I was listening to Dallas sports radio host and writer for the Athletic Bob Sturm this afternoon and he was openly disgusted with the amount of talking Jerry Jones does weekly that ends up undermining the team.

In fact, Sturm went on to say that Jerry has basically become the Stephen A Smith of NFL executives. Jerry is on TV or radio a minimum of 4-5 times each week and his blustering, provocative and stupid comments are more like a carnival barker than a GM. He doesn’t even know the names of his players. It’s like Stephen A does- just try to be outrageous enough to get people to look and pay attention. It’s glorified click bait.

No other GM or sports owner does this. None of them hold pressers in the locker room after each game. Zero. Nada. He has 2 radio shows each week, has a pre-game interview before each game and a post game press conference after each game. And this morning through in an impromptu presser after his two previous radio shows earlier this week.

Why should anyone care? The only reason I care is all his stupid drivel undermines his head coach, his players and makes this team more like a circus than a real football team. The Dallas Cowboys players and coaches not only have to beat the opposing team, they have to overcome the absurdity of their owner/GM/president/hot dog selector and whatever other titles he holds.
How many other GMs would, if there was someone interested in what they had to say. This team generates a lot of interest outside the state it’s located, much more than most. As long as those interviews generate ratings the media are going to seek them! What egotistical idiot isn’t going to talk when a camera is put in their face?

He has to do all that PR and hyping because he knows the team can't regularly compete with the elite in the NFL, health or not. He's literally just trying to keep people engaged and attending games.

Jerry is funny. Just enjoy it while he is here. He won't be here much longer and you will miss him when he is gone.

It's pretty bad when you're compared to Stephen A Smith. I agree with the comparison. What I don't like about is what you stated, the circus atmosphere. Also I don't like Jerry basically welcoming a QB controversy. Regardless of where anyone stands on the Dak issue, or how good Rush is or any other opinions we fans have of players. The Owner and GM of the team should never be stirring the pot with the media over locker room issues and team chemistry. Utterly embarrassing. But more than embarrassing is how destructive that is. I'm not high on Dak but Jerry totally did him dirty. How are our players supposed to put their heart and soul into the team when the owner of the team is causing division? This is why we are a toxic, dysfunctional organization. Completely ridiculous IMHO.

...you gotta remember, Jerry is a product of left over remnants from depression period.. haha!.

His dad probably instilled talk yer *** off skills and SELL every time you get the chance.

All that came from when three quarters of America was in crisis and poor.

Only way to survive, was to Sell.

His product, Shiny Dallas Cowboys. Which to him equals to the likes of Ford and Rockefeller.
It's in the Jones' family ancestry. :muttley:

Sturm has just now come to the conclusion that Jerry doesn't shy from the media? Jerry is far from being Stephen A Smith but both are attention getters, albeit different styles. Jerry has nothing on Stephen who is bombastic, blustering and combative. Jerry is almost 80 years old and I don't expect him to know ALL the names of his players. When is the last time Jerry held a press conference in the locker room? Was it recently? I don't even know if he can even find the locker room or avoid serious injury losing his footing in there.

I don't put much stock in what he says anymore. Jerry is a figurehead and GM in name only. I would be more worried about Stephen Jones's influence and control over the team than Jerry. Ironically Sturm somewhat sounds like Jerry grasping at short, mushy and old straws.

Thats fine and fair. But I admire Jerry Jones for willing to pay players based on performance...even if small sample size. He wants to pay his players or performers...even taking risks to pay them at the expense of depth. Dumb...maybe. But he wants to do it his way...without scamming or having to underpay or get a performer on a "value" contract...he would prefer to pay them. Just like you would prefer your employer to pay you. I suspect most players and former players love him as opposed to despise him. And he would prefer to win like that instead of players feeling like poker chips..

Hes a more hands on GM than most...the coach is not in complete control. So be it.
But that's just a stupid way of thinking. Or at least questionable. Success beats all other aspects. Can't win for a longer period of time? Then you're doing it wrong, no matter what you do. End of story.

Jones absolutely has way too big of a mouth that undermines his coaches. Most of the questions he gets asked should be answered with, "That's a question for our head coach, Mike McCarthy." Then Jones should only answer questions about things off the field, like the upkeep of the stadium, what services are in the stadium, the upkeep of the practice field facilities, etc.

One difference, however, is Jones is not paid to be a troll like Stephen A. Smith is. Smith is basically worthless to listen to because his style is just to make everything inflammatory. He's one of the worst sports pundits on TV, but at least he's doing his job, unlike Jones. Jones should just butt out. Smith should adjust his style to something that's not so absurdly exaggerated and explains the game rather than distorting it.

Truth. Your post made me think of P. T. Barnum, so I did a little comparison.

P. T. Barnum:
Phineas Taylor Barnum was an American showman, businessman, and politician, remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus with James Anthony Bailey.

Jerry Jones:
Jerral Wayne Jones is an American businessman who is the owner, president, and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys football team in the National Football League. Jones will be remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and lies that he was a good General Manager in the NFL. His efforts turned the Dallas Cowboys into the longest running Circus act in NFL history.

I think it’s simple- Jerry doesn’t want to win bad enough to do what it takes to win a championship. It’s not a big secret. The winning owners of the last 26 SBs all hired a qualified GM and delegated authority to them, then held them accountable for results. Jerry wants play big shot more than he wants to win.
"...People high in the personality trait of narcissism, who psychologists refer to as everyday narcissists, are people who have a grandiose sense of self-importance or superiority. Everyday narcissists are status-oriented and motivated to pursue goals like fame and financial wealth that either enhance their social status or demonstrate their superiority to others...

...However, I think the larger take away is that personality traits influence the pursuit of meaning in life... For everyday narcissists, financial and material rewards are a meaningful part of life, whereas for people low in the personality trait of narcissism they are not..."
- Dr. Andrew Abeyta, Social Psychology, North Dakota State University (PsyPost interview (link)
I agree. The answer is simple. People have been stating the answer for years.

Jerry Jones does want to win. He wants to win his way. You are right. Jones wants to win by amassing enormous wealth while flaunting to the entire world he can be richer than anyone else and be a football genius at the same time. Most observers should agree that is not a focused personal strategy for winning at all costs in my opinion.

Jones does want to play big shot but the underlying question is why? Why is his motivation isolated on a remote island, while most professional team sports owners are huddled together on the mainland? Jones has been literally spitting this explanation into peoples' faces for decades but it remains largely unaccepted.

HIs inflexible behavior is not simple greed and/or ego. All the other owners share those personality traits but at a far lesser degree than Jones. What makes Jones different from his peers?

Answer: Jerry Jones is a narcissist.

Bob Sturm just mad his boy Dak looking like the scrub he is and has always been. Of course even he can’t defend Dak any longer and his article on August 12th in the Atlantic, he makes quite a few excuses of why he defended Dak so much, including that he has such a nice personality.

Unfortunately in Cap era you can’t pay all of your players. You must find the diamonds in the rough and continually churn the rosters building on Rookie contracts.

Jethro Jone$ pays his stars because it attracts and generates revenue and loyalty from the fanbase.

It helps contribute to remaining “interesting and relative” which in his own words is the top priority. He can hype , promote and sell the hell out of it by staying center stage in the media as y’all have accurately described.

The inverse correlation between fan and media criticism/blame of Jerry Jones and his actual control of personnel decisions is one of the more fascinating phenomenon in professional sports. I can only assume it’s due to the increasing time since our last championship.

Jerry receives exponentially more blame now than he did in the late 90s and early 2000s, despite have significantly less day to day involvement in personnel decisions than he did back then. He’s also far more subdued in the media than he once was when he gets upset, hard as that may be for younger fans to believe. He used to literally get drunk and call up sports writers to give them hit info on coaches/players.

The bottomline is our dysfunctional ownership doesn’t want to win bad enough to get out of the way. Not even at age 80.

This has always been about him seeking out his ambitions and dreams of being a football celebrity without the direct accountability that comes with coaching.

He set the brilliant and remarkable revenue streams in motion so that any lack of success on the field wouldn’t force him to change his ways .

We saw early on in his era that winning championships wasn’t enough if he wasn’t the face of the franchise and center of attention.
