A little more critical tape of Sam Williams...

****NOT-AN-OFFICIAL-SOURCE*** breaks it all down: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly.

With Dan Quinn's help, Sam Williams can fix his flaws, improve his game and become a monster for the Cowboys.

Obviously being a rookie, he needs some refinement on his technique and more pass rush moves to use against these big OTs. .. but he does have the ingredients you cannot coach. DQ, and staff will teach him that and he will get better by leaps and bounds. Having Parsons next to him will help him a lot with the offense focused on Parsons.

I don’t care if he sucks against the run year one. He’s not playing base.

Yeah it’s not like RG was great agains the run. This guy is bigger and I like his upside as a pass rusher more than Randy’s. Put it to this way….if RG never smoked weed and player in the SEC I don’t think he would have had the production SW had.

Fowler or Armstrong can take care of the run this year. We just need Williams to replace some of the pass rush we lost with Gregory's departure.

the problem with the pick isnt the player but when we drafted him. He was projected a 3rd or 4th round pick. It was an overreach for another project player.

Did Dallas even draft a day 1 starter?

It was a great breakdown by Law but a few things I disagree with after i watched a lot of tape on Sam (De).

1. He is not just going to be a pass rush specialist. That was my initial impression as well based on scouting reports and highlights. After studying..he will be a full time player...at least as much as any other DE with the rotations we have. Gregory had 19 whole tackles last year guys...pretty sure SW can match that production. SW was in a bad fit defense for his skillset. Law called it a 3-4 but it really was a 3-3-5. Many games, including against powerhouse Alabama, he was lining up headup or even inside shade with the T. He was constantly taking on the big boys, te's and rbs. He won't do any of that in dallas but it was good for him bc it shows he is tough and fights.

2. SW runs the bendy angle just fine. He just wasn't asked to do it a lot. In Dallas...it will probably be the majority of what he is asked to do. Scream around the outside, hard cut inside to switch it up. Also...a lot of the critique of SW redirecting his rush outside was also scheme. He was maintaining contain, to a fault. The other DE did the same if you notice. The guy had 12.5 sacks in this defense in which he was the only threat. I looked at Aiden Hutchinson...if SW played on michigan in that "Wide 9" type defense with Ojabo on the other side...he would have had 20 sacks and won the heisman.

Just love the pick, only thing i don't have is all the off the field "issues". Only on i know about is the sexual assault that was dropped. Is there more?

They drafted 2 day 1 starters.

Smith and Williams will start.

Tolbert will be 3rd wr, which is like a starter in this day and age.

Same with the 4th round TE....he will play a ton.

I think he can be coached into a stud. Just from watching that take the thing that stood out to me is the point about not really having many moves. When he speed rushed using his athleticism he could be ridden out of the play because he went too high. That’s the stuff he will need to work on.

I hope you are right but both Smith & Williams are raw and need coached up. Not sure you can say they will start day 1

Fowler can take care of the run??? That's perhaps a little wishful thinking

I'm not too worried about this kid not being good against the run as some I guess and that's assuming it even ends up being the case. We'll start Tank and Armstrong who can both play the run. Gholston was hit and miss last year but came in with high run grades so hopefully he too will be in the early down rotation. As far as rushing the passer goes we rotate a lot and I expect that to continue. Tank, Armstrong, Fowler, Basham, Williams and of course Micah. I think we'll be fine at DE and if this kid is a s good as he seems to be against the pass it will be fantastic for us regardless of how he plays the run. It's DT I'm worried about on the DL

It still surprised me when fans take anything from anyone's film breakdown.
You could do a film breakdown of Tom Brady and make him look worse than Quincy Carter. Just show a few plays and pretend that is the player.

Obviously Williams or any college player is raw. Watch some of the Micah Parson pre draft film breakdown and you will see people talk about his limited ability as a pass rusher. That Jeff Cavalier mouth piece used to sound off on what a mistake it would be to draft Parsons because of his lack of production as a pass rusher.

Williams had 12.5 sacks in a big conference. He has the size, speed and production.

Will this carry over? Who knows. Certainly not this guy and whichever 10 plays he cherry picks to prove his opinion.

You don't make picks based on where some other people project them. You trust your scouting and make the best picks possible at the appropriate time to improve your team the most and you will have a hard time finding 5 teams that draft better than the Cowboys. They picked De in the 2nd because their scouts told them that he wouldn't be available in the 3rd round but Tolbert most likely would be. It worked out perfectly for them. I'm just glad you and some of the other "experts" on this forum are not running our draft.
