I do not see what is so tough about it, unless they are balking paying that kind of money to a reserve.

Agreed, they have 18m in cap space and this deal would only add about 1.3m to it so it really isn't that hard. Maybe setting a precedent for backups they don't want.

Who knows what guarantees are in there that would make it a poison pill contract?

They tendered him at original compensation - clearly there was a limit for what they were willing to pay to retain him. $1.67M may have been their limit.

Some more tidbits re: Mayowa:

But as Jones was discussing the merits of Mayowa, who has just two career sacks, Raiders owner Mark Davis walked by.

Jones: “Is he the next DeMarcus Ware? Probably not.”

Jones: “Is he the next Charles Haley? Probably not.”

A voice then rose up in the distance: “He’s better,” Davis said with a laugh.

“Oh, Mark,” Jones said while laughing.

Davis declined to comment on whether Raiders were going to match the offer sheet.

Jones said he had no clue what the Raiders were going to do. All he is knows is that they have the offer sheet and Mayowa is a player they identified as one who could help them.

“We are looking for players who have value and are efficient for us,” Jones said. “I don’t know how the Raiders view it. But we are looking at guys we can get value out of. That is what we did with Benson. We like him as a player and we think he can fit in our defensive scheme.”

Jones said they view Mayowa as a right end and someone who can help make up for the loss of Randy Gregory, who is suspended for the first four games of next season.

The Cowboys haven’t rule out moving DeMarcus Lawrence back from the left side to the right side either.

Lawrence played right end as a rookie before moving to the left side last year when the Cowboys drafted Gregory and signed Greg Hardy in free agency. But with Gregory’s situation and Hardy not expected back, Lawrence could go back to the right side.

“We want to play our best players,” Jones said. “Last year, we thought Gregory and Hardy were best fits for the right end and DeMarcus was better for left end. Things change. We haven’t ruled out DeMarcus Lawrence on the right side.”

They must be consulting with their spiritual advisors, statistical analysts, probability experts, and sooth-sayers. That takes time.

Oh, I forgot Magic 8-Ball....

I think that's the answer. Every team lives within a budget and I don't think spending this much on Mayowa was part of the Raiders' budget. They can do it, but might believe the money is better spent elsewhere.

Ultimately, though, I think they'll match it because they can.

They already have him down for a 1.6m hit with the tender, so this deal would only add 200k this year

This years cap doesn't mean much, they have to look at what their cap looks like in the next two seasons. They have a lot of big ticket free agents added.

I don't think the cap hit, especially for this year, is their concern. It's the amount of the contract for a player who won't start for them, barring injury. Mayowa has a chance to start for us, especially during Gregory's suspension if we don't draft a right end in the first few rounds. And given how much we rotate linemen, he'll probably play more snaps for us than he would for them. They certainly could match, because the contract isn't that large, it's just a question of the value they'd get out of him. We'd probably get more value for the money than they would.

Right on....I guess DAL looks at it as a 2yr/6m deal......that is a lot to match for a back-up

They could've tendered him at 2.5m if they really wanted him....no way DAL gives a 2nd...

Last year the running game was the least of our opponents worries. When the opponent is two TD's ahead late in the game then you can run. Their D-line has their ears pinned back for the passing game.

When trailing McFadden averaged 5 yards a carry. When leading, he averaged 3.8.

In 2014 Murray averaged 4.6 leading and 5.2 trailing.

How often was Dallas leading without Romo? There is an ENORMOUS difference between Romo under center and Matt Cassel.

Weird how the Murray lovers make up excuses for his putrid work in Philly, but ignore the fact McFadden didn't have the benefit of Romo or Bryant for most of the season.

Oakland won't pay to fix the dadgum plumbing in their locker rooms.

This is a tough decision.

I hope the Raiders wait to the last minute to make a decision.

I want to see 50 pages.

Looking at the thread size alone you'd think that they were signing the next Reggie White...

You can tell it's the offseason when you realize it's about a 240lb reserve DE who has collected 2 sacks in 3 seasons!
