If you can't figure out a -4.5 is much worse than a +2.3 then I'd have a gripe against the folks that taught you in school.

If you want more detail... then don't be a cheapskate and subscribe to their stats package.

If you can't figure out that it's impossible to compare our OL to the rest of the NFL without the scoring explanation then maybe you didn't even go to school or pay attention.

As long as you're a happy camper Amber... Then I'll sleep well tonight. :)

I put no stock in numbers I don't understand.

Life is easier that way.

I could tell pretty clearly that Bernadeau stunk, Leary had a rough moment or two, Frederick was terrific, and Free and Smith were more than good enough.

Can't wait to add Waters to the mix.

Someone told me PFF rated Carson Palmer higher than Peyton Manning Week 1. If thats true they should be paying people 26.99 to read their nonsense. Can anyone confirm that?

It depends on which PFF QB rankings you're referring too... I'm looking at the PFF QB ratings and Peyton is rated ahead of Palmer.

I feel the same way. All of them, some more than others, had lapses in their game but as a unit they were solid. That's all I care about.

free? I thougt frederick played great. Free played good also. Just that one play made him look terrible lol. But Murray didn't help with the half attempt of a block though. His man is the one who hurt Romo.

But even on that play Romo held the ball too long.

From Profootballfocus.com (you can subscribe yourself for $26.99)

Smith +0.3
Leary -2.0
Frederick -0.5
Bernadau -4.5
Free +2.3

No surprises to me... I thought Free played a heck of a game.

thanx for posting Mike and the free math lesson ( i will make sure to bookmark it)

just so i have it straight though.....

this week PFF grades actually mean something (since they gave our OL a good grade)?

PFF is garbage. Their idea on penalties is that all are equal no matter what it was or when it happened.

OK, here's some info...

3) How Do We Grade?
Each grade given is between +2 and -2, with 0.5 increments and an average of 0. A positive intervention in the game rates a positive grading and vice-versa. Very (very) few performances draw a +/-2 rating. In fact, the distribution of non-zero grades is like this:
.
+2.00.01percent
+1.50.3percent
+1.016percent
+0.537percent (unbalanced because of the way WRs and HBs are rated)
-0.524percent
-1.022percent
-1.50.5percent
-2.00.01percent
.
The grading takes into account many things and effectively brings “intelligence” to raw statistics.
.
For example, a raw stat might tell you a tackle conceded a sack. However, how long did he protect the QB for before he gave it up? Additionally, when did he give it up? If it was within the last two minutes on a potentially game-tying drive, it may be rather more important than when his team is running out the clock in a 30-point blowout.
.
The average grade, or what we would typically expect of the average player, is therefore defined as zero. In reality, the vast majority of grades on each individual play are zero and what we are grading are the exceptions to this.
.
A seal block on the backside of a play, for example, is something that it is reasonable to expect to be completed successfully. Consequently, it receives a zero grade, whereas the differentiation between a good and poor block is a heavy downgrade for a failed seal block to the backside of a running play.

I may be missing something in the explanation, but it sounds like they're saying that any score above +2.0 or below -2.0 is extremely rare, well below .01%. Given that Berny was scored at -4.5 for the game, by my scientific calculations, a performance that bad should only happen once every 14.7 million years. Thank goodness we got Waters.

And I'd agree on Smith playing better than his score indicated. Toe two penalties and the late sack he gave up (at least ii think one of th sacks was on him). Drove his score down.

And I do appreciate this info from PFF being posted. More grist for the mill, and we're all adults and can decide what info we choose to discount or take with the proper grain of salt.

That's a good question...

I look at the grades in comparison to others at the same position within the NFL in order to get a better handle on "What does this grade actually mean"?

Based on the grades for one week...

Free is the 14th ranked OT (out of 65)
Smith is the 25th ranked OT (out of 65)
Leary is the 43rd ranked G (out of 64)
Bern is 58th (out of 64)
And Travis was the 15th ranked Center (out of 32)

Umm, I'm in no mood for math at the moment, but if Free had over a +2 rating and they say that anything above a +2 falls into the rare of rares (.01%). Then how in the heck is he only the 14th ranked OT? Did this weekend mark the occurrence of 14, potentially once in a life time type performances from offensive tackles? Or, more than likely, PFF is nonsense...reconfirmed!

This was a banner week for OTs
In other news, Jerry gave Free a multi- year extension once these rankings were released

That +2/-2 stuff is PER PLAY.

The final game grade can (and is many times) greater than +2.0 or less than -2.0
