For all the criticism Cowboys special teams coach Bones Fassel has received during his 2 year stint thus far, .. i've never experienced or at least recalled an season - (even in the Jimmie Johnson era ) where our special teams has blocked two punts within one season.

Luke Gifford blocked a punt vs Pats ... and just very recently it was Malik Turner who blocked a punt (albeit controversial punt block recovery) ..so is Bones bringing something to the special teams unit that we haven't had in quite some time ?

Is Bones bringing something unique to our special teams after all ?

i'd always wonder what kind of SP coach Bones could become if he cut out all the antics, and exotic free for all calls and plays that is ill advised or come at the worst timing and placement .. what if Bones just lines up and coaches flat out sound fundamental, discipline special teams ...
its much improved regardless of what fans think., rather have aggression then safe..his moves have worked out ragrdless of what you think of the LEG

Greg, anger, and the LS are all doing well..his calls can be aggressive and risky but we have seen so much safe play and conservative bs , ill take the good with the bad..that goes for MM calls as well..

Pros: 1 blocked punt, 1 near blocked punt. Good punter.

Cons: Up and down Kicker. Average coverage units. Penalties fly on almost every return, guys returning kicks they should down, huge penalties from over-aggression that extend drives

In short— he is a high-risk, high-reward coach. The occasional big play will shine, but man, the mistakes are killer when they happen

Pretty much describes our kicker. Misses some head scratchers, but can't deny the dude has a big leg.

I agree like seeing aggression coming from Special teams and I thought going for the block coming out the halftime was a great call and the block was made. However much like the overall day in general even good things turned bad for the Cowboys but yeah that play was intended to shift momentum and setup offense with great field position or even score off the play.

Can excuse Nashon for not knowing the block punt rule, or simply forgetting the rule, in the heat of the moment......but no excuse for the ST Coach to be jumping up & down, and not knowing the rule.
its a reflex ball came sailing AT HIM, HIS HAND CAME UP.. get over it

he will learn from it..they beat us down in every aspect of that game and those keep acting as this was the lay that lost the game needs a chill pill.. most like we lose anyway and by the same score given those garbage points

go get t that 3 from FG we didnt attempt get that score there 3/7 and they got 30 and its still not much closer ..we were embarrassed at every level this game Wright had zero to do with the loss.

I’d rather have a boring special teams that doesn’t commit penalties, kicks the ball out of the end zone, and makes their FGs.

- Dunno how much Bones can help when it come to player personnel ... but even with Lamb returning punts, we remain average in that area.
And i'm somewhat concerned about Ceddy Wilson, whose muffed more than one punt return. And he was thought to be sure handed one.

- i've always thought Pollard once hes' more under control, and more poised - would be one of the more explosive KO returner. -such as the games' opening big return.

He is doing a good job. Takes a few years to build a squad of guys. And that blocked punt should have been recovered but looked like the guy it hit was trying to grab it on the run. Need to recover it. Get on it. Left our Defense out there.

I never had any issue with his aggressiveness because I was sick of being conservative. I can live with the mistakes of the unit keeps making plays. They just look like a well coached unit then they did last year with Bones.

apparently it took 4 Refs and a 3mins huddle to figure it out..and? if they had hard time knowing it why would the coach?

some rules are so deep and have tiers and exceptions it hard to understand and some still dont LOL

They are playing with a lot more energy. Special Teams is meaningful once again and the unit has some ballers on it.

Fassel is a very good special teams coach. Fans get too caught up in when things go wrong to see that. Personally, I was hoping based on how we were playing Sunday that he would break out a fake. Up until then, he's been able to trust in the offense and defense and mostly just stick with the basics.

But i had to wonder if Bones was such a terrific special teams coach, ..then why did the Rams allow him to walk ?
They seemingly made no effort to re-sign him once his contract expired.

Was Bones too aggressive and excessive for Sean McVey's liking ?
Did Sean and the Rams decided to opt for SP coach that was more on str8 up to their liking, than the all-out daredevil Bones would like to be ?

And it's ironic, that we don't see that hell-fire Bones, (since the ill timed block punt vs Chargers) ..but seemingly the more sound disciplined side ?

In the 92-93 season, the Cowboys blocked at least two (maybe more) punts. The opening game against the WFT, the Cowboys blocked a punt for a safety. The next game against the Giants, they blocked a point for a touchdown (Robert Williams).

What stood out to me about that season is that we were far more aggressive on special teams, particularly blocking punts. Unfortunately, I can't find the entire stats for blocked kicks/punts for that season. I remember the game against the WFT because Isaac Holt is the one who blocked it for the Cowboys that game, and team stats record touchdowns, which includes the one by Robert Williams on a blocked punt against the Giants.

I believe there were others, but I know there were two that season ... in the Jimmy Johnson era.

To answer the question, I think the ST has improved. The two punt block says it all for me. Greg the leg has been good, in my estimation. Yes, he missed a kick against the Bucs, and yes, it was critical considering how close the game was. But I don't think we would have beaten the Bucs anyway. Field goal or touchdown, Brady was driving down the field for the go-ahead score regardless.

And he did deliver the game-winner at San Diego. His miss against Minnesota was inconsequential in the long run.

So, I like the direction that Bones is taking the unit.

I'm over it more than you'd think......I'll look the other way too. Learning.
