I don’t know that this discussion is even worth having. As you noted, it’s only an assumption Gregory will have a monster year, but the reality is it would only be an assumption that will even have a good enough year to say he is above average.

Too much time has passed, and too many games have been missed, even full seasons, plus he hasn’t proved to be special even when he has played.

Maybe that’s only because of the inconsistent availability - or maybe not - but I have to finally see something more than we have over these last 5-6 years before I start worrying about how to pay him. I don’t think it’s even a certainty we will want to keep him at all.

After not playing for a year, no offseason, and missing 6 games last year he had,

3 forced fumbles, 1 pass deflection, 3.5 sacks, 4 tackles for loss, 12 qb hits, 15 solo tackles

I think he is above average

Randy Gregorys contract is up after this year.

It is an assumption that he will have a monster year, but I think he will. The pretense of the thread is that Gregory is top 3 or so in sacks. The cowboys are paying a high priced DE, QB, WR, LB'er, and offensive tackles.

1. Can the cowboys have 2 high priced DE's
2. For people who know the cap, do they currently have the money to sign him
3. If the cowboys sign Gregory, what major players can't they sign
4. If they do sign him, I am assuming that will mean cheap contracts and league minimums at a lot of positions. Do you think the cowboys have filled their roster holes well, and have they done well with all the young guys on their team

As far as the money and cap issues on this thread, if you don't know the books and the cap, don't answer that part

I dont see the salary cap being an issue going forward. We have anchors like Jaylon and Zeke coming off in the next year or two. that right there is close to 30 million in cap space. If we want another 22 million we can always move on from Cooper.

I doubt he will, he will want what he is worth. It will suck to have to watch him in another uniform. Which is why I am asking the cap questions, because I don't know

Let’s do a hypothetical exercise.

Gregory has a good year, let’s say top 3 in sacks… last year that was 13.5 sacks. Let’s say he gets that.

That would put Gregory at 29 years old, in the NFL for 6 years, and having 24 career sacks under his belt…

The contract he’s worth, and what he’ll think he’s worth, might be two very different things.

He certainly has the potential to be above average, but until he plays in more than spurts he is not.

In the 6 seasons that have taken place since he was drafted he has 5 forced fumbles, 1 pass deflection, 10.5 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, 35 QB hits, and 49 solo tackles.

Nobody would pay big dollars for what he has done so far, so he still has a boatload to prove before that’s even a thought. For now, almost everything regarding Gregory is assumption.

We have seen many posts and even videos on the subject that, if the Cowboys wish to keep both then the Cowboys must extend Gregory......now!

Good question.
I hope Gregory balls out like crazy and forces the FO to make some hard decisions.
I think he's not as big of a risk now as he was, no matter if he's truly a changed man, or not.

Some of the best Cowboys players have not been anywhere close to saints.

I'm looking forward to this season and furthering this discussion as we watch how he does.
So the Gegory Watch begins?

Like as if we do not have enough drama to follow already. Gregory is not going to be under the radar by any means.

That doesn't look good for signing a high priced L DE

To be honest, and depending on how he plays in 2021, DLaw might not be with the Cowboys in 2022. Notice they haven't restructured him? I could be reading too much into that, but I still think he's playing 2021 to justify his contract.

Keep in mind that any projected cap for the Cowboys for 2022 doesn't include any restructures. Dak is a 33 million dollar cap hit in 2022. The way his contract is structured appears to suggest he'll be an 18 million dollar cap hit after converting base salary to bonus money. Hence the 6th year.

I think he has a shot at top 3 in the league
No way. Not to be negative but just being realistic. I doubt he'll be in the top 3 defensive players on this team by the end of the year. DLaw, Parsons and then maybe RG. I seriously doubt he'll be in the top 3 in sacks of the entire league. If he is franchise him and trade him for 2 first rounders.

I realistically seeing him having a 5-7 sack season and performing well enough to out price his way to another team. Like that DE we took on a one year deal then signed with the Bears in 2020. Can't remember his name without Googling it. I want to say Quinn but not sure if that name is in my head cuz if Dan Quinn.

Because he has never shown it in a game.

And people always make excuses why.

Potential means nothing if you don't consistently produce.

What is your analysis of gregory in the games he has played in?

He's a Jed favorite project.

Randy gets what he wants.

With that said....I think it'll be fair BUT, I don't know who his agent is.
