1100 and 5 and people talk like we got the greatest WR ever. lol He's good, but should've never got paid what he did. Those numbers are flat out ridiculous and just doesn't coincide with the production. Another brain fart from the front office. Who will be next to bend Jerry over?
Yea, it’s the same reason Elliott bent him over. Jethro thought they were vital to Daks success. I’m not so sure that’s the case with Gallup. This season could tell us more.

I personally don't see Gallup getting golladay money. Maybe I'm underrating him.
I underrate FA players every off season but it's the combination of what else is available and cap space that decides that many times.

You forgot the durability factor. Cooper is injured now and all he did was show up to OTAs. Cooper is seemingly always nicked up. I say this as a Cooper fan but I think it has to be a factor. Boils down to what are they getting back for whoever they give up but if the record isn't good at the trade deadline. probably Amare gooes.
A very valid point and he's been that way since he came into the league, In fantasy, it was feast or famine between him and Crabtree.

Code:
Targets Receptions Yards TD's Target Conversion
Cooper 130 92 1,114 5 71%
Lamb 111 74 935 5 67%
Gallup 105 59 843 5 56%

If you use code, /code in brackets, fonts stop being proportionately spaced, so you can count characters out to get the columns aligned.
Still pretty tedious, because it won't be matching up with what you see in the editor in your browser, but at least it's well defined and controllable.

Note that I only *tried* to align the first column of numbers.
Code? You're talking code to me after being on these forums for all these years?

There will be and already is discussions and whys as to keep or trade Coop. My take is different. I want to keep my QB happy with what he needs and with who he has developed with what he is comfortable on the field with throwing to someone he has complete trust.

Remember Aikman, he was our QB before many of you where born. Remember Jay Novacek, he was our TE when Aikman was here. Was he a great TE? Nope. Was he a great blocker? Nope. But when Aikman had to make a throw, he knew Novacek would catch the ball even if he was blanketed by the secondary. Sure he had Irvin and Harper and Emmitt but Novacek was his go to guy when he got in trouble.

Cooper is that guy right now for Prescott. Say what you want about Cooper but he still has the best moves for getting open than any of our current WR and in fact most likely anyone in the league. Is his salary high? Yep. The question is after this year, is the salary worth it.

If, as many predict, Dak throws for over 5000 yards this year and Cooper has say 1500 yards and Lamb and Gallup are both close to those numbers then why in the world would anyone want to get rid of any of those WRs especially with all of them under the age of 28. I know, I know we can't afford all of them. BS and more BS.

The salary cap next is going up abet not more than say 10 to 14 million, but in 2023 when the new TV contract kicks in as well as the betting money and other money from NFL ventures such as contracts with Bud and others then the projected rise in the cap is supposed to take a significant jump, very significant. Dallas can and will extend guys they want to keep with contracts that push more money to the end of contracts, redo contracts of existing guys, etc., etc. just as they are doing now. Fans get way to over hyped about the salary cap yet ever team figures a way around it every year.

Sure teams let aging veterans go, trade veterans, and release guys. It is part of the business, not a fun part but a part. Julio Jones is a classic example. He has been injury prone the last couple of years, is 32 years old, and no way Atlanta was going to redo his contract to add years to it when the value is declining. Not the same as Cooper is for us. Now what will Dallas do in 2022?

Depending on how the Offense goes this year then we could see Dallas release Cooper or trade him. Same goes with Gallup and any other player that we currently have. Will we resign any of the potential free agents in 2022? Sure. Who will have to be debated after the season because there is no way to know now.

Now as to who we keep in 2021, to me that is fair easy. Cooper, Lamb, and Gallup are sure things. Wilson is as close to a sure thing do to his special teams play and what he can bring to the offense in terms of specialty plays and as a fourth WR. Brown is a huge target and a great blocker so I think he has a great chance to remain at least this year. Fehoko brings some interesting talent to the WR corp and if we keep six then he makes it or could take Brown's spot as the 5th WR. Eagles, Vasher, Smith and Parker are very interesting undrafted guys that could stick at the PS and maybe the 53 but a lot has to happen imo for any of them.

So here we go into 2021.

Oh, so we need a few more "no risk bargains" we can all brag about and no Super Bowls?
"No risk bargains" don't mean anything. I'll take a Super Bowl any day while somebody else tears up the league with stats and big names (and overpriced players)..

