And I’ll bet both Gallimore and Odiggy grade out better than 57th in 2022.

I said I was glad Watkins came back and the peanut gallery snickered . Best grade on the team . Dudes 28yrs old is not breaking the bank and actually had a pick 6 I believe . More memorable than any plays last yrs second pick made , our Kentucky CB .

Those nuts snicker at anything positive! According to some of them, ALL our players are JAGS at best, our coaches crap, the FO the worst…

Part of my lack of optimism at the DT position is I've yet to see one of them get their 4 game suspension like D Law and Irving did before their "breakout," performances.

The front office has used 3 day 2 picks at the 3T Defensive Tackle position and haven't gotten much production out of any of them:

Hill-raw prospect that was handpicked by Marinelli. Has shown flashes, but missed a ton of time due to injury. Last chance to make the next step as he is on the roster bubble.

Gallimore-has the frame as a NT, playing the 3T position. Just like Hill, more of a flash player who has missed a ton of time due to injury. Has to take the next step or he will be our Hill next season fighting for a roster spot.

Osa-the only prospect that was drafted by the current staff. Was real good early on, but appeared to hit the rookie wall. A year to add more weight to his frame is needed. Shows the most promise out of the 3.
Gallimore had a freak injury in the preseason. Before that, he looked poised for a breakout season and did play well with a gimpy arm to close out the season. Hill has made a few plays here and there but for the most part has not been good. Not seeing the comparison. I think he takes the next step and locks down his role on that line.

Gallimore would be my best guess for who steps up. This was supposed to happen last year but then he dislocated his elbow and missed most of the season.

Ironically, Gallimore seems like an ideal 1T for Marinelli. Low center of gravity, quick burst, straight ahead, high motor player. Not the lateral agility or length for a 3T, though he's the best we have now.

They're doing the Crawford with Osa. Another guy who should be a DE on a 3 man front forced into 3T.

I'm hoping we play more 3 man fronts where he would be a better fit.
Our defensive big guys the last 2 drafts: 2 NTs and one 3-4DE.

Neville would work out as a 3-4 DE too. Straight line speed plus power and hustle. 4.79 40 at 304.

I think the 3-4 front is where we are headed. We are slowly getting the personnel to run it. Sure, we will have many looks, but that front is the best to stop the run.

Gallimore needs to have more of an impact this season, he will be healthy for the entire offseason.

How can we asked these 3 techs to ' step up ", when it could be a case of they are just not that talented ?

- They may be just decent-serviceable types. Premium interior pass rushing DTs just don’t fall off trees.
And even the successful ones that are drafted in first rounds are spare and few.

- I don’t wanna just to go off “frame’ and as I’ve always said, its about guys whose size or speed can translate on the playing field,
than what they measure up in shorts and workouts.
If a guy can play stronger and bigger than what his size suggests, ..if a guy plays much faster than what he times out in a 40 yard run…

- Frankly I don’t want Gallimore as an 1 tech, NT role.
His game is really not run gapping, .. 2-gapping. His game and forte is rushing the passer and getting up the field.

- Because of his wresting background, Osa may have a better knack for leverage and getting his pads lower than Neville.
That's extremely valuable in shedding blocks and gaining penetration.

- Gallimore may be the more physically imposing when it comes to a combination strength and explosiveness.
His sack vs Washington is an example of that. But he’s still working on leverage and not playing with his pads so high up.
And like you’ve said Neville also has missed some significant time due to ’21 injury that was critical to his development.

The majority of snaps will be Nickel or Big Nickel. Think of a 3-4 but with one ILB replaced by a Nickel DB.
- i.e. The front 5 looks like a 3-4, but it is a Nickel defense.
sDE: Stand-Up DE
MP: Micah Parsons
If they play with 3 Safeties, then Kearse is the Nickel DB which makes it Big Nickel.

.....MP.....DL.....DL.....DL.....sDE
...........................LB......................Nickel DB

On short yardage against 2 TEs or a TE & FB:
.....sDE.....DT.....DT.....DT.....sDE
...................MP................LVE

  • In a 4-man DL, there are 3 basic ways defenses play the DTs:
    • 1: Run downs: Traditional 1tech and 3tech.
    • 2: Passing downs: Two 3techs (i.e. Each DT aligned as a 3tech with both B gaps open).
    • 3: Run or Pass: Two 3tech type players but with 1 aligned as as 1tech.
If Gallimore plays 1tech, it will be in scenario #3 above.

Gallimore and Odighi will often be together in scenario #2 above.

If you are a significant player with talent and abilities, I'd need the current DC to determine if this and that player is/can be a role fit for his scheme.
That's another reason why i do like versatile and hybrid-pseudo type players, as well as multi-versatile DC's.
They can be implemented in both 4-3 or 3-4, nickel packages than just one scheme set.

If Gallimore and Hill are seen as suitable talent and scheme fit role, and the mentality an drive to compete, i'd expect a versatile DC such as Quinn to
find a role and spots on the roster even for players that were not drafted under his regime.

This is Hill's last year with Dallas. I am pretty sure of that. I think he is a JAG but better than some people give him credit. Hill is not and is never going to be an Aaron Donald. But I think he will be better than Maliek Collins ever was.

This is the year Gallimore will reach his potential. Whatever he is in 2022 is as good as he will ever be.

Odighizuwa has good potential be be an inside pass rusher but I think he has another year before he peaks. If he shows up this year I think it is a really good sign about his future.

I think the Cowboys are expecting Ridgeway to be pretty good in his rookie year. Or maybe they are just hoping.

I am not sure why there should be any optimism over Bohanna. I thought he was pretty awful last year. I think Ridgeway passes him by.

Watkins surprised me last year at times. But Watkins has already peaked.

At least Malik Collins started- and even at his rookie year in 2016,..Despite Collin's issues with broken gained the necessary invaluable game experience that has really been absent from Trysten Hill.

And with Osa and Gallimore already here, and likely ahead of Trysten Hill, I have my doubts that Hill will be a starter here.
He has some physical abilities, but it's been several circumstances and situations that has him so far behind.

This is a great description of what the alignment will look like. They have several edge players now who can effectively be stand up edge rushers. Kearse is going to be a big part of their nickel defense.

No doubt, Gallimore is still developing. As you said, probably more of a 3T then a 1T despite his size, where his strengths lie within the pass rush, not in the run game. Osa was more of a NT at UCLA and he is still learning a new position. Positive early results, but really fell off. He is the better run defender and should be playing on the early downs with Watkins. Make or break time for Hill, either he takes the next step or he plays somewhere else next yr. Has to find more consistency.
