I mean that is the rule. The ball is down where he starts the "baseball" slide. Now I haven't seen a non-QB go down like that before.

Me either. I wonder if the slide rule only applies to QB's.

RULE 7 Ball in Play, Dead Ball, Scrimmage

Section 1 Ball in Play

Article 1: Live Ball. After the ball has been declared ready for play, it becomes a live ball when it is legally snapped or legally kicked (a free kick or fair catch kick). The ball remains dead if it is snapped or kicked before it is made ready for play.

Section 2 Dead BallArticle 1: Dead Ball Declared. An official shall declare the ball dead and the down ended:

  1. (a) when a runner is contacted by a defensive player and touches the ground with any part of his body other than his hands or feet. The ball is dead the instant the runner touches the ground. A runner touching the ground with his hands or feet while in the grasp of an opponent may continue to advance; or
  2. (b) when a runner is held or otherwise restrained so that his forward progress ends; or
  3. (c) when a quarterback immediately drops to his knee (or simulates dropping to his knee) behind the line of scrimmage; or
  4. (d) when a runner declares himself down by sliding feet first on the ground. The ball is dead the instant the runner touches the ground with anything other than his hands or his feet; or
Note: Defenders are required to treat a sliding runner as they would a runner who is down by contact.

  1. (1) A defender must pull up when a runner begins a feet-first slide. This does not mean that all contact by a defender is illegal. If a defender has already committed himself, and the contact is unavoidable, it is not a foul unless the defender commits some other act, such as helmet-to-helmet contact or by drivinghisforearmorshoulderintotheheadorneck areaoftherunner.
  2. (2) A runner who desires to take advantage of this protection is responsible for starting his slide before contact by a defensive player is imminent; if he does not, and waits until the last moment to begin his slide, he puts himself in jeopardy of being contacted.

Seems like it applies to any ball carrier

Wow. Imagine if the play was challenged. Murray would have looked even worse.

That would have awesome because it looks like by the letter of the law the ball should have been placed at or around the LOS

To me, it looked like he was trying to eat clock by staying in bounds. Yes, it was the first quarter, but they already had a 14-point lead and Murray may have just been thinking that every second he can take off the clock counts. It's a stretch...but so is questioning Murray's toughness.

As far as an Eagles player coming out ANONYMOUSLY and saying this? Strong stuff, Eagles player. Way to show conviction. LOL.

Wow - love the drama.

Lane Johnson says Eagle fans are not a home field advantage because if they don't get a first down, they boo.

DeMarco Murray did not speak to the media today

Fletcher Cox says he is going to smile, whether they win or lose - people outside the game don't understand.

This is great. Too bad we are not 7-3 right now.

And the best part is, by saying this anonymously, Murray is going to be looking around that locker room and everyone is going to look guilty. This "Eagles' player" has done nothing but upset the chemistry inside that locker room even more.

I've never been a Murray fan, although he did run the zone read well. Something about his demeanor or attitude comes off really weird and kind of fake. Also trying to read between the lines it seems like there has definitely been a bit of a failing out between Murray and Witten, Tony, etc.. I think Murray is just showing his true colors a bit. He has always been about himself and seems a bit sensitive, not too intelligent and a bit of a crybaby. Even when he was on the Cowboys he would whine and complain about the run game at times. I think he is not a fan of Chip's system or the hurry up attack because it's not what he thinks is best for him. The only time he does well is when he thinks is trying to prove something to someone. He thought he would be living the high life as a Cowboy and now he's just another football player on another team. It's only a matter of time before he only gives what he has to keep his paycheck because he is doesn't feel special or respected.

Former Eagles linebacker Seth Joyner weighed in Tuesday morning. Joyner was more than a little surprised when he saw DeMarco Murray slide instead of turning the corner in the Eagles' loss to Miami two Sundays ago.

"No, it doesn't happen," Joyner said on Comcast SportsNet's Breakfast on Broad. "Unless you're at the end of the half or the end of the game and you're trying to run the clock out, that is uncalled for, OK? The first thing that came to my mind was, 'You freakin' coward.' That's the first thing that came to my mind. You coward. How do you lay down? I can understand if it was a defensive lineman. You want to try to preserve yourself. But you've got defensive backs over there on that sideline. He laid down."