Don't get me wrong, he's a good receiver, no doubt a good guy, but he wasn't a difference maker with the Raiders and he's not here.
What kind of claim to fame that he is "he's a true #1?" What does that even mean?
And no matter how you choose to look at his earnings, its not justified by being the best receiver (if you think he is) on the Cowboys.

NFL's highest paid wide receivers (average salary per year):

  • 1. Cardinals WR DeAndre Hopkins: $27.3 million
  • 2. Falcons WR Julio Jones: $22 million
  • 3. Chargers WR Keenan Allen: $20 million
  • 4. Cowboys WR Amari Cooper: $20 million
  • 5. Saints WR Michael Thomas: $19.3 million
  • 6. Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill: $18 million
  • 6. Browns WR Odell Beckham Jr.: $18 million
  • 8. Bears WR Allen Robinson: $17.9 million
  • 9. Buccaneers WR Mike Evans: $16.5 million
  • 10. Rams WR Robert Woods: $16.25 million

    Your choice.
Those top 4 really helped their teams get into the playoffs last season. I think that is the most overpaid position in the game.

Cooper could leave town tomorrow and we wouldn't miss him.
Ask yourself this: Is he $5 Millions dollars better than than any of the other top ten receivers making $15 Million?

Player Team Cap Number Cash Spent
Amari Cooper Cowboys $22,000,000 $20,000,000
Allen Robinson Bears $17,980,000 $17,980,000
Davante Adams Packers $16,787,500 $13,250,000
Mike Evans Buccaneers $16,637,500 $12,250,000
Chris Godwin Buccaneers $15,983,000 $15,983,000
Tyreek Hill Chiefs $15,850,500 $13,200,500
Odell Beckham Jr. Browns $15,750,000 $15,750,000
Keenan Allen Chargers $15,700,000 $13,000,000
Mike Williams Chargers $15,680,000 $15,680,000
Julio Jones Titans $15,300,000 $15,300,000

IMHO, the answer is, "not in your lifetime."
The Bucaaneers had no problem keeping two, the Chargers no problem keeping two.
Is he better so much better than Beckham, Williams, Jones you have to pay $5-$6 Million more?

I'd rather have a Super Bowl with Williams, Godwin, or Hill than continue to throw money at an overvalued 4.42 player who runs precise routes and is not a locker room distraction.
But that's just me.

Yes he is especially on this team. Coopers route running is what makes him special, that technical ability is also the one to diminish the least as he ages. Cooper is why Gallup looks good. Gallup is similar to smith-schuster in that while he is a good quality player he is not a #1, he can not create on his own like cooper can. Gallup is a great example of matching a really talented player with his perfect role and Lamb is more of the same. It's so much easier for defenses to game plan for Gallup than Cooper because of Coopers route running, that is how he beats you. You can not game plan for those moves. Dak will suffer without someone with Coopers elite route running ability.

It's a dilemma for sure. But I suspect Gallup with be the odd man out. I think this first because the other two are already under contract, so no negotiation to worry about. The second is Gallup has the lowest catch % of the three. Then there is the fact that the rookie (Lamb) got more targets last year than Gallup, which could suggest the team sees Lamb as the better player. Of course, Cooper got more targets than both.

Lamb for sure will not be gone. The team likes him, and he is on a rookie pay scale.

Cooper's salary could work against him, but Gallup's asking price may not be too terribly far behind, and I'm confident the team would rather have Cooper.

The one thing Gallup does better than the other two is go up for a high pass and fight for the ball, but there are a lot of bigger receivers in training camp that might offset the loss some.

your best deal will come IF a contending team decides mid season they need a WR and are willing to a pay a little more

That's very true and I had not even considered that possibility. That's exactly why we gave up a first when we got Amari. Good point.

I think is is a given that they cannot keep Cooper, Lamb and Gallup next season so it comes down to the odd WR out and pairing the best two remaining.

Then there is the question of trade value of each and Cooper's salary and too often disappearing act since he got in the league so he's 3rd as far as trade value but tops in cap relief.

Gallup either has to be one of the two or traded prior to November or they get nothing but a compensatory pick for him leaving. You can bet his agent has something in the Golladay neighborhood for him, around 16-18M a year.

