Nobody is talking because most fans think drafting for need is a good idea....which is exactly what this team does.
Exactly.
This draft was taylor made for those that advocate drafting for need .The Cowboys basically approached this draft like going into a supermarket with a shopping list.
I knew what position they would be drafting in every round.
The Cowboys left a lot of way better players on the board.
I knew the second they passed up Jermaine Johnson they were following a script.

If we don't draft for needs then how do we fill holes?
Free agency, but I realize we take a pass on that.

Counting on the draft to fill a clear need for a starter is exactly what they did here, then ***** your own board in some weak attempt to cover it.

Secret sauce I guess.

Maybe they get away with it here, and I'm happy about Smiths upside, but IMO it's generally a bad approach to leave better players on the board because you think you are set at a position and have a greater need elsewhere.

Drafting is the only avenue the team leaves itself to improve the roster. So— by default, they will be drafting to fill needs more years than not
I agree that that's the case here, and maybe it doesn't come back to bite them this time, but it's generally not a good way to go about a draft

Counting on free agency to fill holes can be just as 50/50 as the draft, taking a chance on drafting is far cheaper and less impactful financially if it fails. They prefer to pay their own free agents.

What this team does is draft well. Which ever way they do it. WAS CEEDEE A NEED PICK?
Not at all, but he was a very highly ranked jersey seller that the team wasn't going to pass on.

If London slipped to 24 they wouldn't have passed.

But they went into this draft with a gaping hole at LG, and by miracle, their top ranked OG was on the board....even if they think he played at Utah.

And it also causes you to leave better players on the board.

Long term....not a great idea.

But hey, the Joneses have a proven track record of success......they act that way anyway.

CEEDEE, was the BPA on their board, had nothing to do with Jersey sale. They did the right thing taking Smith, they

Bigger question is, which player would have a bigger impact in the life of the 5 yr contract? Cine would have to share reps with Kearse, Wilson & Hooker. Smith has less competition at Guard and could potentially play LT in the future, which has the highest positional value of the three.

Yeah and left guard looked pretty deep and solid about 13 months ago.

I'm not unhappy about Smith, but they left better players on the board because of need. That's extremely clear.
