not only is soccer growing as a whole in the United States, but Major League Soccer ( MLS ), the top domestic league, has experienced a 27% rise in interest since 2012, according to Nielsen Sports Sponsorlink.

Here’s a good article from the Aspen Institute on kids sports and participation numbers. It shows the most popular sports among younger kids to be baseball, basketball and soccer. It also shows that participation numbers have dropped about 4% for football while showing numbers up for other kids sports. I think that has a lot to do with concussion research.

Here’s the article link:

ah...... so his one study with limited data is the gospel? Yes, I can read... I also understand how studies dont tell an entire story, have biases, have limited sample sizes. Do you know all of the information on the study? Probably not, but you accept its findings as the final word?

Well I certainly agree with you that casual fans come and go usually depending on if the team is winning. I don’t consider my sons to be “fair weather fans”. Their giving up on the Cowboys hasn’t been based on wins and losses. It’s been based on their lack of respect for who’s running it. My sons have stayed very loyal to the Mavericks through thick and thin. Why? Because they believe the people running it are doing things the right way.

Can you show us any data on football staying as popular? You seem confident, so I assume you have some evidence.

This probably is the driving force behind us finally realizing we need to work on the defense. We've put a half-hearted attempt over the last 5 seasons, but keep choosing the bargain over a definite rock solid player.

  • ESPN saw a 40% increase in regular-season college softball viewership last year and several similar spikes during the Women’s College World Series.

so that means what in regards to NFL football? NOTHING, just like your soccer numbers. The sport has increased in viewership.... well coming from nothing what does that mean> What are the actual viewership numbers? They are so low they cant even get on a regular network. And by the way, you can piss off with your crappy attitude.

Just curious.... do you think Robert Kraft is doing things the "Right way?" I assume yes...... so lets see how much his "Right ways," continue with his wonder boy gone. Amazing how having the right QB turns the owners into good ones, same with coaches and GMs.

Jerry is a master salesman. He uses the formula or turning players into personalities and then using those personalities to sell his team. I don't know Jerry well enough to know if he chooses branding over winning, but he is brilliant at the former.
