This is the annual Cowboys front office off season “process”- tell the fans “we can’t afford good FAs because of the cap and the future”, then dumpster dive for “affordable” FAs, sell every draft pick as a future pro bowler, then act surprised when they either don’t make the playoffs or lose early.

Wash, rinse, repeat. And sell the fans starting in training camp that this is a SB roster.

Meanwhile, teams with a great front office like the rams, bucs, chiefs, packers, ravens, etc. somehow (under the same cap rules Stephen Jones whines about) are able to sign quality free agents and get under the cap. It’s not like this is some kind of state secret to get under the cap.

Of all the dumb statements by the Jonesboys, this ranks right up there w/ "You don't need a good OL if your QB is mobile."

Those teams you listed all have good to great coaching. I am not saying we have as much talent as those teams...but we just saw what the 49ers did with "pretty good" talent....but EXCELLENT coaching. When you don't have elite talent....and you have average coaching at best....we will be what Dallas always is....average. The Jones boys are the biggest problem in Dallas in so many ways. But it is obvious that we are just playing out the string with McCarthy because they do not want to eat 3 years on his contract. He is out of his league with the top coaches in the NFL today. The Jones Boys are on RECORD saying there are 500 coaches that could coach the Dallas Cowboys....they meant it then...and they still feel that way today. If they TRULY wanted to win...they would hire a search firm to get a real head coach...and they would get out of the way and let a real head coach do what a real head coach is supposed to do. We hired Mike McCarthy off the couch. I don't think we truly grasp what that signifies. He then turns around and hires Mike Nolan off the couch! We are so hypnotized by the Silver and Blue....so mesmerized by the Star...many of us do not grasp how much tomfoolery those 2 moves alone represent! I don't encourage anyone to sit and think too long about the hiring of Mike McCarthy and Mike Nolan....because it is evidence that after running a NFL franchise for 25 years without Jimmy...the Jones Boys have learned next to NOTHING!!!

GREAT post. Totally agree with you.
Posters will respond with the Jones meddling and undermining ways as the answer to this as an attempt at saying every future head coach is a Jerry Puppet.
Well, I agree and disagree.

At THE VERY LEAST the coach accepting the HC position should have his own conditional requirements.

Like if he's an offensive minded coach, then it will be HIS offense. Not a pre determined coordinator that is inherited.

So, it's kind of a tier or level of Yes Man type who would agree to coach this team.

The current HC totally sold out all his credibility in order to support his retirement portfolio. He has zero authority/accountability to this team and is an embarrassment to the title of HC for the Cowboys.

I would like to think that there's some level of less Yes Man head coach out there that would be an improvement over the current version.

If the job truly is "just another paycheck" to any coaches who interview then nothing will ever change. IF, and it's a big IF, the coach was miraculously granted a reasonable level of autonomy and he wasn't just interested in collecting a check, then I think. "some" actual cultural change "may" take place.

Enough to lead to a championship?
Probably not because he'd probably leave or be fired after 4 yrs like Johnson and Parcells.

But again, AT LEAST try a new non sold out guy to replace the current model.
He is embarrassing.

This is as close to hearing Dumb and Dumber admit this will be a throwaway season. I don't expect them to even try to sell the team as contenders this season. Maybe if they hadn't
"pushed it all in" on Dak and other underwhelming players, we wouldn't have to hear Dumber tell us the cap is real.

Stephen does not like your comment. Am I the only one who recalls the "ladies frames" Seinfeld episode?

Still can't wrap my head around Jerry and Stephen, seeing how close we are to being THAT TEAM and continue to say" we can't mortgage the future." WE GOTTA HAVE A NOW AT SOMEPOINT WHEN YOU KEEP TALKING FUTURE! Their thinking is just comical. I will give you guys odds the Chiefs, Bills, Titans, and 49ers will make moves where needed and be a better football team.

They are incompetent they know it, and they are unwilling to get better people in to do anything about it. They're playing to the KJJs of this forum and fandom, telling them the check is definitely in the mail this month for the twenty-seventh month since they first promised it was, because they know those fans will happily wait by the mailbox one more month and then another and another.....

The “check is in the mail” is what Cowboys fans have listened to for 26 years.

i remember like 6 years ago people said they were all in for one year and it seems like they keep getting that message but still manage to put a team together.

 For the life of me, I couldn't tell you why I still follow this dumpster fire of a franchise. I guess a lifetime of fandom can do that.

I'm only 36, and I have zero hope of even a few more playoff wins in my lifetime.

No
They don't know it.

They've both been involved in football for their whole lives since they were kids, thru major college as players, and thru decades in the pros doing this very job…..more than the vast majority of GMs

So right or wrong, no, you will not convince they dont know what they aredoing doing

An all in plan would blow up in the Cowboys face and lead to being cellar dwellers. You go all in when you’re real close and we’re not real close. We couldn’t even get past the wild card round at home. Had it not been for a weak division we probably would have struggled to make the playoffs.

Whether the Jones Boys recognize it or not…Surely we as fans can all agree they are not good at building a SB winning team. The evidence is copious.

It really speaks volumes of how committed they are to putting a true contender on the field. You have a good team right now. Go for it over the next few years. It doesn't take teams 10 years to rebuild anymore. The 49ers are a good example of that.
The Bengals are also a good example. You can turn it around in one year with the right pieces.

News alert: Stephen Jones has made it clear the Cowboys will not try to win a Super Bowl. Following another team's blueprint of winning a championship goes against the core beliefs of the Cowboys. It goes against our "solid culture" that has been established.

you can tell they don't care because they paid a backup QB a lot of money.

Stephen Jones is an idiot like his dad. I think he cares more on saving money than winning. He will be worst than his dad.

"Decades" because they work for themselves. The Jones boys dynamic duo would've been canned 15-20 years ago, otherwise.

No other NFL team would hire either of them after 3 lousy playoff wins in 25 years. The "vast majority of GMs" have to actually win to keep their jobs.

The cap wouldn't even be an issue if they followed my plan. Give the players cap friendly contracts and pay them millions more to do unrelated side jobs.Dak could play for 20 million a year and sweep Jerry's driveway for 20 million a year.
I doubt that would be legal . Then every team could get under the cap easily and keep all the players they want.
