Murray offered 4yr/16mi

Murray may be carrying the bacon, but he isn't going to do this behind most other OLs. I think the offer will go up, but I don't have an issue with it. He won't have this success elsewhere and should want to stay here above all. $4 million per year is nothing to sneeze at. It's 16 times more than Roger Staubach ever made here for a season and look what he turned his salary into.

This, and in addition it's a start, shows interest being that it's mid-season and gives each side time to think and talk about it. It also allows Dallas some insight into his / his agents thinking so that they can begin to wrap their collective heads around everyone else they want to sign.

Just further evidence how bad the players got screwed on the new agreement. How the uppers in the Players Union got paid off is a crying shame.

Its called the art of negotiation. Jerry made an offer and he wants to see what his agent thinks and how far they are apart.

I'm all for signing Murray. I think he's a special back that makes things happen. I don't think plugging in anyone will be as effective as Murray. However, if Murray doesn't sign I like this as option B. Peterson running behind this oline would be a huge deal. But anything can happen now and AP might end up behind bars. Nonetheless, it's a good plan.

Forgive my cynicism, but I have a hard time believing most wealthy people are going to end up behind bars any more. They can afford attorneys who seem to create the reasonable doubt too easily.

The Players got hosed by the Owners crying poor and they artificially kept the cap low for a couple seasons, but they new TV money is insane and the faucet is about to be turned on again. The new Direct TV deal increased by 50%, CBS joined the Thurs Night package and the regular Fox and CBS Sunday deals are through the roof. The cap will rise and quickly.

Certain positions get the big bucks- QB, WR, CB, LT and certain ones are greatly depressed- RB being the main one. I know it only takes one team to overpay, but most teams are going away from putting all their eggs in one RB basket. The risks are too high. Murray would be wise to take a 4 year deal from Dallas that he can expect to fulfill and see every penny.

A four-year commitment is radically different from a one-year commitment. Teams have to (and are willing to) pay a premium for a shorter contract. The player's getting less security, while the team reduces its future cap commitment.

For a player where you have low confidence that their value will hold over several years (in Murray's case, because of his injury history and because of the position he plays), you may be willing to pay a lot more on a one-year deal than you would annually on a long-term deal. The beauty of the franchise tag is that it locks up zero dollars of your cap in 2016 and beyond.

The ugliness of the franchise tag is that you would be paying him $9.5 million... based on "old" contracts that were signed before teams came to their senses.

I think the chances of the Cowboys applying the franchise tag to Murray are slim to none.

There is no way the Cowboys would pay the 9.5m to tag Murray. If they wanted to guarantee Murray 10m they would make it a Signing bonus on a 4-5 deal and keep under contract for a few more years instead of just one.

Yeah that would be the smart thing to do, the contracts for backs are too inflated to franchise him it would actually be more cost efficient to just get the guy signed and pay him a decent contract.

4 / $16 is a good starting offer, I have no problem with it and frankly don't see how it is disrespecting Murray. Apparently a lot of guys on here have never taken part in negotiations before, you start low, you get a counter offer, you then readjust your offer, a counter offer is readjusted and so forth and so on.

These things take time, I have been part of negotiations that have taken over a month to finalize so the idea that you wrap this up in an hour or two is frankly ridiculous.

I am sure we will go a little bit higher, maybe a little more guaranteed money as this thing progresses. The risk is all on Murray folks, if he tears an ACL this week then all bets are off. The pressure will also be on Murray to keep up this level of production if he wants a mega contract. A couple of games of 40 or 50 yards and all of a sudden that price tag starts dropping.

If Murray just flat refuses any offer below $7 or $8 a year and will not budge..............you give him the rock 30+ times a game and see what condition he is in come week 16 after 400 carries............if he is still standing, you wish him luck in free agency.

I don't understand this, you have a guy who's carrying the bacon and you low ball him in the middle of the season...go figure.

That's the Jerry "I almost blew back to back superbowls but I sure didn't give us a chance for a three-peat" Jones way of mucking things up!

4yrs/$25mill is the MOST i'd offer him. That's a little over 6 mil a year, not bad at all. I ultimately think he ends up here next season and beyond one way or another.

The good news: Sooner or later we'll win one despite Jerry.

No I didn't but I looked up some of the top backs from the past decade and one thing that makes me think Murray is worth taking into a second contract is he doesn't have anywhere near as many carries as a bunch of those guys had at his age. Steven Jackson, Frank Gore, AP, LT, Jamal Lewis, Marshawn Lynch to name a few all had around 1000 or more carries by 25 Murray is at around 600 I think, so yeah four more seasons I'd bank on four more seasons with Murray as a thousand yard back.

He didn't get those carries because he was always getting hurt. That should not be looked at as a positive.

We should just wait on Murray. There might be McCoy next year. Waiting is our best bet in this situation IMO.

Also in the first season he wasn't the starter going into that year, he had two fluke injuries and then played 14 games last year. In a way that is a positive because it means less mileage on him that would have been wasted behind a lesser O-line. Now better blocking in place and he only has around 600 career carries.

That was in the 70's this is not the 70's. That is a slap in the face offer no agent in his right mind would advise Murray to take it.
