I mean if anything this shows to me how fickle fans can be....no coincidence pats are so popular- they win a lot. In 96 we won a lot

The Bad Boys turned you off that much? They were nasty and set the league back in lots of ways.

Wha? Jordan vs the Bad Boys and Isiah Thomas vs Magic was must see TV. Those were probably the most compelling rivalries in NBA history , and moved the NBA forward in popularity. That was back when the final score mattered to the players and losses were taken personally. Today's divas only care about their own brand. The NBA is unwatchable garbage compared to the bad boys era.

In 1979, NFL Films famously created the moniker “America’s Team” for the Dallas Cowboys because of their tremendous popularity across the entire American landscape. Over 40 years later, the Cowboys are still enormously popular. Every Cowboys road stadium still contains a significant number of Cowboys fans. For decades, the Cowboys have usually continued to be a big draw for national TV ratings.

Despite 25 years of mediocrity and only 4 playoff wins- none beyond the wild card round- the Cowboys have remained popular. It’s a testament to the power of its brand that had been built since the success of the team in the 70s and 90s.

However, looking at some recent data from a couple of studies done at Murray State University and Emory State University about the popularity of sports teams, shows the Cowboys national popularity dipping. Among the all all important demographic of 18-34 year old fans, the Cowboys have dropped from their once dominant position.

Here’s some interesting data collected on the popularity of the Cowboys comparing its popularity in 1996 to 2020. Some interesting tidbits:
  • In 1996, the Cowboys were the most popular pro football team for fans in the 18-34 demographic. That year, a whopping 25% of fans listed the Cowboys as their favorite football team. The 49ers were a distant 2nd at 11.4%.
  • By 2020, the Cowboys were still in the top 5 most popular football teams, but their popularity among 18-34 year olds had dropped to 7.5%. (The pats were #1)
  • The NFL as a whole has become less popular among younger fans, although the reasons are not as clear.
Again, the Cowboys are still a very popular team in America. It shows the power of the iconic brand built over 60 seasons. If this team can ever get another deep playoff run going again, imagine how popular they would be. Winning cures all ills.

Here’s a link to the article that has a lot of this info. Most of the stats are toward the end.

Some of us look at these types of things with a lot of skepticism. The reason is how they come up with their numbers. They use polls and surveys and many if not most of us know that any poll or survey can be worded to get the results they want. As you said there was a time when there were a lot more Cowboys fans on their road games and as you also said there has been a reduction and a loss of interest in the NFL that actually started before the current problems. The reduction or loss of fans is due to 3 reasons. The league has become a social platform instead of just remaining a sport. This has angered many to most fans. Next they have driven the cost up to where the average fan can't just take their families to a game without placing that into their budgets long before actually going. There are fans now who say the only way they will ever be able to go to a game is if the win the tickets which also covers the parking. The last reason is one that the league has no blame and that is what this country has had to endure for the last 16 months.

Your implication that because the Cowboys have not won a Super Bowl in over 25 years so somehow they should no longer be referred to as America's team anymore let me point out after the packers won some championships and Super Bowls in the 60's Green Bay got named Title Town and it's still known as Title Town even though at on time they went THIRTY YEARS in between Super Bowl wins.

The young will gravitate toward the next big thing. We would have done the same, we just didn't get as much as they're getting.

I had the choice of the major sports and that was it. Look at their choices today.

If I was in that 18-34 demo, I doubt that I would be into it as I am.

I have a 9 year old grandson whose only knowledge of the NFL comes from his video game experience.

The Cowboys' continuing popularity has a lot to do with fans who remember watching this game. The clock is ticking.

Yeah, I mean if they're not willing to sit through at least half a century of losing who needs them?

i don’t understand your point but you tried. A+ for effort. It actually shows that most fans are front runners and is less to do about the cowboys and more about fans and fandom as a whole.

The Cowboys gained their popularity with front runners back when they won.

Now they're losing their popularity with front runners because they don't win anymore.

Cry about it.

First he tries to question our talent but after this draft class even he can't do that. We're practically the Globetrotters now. We should start doing tricks during games.

So then he says no, no, no...it's talent development that's important. Remember that thread? Insinuating that while he now has to admit our roster is great it's our coaches that are not.

But now after glowing reports from the OTAs of players developing he loses his cool and says well, nobody likes us anymore.

All this from a guy who signed up here with a username suggesting the great Bob Hayes was nothing but a pot smoker.

The drop is fair weather fans being a part of that. There are many fans that will follow winning teams. That is also probably true of fans that followed the Cowboys as well. But I think most Cowboys fans stick with the Cowboys. Just as most Steelers and Packers fans.
Those Patriots fans now will now become KC fans, and how many bailed and became TB fans, at least as long as Tom Brady is there. Outside of NE area, how many Patriots fans has anyone really every came across. But yet everywhere you go, you still run into Cowboys fans.

But 25 years it is no surprise they lost fans. Kids as well, they will support winning teams. Unless living in the area of any team they are more apt to become a fan of that team.
I also believe as kids grow up and these 18 to 34 year old fans, are more into fantasy football, so they could care less of winning or losing as long as their fantasy teams gets points. So they really have less loyalty to any team, and just go with who is winning.
I agree. But when the Cowboys start winning. The entire country all of a sudden shows up. Just like happened in the 90s
