The simple truth about respect

You are right when you suggest the Cowboys aren't winning and thus have earned no respect. However something has to account for what seems to be respect when the schedule makers/networks continue to give the Cowboys the maximum allowable primetime games year after year.
That’s certainly a type of respect, you’re right.

Sometimes I think Fantasy football has tainted the views of fans and what really matters. Stats are important- kind of. They are important if you’re winning. But if you lead the league in yardage passing but are losing, who cares?

The only time it matters is when some clown tells you the QB is the reason you are losing. Then the 400 yard 3 TD passing games proves them wrong. In THAT way it matters.

Simple minded fans may base giving respect on wins or big plays in big games but that’s not fair at all. There’s a lot of players on this team who I have much respect for. Not going to mention any names because the haters will try and pick apart each one. But it’s extremely naive to base giving respect to players based on just your criteria.

On an individual basis, I can't help but agree with you. There's a lot of the players that I respect personally.
Maybe I misunderstood the OP's intent. I took it to mean the respect of the media and the pundits. The national discourse about the players and team. Until we actually win in the postseason, we just aren't going to get much of that. It won't matter if we have three 1,000 yard recievers or the league leader in rushing yards. If we don't win postseason games, we won't be getting much respect.

Does that mean if all our fans deeply respected this team in the right way, the rest of league would too? Help me understand what you mean here buddy.
No, just as simple as it's stated. Many of our own fans don't respect this team, so why should anyone else.....

Bad coaching and poor defense has been the hallmark of this team for 25 years in general. Offense has been the strength. QB has been the strength over the last 15.

This team isnt winning diddly until the coaching and defense get up to par with the offense. We already wasted Romo's entire career and half of Dak's. Chances are we will continue to waste the rest of it.
Yep

And why this franchise doesn’t have much respect this era. But I wouldn’t translate to our key talent.

Yes, I was referring to many of our fans being surprised at a lack of respect from writers and pundits. And that if we can win more playoff games, we will earn more respect.

When many of our own fans don't have respect for this team and it's players, no one else will either.

Fans of other teams hated the 90s Cowboys, but they had no choice but to respect 3 SB titles in 4 years. They don't respect the Cowboys these days because all they see is hype and talk with little to show for it. What is there to respect? Jerry's wealth? Stephen's nepotism?

The Cowboys get as many, or more, national TV games as anyone yet their season is over by mid-January and the same two fools continue to run the show. As a fan of the team I find that hard to respect. If I were a fan of another team I'd see the Cowboys as a laughing stock.

I’m not sure how much respect we should have? Afterall what other division would we be picked to win?

As always we have fans who see our team better than they are without more evidence and better results.

That said, I’d argue there is still respect for individual talents despite the teams history.

Our franchise is the laughing stock but I wouldn’t lump all of our talent into that.

Agree with that and it’s a given that the team doesn’t get respect until they earn it.

The 70s and 90s teams were both loved and hated. The “hate” was based on our dominance. The Cowboys won 14 playoff games in the 70s, including 7 divisional round wins, 5 NFC championships and 2 SBs. The 90s teams won 12 playoff games including 4 divisional wins, 3 NFC championships and 3 SBs. That generates a ton of respect. And hate, lol. Oh to be hated again for winning!

This time of year, there are a multitude of preseason rankings of NFL teams and also players by position. I rarely put any stock in those rankings.

But every year at this time, we begin see all the NFL “experts” telling us the teams that will make the playoffs and win the next SB. And the over-hyped player rankings by position. The truth is, most of this stuff is based on prior, most recent performances.

And every year, many Cowboys fans are surprised and offended that our team and most of our best players aren’t getting any “respect”. There should be no surprise on that because we haven’t done much as a team for so long to gain much respect.

Here’s the simple truth about “respect:
  • It’s always earned by winning.
  • Teams must win big games to get it.
  • Individual players get it by making big plays in big games- NOT JUST STATS.
So when the next preseason rankings come out and our Cowboys get little or no respect, don’t be surprised. Just hope like I do that this team can finally earn some real respect by winning something that matters!

I never, ever give a rip what some journalist writes in some article. I ignore most of that stuff. The only thing I care about is the results on the field.

Why would this team receive more respect than they’ve earned ?

Predictions are based on recent history and current trends. Unless you want to use a crystal ball.

Respect for the coach on the sideline. Jimmy Johnson demanded it. He got the benefit of the doubt. I don’t think Jason Garrett ever got that respect. But as far as the team yes you earn it by winning. And playing hard. You don’t have to always win to earn respect

Jazz, IMO this thread is about encouragement. I encourage everyone to hope we earn respect by winning big games again. What’s “whiny” about that?

Secondly, I’m always amused by the idea that someone swoops in early in a post they don’t like and says it’s about “whining”. This is an opinion forum. Whining, cheering, laughing…whatever. It’s all part of a forum of opinions. Including your opinion that this will be “a thread win for the whiners”. That’s why this place exists.

I wasn't saying you was whining. I was saying this thread will create that from the usuals. As you know every thread does.
Just about everyone looks for negatives even in positive info. I guess winning may change that as I get your point. But even then, there will be a few out there.

As I am always equally amused if a positive thread is created, how early someone swoops in and turns around.

I think Jimmy Johnson, got more than he deserved. The benefit of the doubt. He demanded it that’s why he got it. He knew what he was talking about. And I think the refs were afraid of him. For that reason alone. Play penalties it was a long way in winning games. And we’ve been screwed sent him

This feels like a ....we (positive) fans are being yelled at for standing up for our team...thread
This will be another thread win for the whiners. :lmao2:

All I see in this post is a whine, feeling "yelled at" when no one was even speaking to you. :muttley:
