So where are the Cowboys spending the majority of their cap space this year? According to spotrac.com, this is how the Cowboys rank in cap space by position groups vs the rest of the league:
  • Offense- Cowboys rank 6th in cap spending.
  • Defense- Cowboys rank 30th in cap spending.
  • Special Teams- Cowboys rank 27th in cap spending.
By position groups:
OFFENSE (overall ranked 6th in spending)
  • QBs- Cowboys rank 13th
  • RBs- Cowboys rank 1st (Zeke’s contract)
  • WRs- Cowboys rank 27th
  • TEs- Cowboys rank 6th
  • OL- Cowboys rank 11th
DEFENSE (overall ranked 30th in spending)
  • DL- Cowboys rank 15th
  • LBs- Cowboys rank 27th
  • DBs- Cowboys rank 23rd
A couple of things that stand out:
  1. That Zeke contract looks even sillier vs rest of the league.
  2. With contracts for Diggs and Parsons looming in a couple years, the defense will certainly command more cap space.
Below is the link where I got the info if you want to do a deeper dive into this.

Zeke is on his way out… they are cutting high priced vets (or they are taking pay cuts like D Law) as soon as their escape clause hits.

Zeke gets one more year… then they cut him.

Where you are in contracts makes such a huge difference
Our offense as a whole has several players who are on second contracts, defense has more of the talent being young guys
Cap spending by position and side of the ball is really controlled by how many guys you have on first contracts
What it shows is our defensive stars are young and offensive are on second contracts
As you said defense is about to change as in going up in next couple years. Offense will too as guys like Zeke and Tyron get to the end of their deals
That’s why I never got fans who just want to spend to be spending. Spending is coming and carrying over money helps with that spending that’s coming

Or renegotiate. My hope is for a clean break. But it sounds like JJ and SJ will never cut ties. We will see.

I agree.......look at it this way. With Pollard being a free agent after the season, we have a chance for TWO new RBs but I don't see it happening. In other words, I don't them letting Zeke AND Pollard walk. My guess is Pollard will right himself out of our range and they will keep Zeke one more year and draft an RB with a high pick.

Yep. I can see the Jones boys refusing to see the writing on the wall and keeping him on the roster out of loyalty

Pollard has a chance to make himself some future dough this year. I believe the Cowboys would like to keep him for the right price.

Funny thing is, I still don’t think the Cowboys have figured how to properly use Pollard. He’s not a workhorse kind of back. But he is a Swiss Army knife. He could rush 8-10 carries a game, line up in the slot or place in the backfield, then catch 4-5 passes a game. If he could get 15 touches a game from a variety of places on the field I think he could really be an even better weapon.

I am not convinced the Cowboys will retain Diggs when his rookie deal is up. I have a feeling he will sign elsewhere.

I think they will get a deal done with Parsons, when his rookie deal is up but I predict the Cowboys offensive spending will still be lopsided compared to defense.

That’s certainly plausible with the way the team’s cap philosophy has gone the last 20 years. I still think the Cowboys will make a serious attempt to sign Diggs. Unless he has a down year this year, he’s going to cost quite a bit.

Stephen said the money being saved is for Diggs, CeeDee and Parsons. Those three are not going anywhere barring injuries.

And we see the flawed Roster built by Jones that its taking roughly 3 years to fix. Too much money in the offense, specifically with WR and RB and not enough on the defense. Its why guys like Cooper are no longer here and Zeke will be toast after this season.

When did DFlaw take a paycut ?

After @conner01 pointed out to me that we could carry cap space over to the next year I looked it up and the team has to submit a request to the league office to do so the day after their last regular season game.

We fans have to put aside our wishful thinking and think like Jerry and Stephen. I would love to resign Diggs assuming he continues his thieving ways, but what I want and what Jerry can or will pay are two different things.
