You can say they filled a need they should have filled in free agency, but were there any viable candidates? Was there anyone with the potential Smith has to get the running game going, and hopefully protect our QB?

You don't draft for need. You sign free agents for need. The draft should be for acquiring the best talent you can regardless of position.
We didn't need a DE in this draft at all. We had Tank, Armstrong, Golston, Fowler, Basham, Parsons, and Odighizuwa on our roster already. So saying they just flat out drafted for needs is not true.

But yes, I agree with you. We should make it a habit of going into the draft with no clear needs.

Yeah and left guard looked pretty deep and solid about 13 months ago.

I'm not unhappy about Smith, but they left better players on the board because of need. That's extremely clear.
He is more of a traits, high upside pick at a position of need. Clearly they didn't like the two edge rushers as much as the fans did. It was either going to be Lloyd or Cine. Not in love with either prospect, as much as I like Smith's long-term potential. Team needed to fix their run game, Smith helps that area right away.

Sometimes that's not possible. There isn't always going to be a good enough free agent available to fill a spot.

CEEDEE, was the BPA on their board, had nothing to do with Jersey sale. They did the right thing taking Smith, they
Nah....Jerry wasn't excited at all about that part of it.

He stayed out of the number selection lol.

I'm not saying it's the main reason they took him.

But if Lamb didn't slip, KLavon Chiasson would probably be a Cowboy, because they 'needed' a pass rusher. Then, since it takes forever to admit mistakes, maybe they don't take Parsons last year...

Point being....needs change all the time, and quite fast. Taking the best players is the better play over the long run.

We absolutely needed a DE and Jermaine Johnson was BPA.

I don't disagree and I don't dislike Smith.

Point is needs change quickly (see my post directly above).

Take the better player.

In this case, I do believe that Cine had a 1st round grade and Smith a 2nd. Whoever fudged Jerry's list forgot to pull Utah when they plugged in Smiths name for that of Lloyd.

Pathetic on several levels, but that's exactly what happens when you leave yourself needing a starting player going into a draft.

They're selling Jerseys regardless, you don't draft BPA if the BPA at a position of need is close to the BPA. You're not drafting qb because he's the BPA or any player that's not seeing the field if that position is secure.

Yes I know. But I would at least try to fill all holes in free agency. Just in case the draftee we're relying on gets injured before the season. What can go wrong will go wrong. Wishing for the best while not preparing for the worse is dumb.

You're upset about something you can't prove? Opinions vary, so prove to us Johnson was the BPA.
Just about every mock has him in the top 10. I'm not upset. I'm disappointed they didn't take the best player.
How did you like that Greg Ellis.Bobby Carpenter and Taco Charleton pick?

Let me try it this way.....

They left at least two players with higher grades on the board to take a guard because they needed to draft a starter, and didn't think they would get that after the first round.

Is that not fair to say?

I get the whole BPA based on need thing, but is that good business in general over the long term?

Watch and see if safety isnt a "need" again in ten months.

All I'm saying here is they should be actually leaving themselves in a spot to be able to draft the best players regardless of position, not just say it.

Yep. When you have a lackadaisical approach to free agency, you by default have to approach the draft as filling needs.

And they may very well get away with it here, and I hope they do.

Over the long haul its not a great philosophy, generally speaking.

They did the same thing last year with Joesph after not getting Surtain/Horn.

And it also causes you to leave better players on the board.

Long term....not a great idea.

But hey, the Joneses have a proven track record of success......they act that way anyway.

you’re wasting your time arguing with a moron

QB is different.

Pretty sure most understand that.

I don't worry about things I can't change or control. If I was running the Cowboys draft I would have picked Smith in the first also. Then OT Abraham Lucas. My 5th would have been DE Isaiah Thomas. And my 6th would have been LG Marquis Hayes. But what the Cowboys done in the draft doesn't disappoint me, because I have no say in the matter.
