Patriots took Cole Strange. I like Strange but Smith is a better prospect.

There's definitely no question that Smith was a first rounder. He would have gone right after us. Not at all disappointed with the value there. Just would've gone for an immediate starter in Linderbaum

My Thoughts:
  • Great, size, length, power
  • Plus run blocking power if he doesn't lose balance (which happens too often)
  • Can be beat in the hand fight and needs to get better at getting his hands inside
  • Bad kick slide, and poor punch. He could develop into a OT in future years but he should start competing up against McGovern.
I think I like him a bit more than others I've been hearing. He had plenty of holding penalties but IMO so many of those relate to bad technique against speed rushers and footwork on his kick slide. If he's kicked inside to guard those aren't the same issue. The best guy on my board was Linderbaum and he's good at everything Smith isn't while lacking everything that makes Smith a good pick.
this report just made me cry....and they are going to put him inside. to replace Williams, who we all complained about because of penalties. This kid had 16 Penalties last year IN COLLEGE...going against inferior competition. how is he going to deal with NFL DTs and LBs who run like TEs and WRs and are same size as he is.....

Cowboys lost Collins and Williams. Biadasz hasn't done that well. Smith is near the end of his career. And they take a player who needs tons of development.
A team with a solid o-line can take this guy.
Dallas cannot.

But they did. Why am I not surprised?
I get it. I do. The frustration with this team is well-earned. After decades of futility, they don't deserve a pass. Unlike you, I'm not completely convinced that it was the wrong choice for exactly the first reasons you mentioned. other than, I think he will contribute immediately at guard and potentially at a high level.

Like I said, I don't hate it. But I absolutely understand why some do.

Yep by moving him next to the ALL Pro,HoF RG.

Cant deny that for whatever reason that O-Line crumbled from Week 9 or are we putting the whole issue on Connor Williams.

A good coach will overcome the issues he faces.....to me Philbin just relied on hope. Assuming the mornings rumors of us taking Smith were leaked by the team it appears Philbin has got the piece he wanted/needed.

BTW - I am happy we signed interior O-Linesman, just not him at 24. I'll bite on it, but this is Philbin's last chance saloon.

Would be interesting whether:

1) we had Zion/Kenyon ahead of him, but we realised they were going to go before we picked
2) Whether we see Smith as an eventual LT, or as a Guard....I suppose we 'expect' him to hit his Guard (floor) with a 'hope' he can hit his ceiling
Honestly, I don't think Zion was ever in consideration, they also liked Green cause some thought he can also play Tackle in this league.

That’s a great point . The Dolphins saw something in Williams I’m not sure what .

i'm guessing top athleticism and flex position ability.
Every NFL team thinks they can get more out of players per their own coaching staff.
One team's trash, is another team's treasure.

For example: Cowboys and Quinn got far more out of Jaylon Kearse than what the Titans did with him.

They were looking at Tackles, not interior lineman.

It was also said that Green and Zion had position flex, and Jerry (who continues to leak hints) made mentioned of importance of " flex"
so who knows if that would ever be a plan too.

The Cowboys own media guys (dc.com) said the Cowboys were very concerned about Green's knee issue.
- They don't think the Cowboys would have drafted him in the 1st due to the knee concerns.

That crew knew 5 picks ahead that Tyler Smith was going to be the pick.

They wanted to draft a Tackle who can start at Guard and eventually replace Tyron at LT. Some thought Green could play Tackle as well as Guard, but Zion was a pure interior player. Heard he was ranked 16th on their board and higher then both Guards.

My question is how has he gone this far with THAT bad of technique? And we aren’t talking about subtle nuance what maybe a lower level coach at Tulsa might not pick up…we are talking about the literal fundamentals of playing offensive line. The power and pancakes look cool and all, but Smith has flashes of some of the worst tape you will ever see from a 1st round pick
His OL coach was a graduate assistant until he got this job 2 years ago.

Strange got whipped like a redheaded step-child at the Senior Bowl 1-on-1 drills by Travis Jones.

I looked like a high school kid trying to block Aaron Donald.

Supposedly Mel Kiper in his final mock draft, pegged Tyler Smith to the Cowboys in 1st round.

Is that Connor Williams draft report card.

Yeah, say what you want about these guys, but they do generally know who the Cowboys like and don't like

Connor Williams was “ kicked inside “ and the refs had holding # 52 on speed dial . Hopefully Philbin can coach some of the bad habits out of him . Learn from Zack Martin and Tyrone Smith , he might turn out to be just what the line needs. Large and nasty .

Conner Williams was getting pushed backwards which is why he was holding.

But how long will that take (under Philbin's expert tutelage), taking into account he's got to learn (albeit lesser) technical position?
We have seen evidence with the development of Steele, who doesn't possess anywhere close the physical traits that Smith has.

Yes, Philbin made Steele into a a good player. He was very raw coming out of college.

FYI, Tyler Smith was my favorite player in this entire draft.

The others were Zion, Travis Jones and Jameson Williams.

Penning and Raiman are also incredibly raw. If a team is going to draft a raw OL, then might as well take the highest upside player.

Physically, Tyler Smith makes Raimann look like a middle school kid.

who's your source as you dodnt mention this pre-draft.
I'm sure we'll get the spin from the FO, when has Jerry admitted anything.
The danger of this Guard call me possible Tackle is that there's a distinct chance of falling between both stools.
