My guess is Payton will not be coaching in 2022 by his own choice.

He's been at it for years, just got remarried in 2021, and will probably take a break from it.

:facepalm::facepalm:

Payton still under contract with Saints for 3 more years. No matter if Payton has decided to sit out 2022, when he decides to come back AND IF he decides he wants to go coach for the Cowboys, Saints will want players AND draft picks as compensation. Cowboys can't afford that.

I think he can retire and come back after a year off. Not sure. Coaches contracts aren’t like players. I don’t think. But hey I have been wrong before.

Maybe but that would be because verbage in the contract states it....if its a straight forward contract they own his rights through 2024.

So we had a chance at him and it was a done deal in 2019 until a stupid basketball player screwed this thing up?!?

There should be a buy out for coaches. If a coach wants to leave then another team should have the option to buy the contract out by paying a team what they are paying him. The coach don’t want to be there and they get paid out..

So if this 2019 story is true and Jerry was ready to move on from his son Garrett after at least winning the wild card game, then why wouldn’t Jerry do it now? I think it all comes down to Sean Payton. If he wants to come to Dallas it’s going to happen.

the NFL has to pass all contracts , Payton had an out in his 2016 deal that involved the owner or GM can't remember but the NFL had the language removed. The NFL does this along with other rules that prohibit a player or coach from just quitting one team and joining another.

Whatever it takes Jerry needs to do. He has the talent and can create cap space to resign FAs. Swallow some pride and get it done Jerry. This is the coach you've wanted. And this is the job he wants. He will be worth more than a late first round pick. And say a future 2nd or 3rd
