Where did you grade the Travis Frederick pick?

I never speak in absolutes when dealing with human beings. Both these statements are false. I loved the pick and never thought of it as a reach but thought we should have gotten more in the trade.
Ok, 90+ percent of fans hated the pick.

I did too, until I watched the film. Then I had hopes for him. The same evolution I am having with Smith.

I hope that turns out the same way lol

Nobody liked it.

Anyone who says they didn't reach is lying.
You are the liar. I loved the pick and did not consider it a reach at all. I was beyond ecstatic that we finally got a monster of a C who wouldn't be pushed back into Romo's lap.

I had no issue with the Frederick pick. I had watched him work at Wisconsin and thought it was a great fit. As an old running back talented biguns up front is always a plus to me. I think Smith will turn out to be a good pick as well. I have a sneaking suspicion that the holding calls he got in college were largely a result of playing tackle and his not being as good in space thus reaching too much. Put him at guard and take advantage of his power and the fact that he will be next to Tyron for the next 2-3 years and I think we'll be in good shape. Then in two years he will either have developed enough to play tackle or be a dominant guard. Either way, it's a win.
Fredsy was rated as a late 1st/2nd round talent. He went exactly where he should have gone, the 31st pick in the draft. Anyone who thought it was a reach was simply not doing their homework. Great pick, and I thought so at the time.

I don't think KSK or myself was active on this site back then as we both frequented the Dallas Cowboys official site chat until it was shut down.

I didn't grade it beforehand, but I was ecstatic when they chose Frederick. The O-line needed serious help and they took him in the first rather than risk it.

I'm actually fairly happy that they chose Smith. Could they have done better? Maybe perhaps even probably...but deciding that now is a recipe in silly because the draft is a crap shoot. We'll see how he develops.

Well, they did have a private workout with him and I don't think that was Booger & Son in lawn chairs with little umbrellas in their drinks with the son going "Daddsy, make him do jumping jacks again, I just love watching big men bounce".

They do have some knowledge of his skills and I don't think they're planning on throwing him in at LT right away. Big Smitty is getting a L'il Smitty to help bring along at LG and I do think that's a good thing.

A lot of us weren't but it was the same over there, lots of unhappy posters.

Tyler is NFL ready from a physical standpoint.

When people say someone is "NFL ready" they do not mean physically. Everyone drafted is ready physically (unless they are injured) or they would not be getting drafted. They mean that a player is not so raw that they could find something similar on a sushi menu. He is a very very raw talent which is the opposite of Frederick. I get why some people love raw talents as they figure if they could just be coached into learning the fundamentals they could be great but I always wonder one thing: you have been playing football for over a decade so how have you yet to learn the fundamentals in all those years and what is going to change now?

When the guys at “The Ranch” started being ridiculous and literally harassing people outside of the site because you got on their “list” I headed over here. That was around 06 and became full time here in 07.

One of the issues with the Frederick pick was that we traded back to do so and didn't get what many felt was fair value. I think that was the bigger issue than actually picking Frederick and what pissed people off. Frederick working out was coincidental at that point because even if he was our target we didn't know if he would be there for sure or not. The other issue is many wanted Reid or Floyd who were there for the picking (some wanted Xavier Rhodes too IIRC) when we made the trade and were subsequently picked. Frederick being great made it work out for us either way, but it may have been as much dumb luck as anything else

I almost nailed Frederick. I had him in the early 2nd round. Loved the player. Couldn't understand why some had him in the 5th.

I didn't see him as a gutless quitter though.

On a side note, I also had Tyler Smith in the upper half of the 2nd round. The big difference is there were much better players on the board this time around than in 2013.

I have nothing against the kid we drafted and I hope he works out. He deserves a year or two to see what he is going to be. I do have a concern about where they drafted him since he would have been available in round 2. But I certainly don’t qualify as an NFL talent guru.

I do have a problem with the two clowns making the picks. Will McClay is the only thing separating us from being a Washington or NYJ disaster.

I always want the Cowboys to win. It’s just hard watching the same football dunces giggling and goofing in a press conference and expect any Cowboys fan- after 26 years and 3 playoff wins- to have any confidence.
Yea, I suppose we should just be pleased we didn’t trade up for a WR or CB.

The only real criticism I’ve read is he wasn’t a 1st round talent . And the next two guys drafted after we picked were more talented . Those are fair criticisms.

I just went back and read the 100+ page thread the night we drafted The Beard. This proves that most of us have no clue. I mean a few were level heade, but for the most part we all blasted the pick. Even the talking heads were scratching their heads. The truth is we just have to wait and see.

If y’all want some good reads, go back and look at draft night threads from every year. Really funny and insightful
I liked the Fredbeard pick

I was upset about the Frederick pick because we traded down with a safety on the board that I wanted. The safety didn't pan out and Frederick became a pro bowler.

It will take some time to know whether this was another reach pick for need. Hard to knock the need. We let two of our starters on OL go. Definitely major need. But did we pass on more talent ? Those are legit questions we won’t know answer to for awhile.
