I know this may sound like a really weird theory, but I thought of it this afternoon when paying my electric bill. Maybe Chuckles has a serious hangup like I do about owing people money or the feeling of "not being in the clear"....how in the hell else could you explain his phobia of trying to win the Cap Bowl every year....I am beginning to wonder if he acts as if this is his money and does this in his personal life too. I pay bills the second they are e-mailed to me and do not like the feeling of being beholden to anyone for anything monetarily. The refusal to do ANYTHING big in Free Agency is very, very, very strange...maybe it has nothing to do with any theory on how to build a team, and simply the way his chuckle head is wired.

Stephen is no fool, he has a degree in chemical engineering and played ball in Arkansas. So he knows a little something about football and is definitely book smart for sure.

BUT, it doesn’t look like he is a risk taker or as business savvy like daddy. So, I can only surmise that he is both conservative and analytical with the team’s business decisions.

What say you?

'Mannix' - My thinking is that
A) S. Jones remembers the bad trades and FA acquisitions orchestrated by his father before his roles in the franchise football operations expanded - he doesn’t want to repeat those errors;
B) He is trying to emulate Bill Belichick in his method of acquiring player talent that come with no high price tags - guys that show potential to get better.

I think he's just out of his league. He was born into money and into the NFL. That doesn't mean he belongs. Let's say for instance I won the lottery or purchased property that had 10 billion dollars of gold in my yard. Then I bought an NFL team. Having money does not make me NFL smart. I graduated from college and have a Master's Degree and I'm even certified as a national sports performance therapist. But if you gave me billions and an NFL team I would be clueless. He's rich and educated but that doesn't equate to NFL smart.

Motorola, you're probably spot on. But, to be successful in the current NFL, teams do have to supplement their players with a high quality FA or two occasionally. That seems to be the formula for several of the most recent SB winners

He is following the Belichick methodology. The Cowboys just aren't as good at implementing it as Belichick.

We did see some Belichick like coaching from Dan Quinn with regards to getting the best from players.
- Marinelli would never have used Parsons as a pass rusher.
- Quinn got a lot out of rookies and fringe NFL players on the interior DL.
- Much of the improvement of Diggs was based on scheme changes which allowed Diggs to be a play maker.
- Rookie CB Joseph was well prepared when he had to start a game (-2 yards receiving allowed).

An 18 million dollar RB under preforms. A 20 million dollars DE under performs. A 20 million dollar WR under performed. A 40 million dollar QB struggles at times. A 10 million dollar RT was mixed up in some things. Well heck I'd start to be cheap too. Because that's about 45% of your cap right there.

This is the problem with nepotism.
The qualification is who's your daddy,
And not who's the best candidate based on educational, background , experience ect.

I just don't think he's a risk taker and just rather pay what he's familiar with in house.

No Stephen build a Stadium in a recession. He is just cheap when it comes to paying players like the old Saints and the old Cincy Bengals.

To be a great GM you have to study the game intensely and have a solid understanding of player value, not only for the team that employs you, but for the entire league as well.
SJ was never born to be a GM, but SJ was born Jerrys son, and Jerry wants to keep it all under the Jones control.
Not sure SJ even understands the game as much as Jerry and that is rather scary.
Not sure SJ has ever put the time in and the homework involved that is required to in order to have full understanding of even the salary cap, and the flexibility of creative thought.
SJ, if not for Jerry anointing him GM of the Dallas Cowboys would probably be a decent stock broker or DUI lawyer.

I'm going to draw from your post and put forward that Son didn't want to do those deals - but Father overruled him.
Remember Dez Bryant's last days in Dallas? As soon as 2017 season was over with, Stephen was was implicitly putting out in the press that the WR's production fell way short of the contract --and that a hard decision may take place if a salary reduction didn't take place.
Meanwhile Jerry was contradicting that view...saying Dez will be a Cowboy in 2018.
Stephen got his way- Bryant was cut - Bud Jerry asked Dez to come into his office to tell him in person he was gone.
Ongoing power struggle between the Boss and Heir Apparent; and the tide has been steadily going in favor of the "H.A.".

That might explain not spending 15-20M on a FA....but it doesn't explain running off both Gregory and Wilson.
