They are going to roll over like $20 million in cap space, aren't they?
At this point, it looks like it.

From what Stephen and Jerry said, they want to sign a few more players. But we know that'll be another Brent Urban and Damontae Kazee

It's pretty clear to me that anyone that's added from here is going to be of the 1 year/2 million variety.

So....whoever will play for that.

Doubt they will be named Tretter or Wagner.

Wagner has over priced himself. Won't be until after the draft some team may come knocking. Or more like Wagner comes knocking with a reduced price.

Tretter would be nice. Not sure what his price is.

Maybe, yeah....but I still feel like Wagner would earn it on the right team though. It's still a paycut for him and I'm sure he doesn't see himself that way.

Wondering if these types wouldn't do better after June 1 when teams have some room open up......and that may be what teams are telling agents for these types.....we can up our offer after June 1. Just a guess.

Off topic a little but I wonder why the June 1 thing is the way it is....

Obviously part of the CBA, but wouldn't it benefit both owners and players if the two June 1 designations afforded teams use of that cap space right away?

Players wouldn't complain because it's spent on them.

According to this, they have about $14 remaining before the $10 million in June for Collins.

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/cap/

And they likely can save a few million more if/when they sign Schultz long term. Now whether they can finalize a deal remains to be seen but if that happens, you could be looking at $27-28 million in space minus the $3-4 million for the draft and then $3-4 million in other bums they bring in via the barrel below the bottom of the barrel they got done shopping in.

I'll be honest, there is still a part of me that is a sucker and hopes/thinks they will surprise and bring in a guy like Wagner. But that's only like 5% of my brain.

I think I read that they needed $9 million for their draft class. And I’m not really interested in overpaying Schultz long term. $11 million this year is more than enough.

Honestly go get Wagner or Barr one or the other.

Then call the Falcons see what's up with Grady Jarrett. If that gets no traction sign A. HICKS.

This would narrow down our choices in the draft. Makes the draft much more palatable.

The rookie pool is $9.7 million but the actual cap space required is a calculation based on adjusting that pool total by a dollar amount (league minimum which is $705K in 2022) times the number of picks a team has. Over the Cap had the effective cap space required estimates and had the Cowboys at $3.5 million or so.

The logic behind that calculation is that the draft picks take the place of people already on the roster who are eating up cap space. So while the rookie pool is $9.7 million, those drafts picks could/would likely replace 9 guys counting against the the Top 51 in the cap making near league minimum and ergo, the team would only need to account for an additional $3.5 million or so.

In other words, it would cost the Cowboys $3.5 million more to add all 9 draft picks and replace 9 people counting against the cap already.

I know I'm being repetitive, but they should sign Wagner and a good OG/OC. Then, improve through the draft

Thanks for that information. But I have to say I much prefer Spotrac to over the cap’s often sketchy information.

I like Spotrac better as well but the math still holds in this case and their estimates for cap hits for rookies is roughly the same as Over the Cap (Total rookie pool is like $9.6 versus ($9.7 million or so). Regardless of which one you use, the Cowboys need anywhere from $3.4 to $3.7 million in additional cap space for their rookies (again because the rookies would be replacing guys on the Top 51 already counting against the cap).

Here is a longish explanation of this. Apologies for the length.

No apologies necessary. I always appreciate anyone taking the time and effort to share knowledge and information.

Thanks!