Lamb would be far the last choice to trade for most here, even though he led the team that led the league in drops, but he would be the best trade bait and get at least a 1st for him. Drops seem to bother us more than the teams because Cooper led the league the year before we traded for him.

So, what's your perfect pair, who's the odd WR out?

Before you answer that, look these 2020 stats over.

Targets Receptions Yards TD's Target Conversion
Cooper 130 92 1,114 5 71%

Lamb 111 74 935 5 67%

Gallup 105 59 843 5 56%

All three played in all 16 games and with a bunch of different QB's.

One thing to consider and I know he's making a lot of money but Cooper puts up decent stats the quietest of any WR I can recall. When he disappears, have you watched a replay of the game to see what was going on? He is still one of the toughest covers around and his immediate impact on the QB and offense upon his arrival cannot be discounted. He makes the QB better.

The story the stats don't tell is the Cooper Effect on the defenses and what his presence allows the OC, QB and offense to do. I wonder who the odd WR out would be if the QB had a vote in it and I think we can rest assured he does have something to say about it.

I think those so willing to make Cooper the odd WR out need to think carefully about that. Forget the money and just focus on the effectiveness of the offense. And that disappearing act? He has the best catch conversion of the three when he appears.

So, let's see your ideas on how to end up with the best 2 WR's.

I am of the belief that two of the three receivers are gone after this year - both Cooper and Gallup. And that belief is due to the fact that the Cowboys are projected to be $20 million over next year’s cap (yes, even with the rise to $208 million).

I think that is precisely why the team drafted Fehoko and have signed an unusually high number of free agents. They are trying to plan for this future.

I think Cowboys have the means with some of the contracts they have to restructure to free up money such as Cooper contract itself.

I don’t see it. Taking a good look at their contracts and which ones they’ve already reworked, there’s not a whole lot to restructure. And there comes a point where you simply look to get out of deals as well, and not just kick the can down the road and get locked in further. They did that with Crawford and grossly overpaid a mediocre player for years.

There are really only two deals where they can gain significant and needed cap relief - Cooper and Jaylon Smith. Cutting those can get them to a manageable cap position but I don’t see further restructuring getting it done.

There are a few contracts in particular that they shouldn’t touch and instead should get out of as soon as they can - Elliott and Lawrence at the top of that list.

Unless there’s another $20 million rise in the cap for 2023, this team has to shed costs.

and I don't see Dallas letting 2 starting WR go. This past season they cleared 18 mill on Zack martin, Tyron Smith and Collins. Dak contract will be used just Romo and Aikman in restructure to free up money. Dallas is far from the only team who will do this, all teams do and we are no different. I would think the odds of both Cooper and Gallup remaining is slim but no way they lose both

We can't forget the money. The Cowboys are projected to be $24 million over the 2022 CAP. That is without re-signing Gallup, LVE, Gregory or Connor Williams. As it looks now, the Cowboys will need to cut some big salaries.

Cooper's contract is mostly salary so the biggest save comes from trading him. If Lamb has a big year in 2021, I think the Cowboys will trade Cooper and find another receiver in the draft.

Maybe just me, but i don't think some other NFL teams are gonna be revved up to trade for a 20 million dollars whose has durability issues and questionable alpha male mentality vs elite CBs
and i dunno if they considered Coop in the same mannerism as Hopkins, Tyrek, Julio, Diggs or Metcalf group area ..

All fine and good with AC getting the seasonal big catch numbers as I expect him to with the Dak passing game, ditto with the other two WRs per Lamb, Gallup.
But the “ disappearing act” reputation hasn’t gone away yet, imo

What I would want to see is Cooper our highest paid and most invested WR, consistently beating the more elite coverage CBs ala Darius Slay, Ramsey, Gilmore, Griffin, Lattimore, etc.
We pay him among the best, to beat the best.

Some think Lamb will eventually be our lead featured WR,.. think he will be our version of DeAndre Hopkins in the making.
Thus with a WR with that kind of magnitude, could make Cooper a complementary 2nd WR.

There’s been bookend WRs before such as Colts with Harrison/Wayne,.. Rams with Holt/Bruce,.. If your lead wide is hampered limited with injuries, is out of games, or being double teamed scheme limited, or having difficulty facing shutdown CBs, then that’s when you'd like to depend upon your second WR on the opposite side to step up and take over.

But Not every team has that kind of luxury.
