Why not grab Baker Mayfield? Dak may not be the answer

The better question rather then Jimmy G or Baker what about Cooper Rush . If Dak were to miss time is the coaching staff automatically handing Rush the Keys ? I was impressed with his performance in Minnesota yet that was a squad that didn’t make the playoffs and fired it’s HC. I think the backup job needs at least some kind of preseason competition .

And DiNucci and Will Grier are not it .

I can’t wait to see how this thread plays out….

2 burly fellows in tank tops with Stephenville rockers on their vests roughed up a poster. The mods showed up, sermonized, banned one tough and sent a hit person to dispose of the instigator. Some minor fires were quelled by @Cowpolk and I briefed the NFL grief counselors. @Typhus made coffee and made a video of the commotion.

I believe baker at a reasonable 15-20 million contract will be a far better option for the cowboys in the next 4-6 years than Dak .
Mayfield can ignite this offense and make better use of the receivers and OL we have .
Not to mention that dak has become injury prone, and has wild inconsistencies and slumps during the season.

This FO has shown an unwillingness to even attempt to get any potential starting QB to compete with Dak. They seem to believe he will always be looking over his shoulder or maybe intimidated by competition. They don't want a QB controversy and so we are where we are. Dak must have a very fragile mentality.

They literally just signed Andy Dalton a few years ago in Dak’s contract year. Y’all pull these narratives out of your ***. You can think Dak sucks…that’s fine. But no one who has paid attention thinks the Cowboys or Dak are afraid of competition.

As far as Dalton goes Dak breaks his ankle and Dalton helped us to a 3rd place finish in a 4 team division . And if the Egirls weren’t busy playing the Nate Sudfelds of the world who knows maybe they would have escaped the basement apartment .

Dalton Rush none of these QB’s are considered competition to # 4. . I am surprised this organization at some point needs to burn at least a 4th or 5th rounder to bring to camp and knock off the back up QB . Churn the roster .

That’s revisionist history…..you have a lot of people on this site who said Dalton would take Dak’s job lol….now he’s not competition lol.

Because we can't play the UTEP Miners every week. :laugh:I think most of the league has finally figured out Baker is overrated.

What is it with Cowboys fans who believe we can always turn another team's trash into gold? And this piece of trash is somehow better than our own starting QB?

They are in a great and tough position
They are a really good football team that was one dropped int from the super bowl
But they have a QB they have to run a particular offense with because that’s what he’s good at. They’d love to upgrade him but 10 other teams would like to upgrade their QB too. They used a pick on a QB they obviously thought could give them a guy who would give them more options in an offense but he’s not an elite prospects so changing is risky
Fortunately for them jimmy is a pro who isn’t gonna make waves no matter what they do
One of the toughest positions to be in is having a SB quality team but not having a SB quality QB because it’s the hardest position to find, there aren’t many of them and teams don’t let them go often. And when they do it’s expensive to get them
If they could keep that team together around him then he can win them a lot of games and there are worse starters in the nfl. But there are also half a dozen QB’s if not more that could give them a better chance to win a SB, they just aren’t available

Yeah, that 49ers team would be scary with an upgrade at QB. What I don't get, is why trade all those draft picks to move up for a first read/run QB in Trey Lance? What did they see in him that your average person didn't?

I agree, getting Baker, would be DFT's missing piece to three-peat. Smarts of Brady; arm of Allen; and maneuverability of Jackson.

Who in the world thought Andy Dalton was considered serious competition to Dak ? Dalton and Marvin Lewis tortured Bengal fans for a decade .
Many on here did. People thought Cowboys brought him in to get rid of Dak. I mean Catch for sure thought it but he also thought Dinucci would take Dak’s spot but I won’t even count him because he’s not all there mentally as is.

Not to mention that dak has become injury prone, and has wild inconsistencies and slumps during the season.

There are 2 problems:

1. Dak had already been restructured twice, meaning the dead money on his contract is so enormous, you can’t realistically cut/trade him for the entire duration of his deal. His dead cap each year remaining is more than his AAV; you lose salary cap space by not keeping him (it’s actually even worse than that, but that gets a bit complicated as to why). It ends in 2025, and it’s designed in such a way that if you don’t re-sign him to a longterm extension before then, you’ll immediately take a 20m$ cap hit… even though he’s a free agent. That’s more than Baker is even making. So Dak has to be the longterm QB, financially.

2. Baker is only on the books for 18m$ This year. If you want him for 4-6 years, you’ll then have to explain to his agent that you’re valuing him higher than a QB who’s being paid 40m$ a year. He then can just hold out, knowing you’ve put all your eggs in his basket, in which the franchise tag for 2023 will likely be around 35m$ due to the Stafford deal.

This means that you have to pay him no less than 42m$ annually on an extension, as that would be what his salary is on the second franchise tag, which is a 20% bump up from the first one. Players don’t typically take pay cuts on franchise tags when they know they will get 42m$ the second time they get tagged.

But let’s say Baker is a very reasonable guy (which he hasn’t really shown to this point), and he meets you in the middle. You get him for your 4-6 years at just under 40m$. That means you will be paying 2 QBs a combined 80m$ over the next 3 years, and 60m$ in 2025. Literally impossible is the closest terminology to properly explaining this hypothesis.

So Baker would be better then before Dak’s preinjury such as the first Six games of 2021 season?
That Dak
