Add to that if he is healthy week 14 or 15 he wouldnt have played football in over a year.

If this comes to pass it boosts our 2017 chances way more then our 2016

That is completely fair but as DLaw demonstrated, even a handful of games can help development a lot. I'm not counting on him being a game changer but I do want to get the development ball rolling.

I just want to know one thing. Will he better than Gachkar?

So like when the nerve fires up......he's immediately healthy and ready to play? This is the most bizarre injury i've seen to date. I have no idea what's going on lol. One minute you're thinking maybe the thing never fires up....the next you think maybe next season he'll be ready.......then you hear week 14?

It's not uncommon that when a nerve reinnervates that it comes on like a light switch. Reading the tea leaves you can get the implication that is indeed what has happened. even so the peroneal muscle that lifts the foot likely atrophied and would need rehab.

I am reluctant to eat the cheese without explicit information myself. He is not eligible to even return to practice until after the bye and no decision has to be made at all for two weeks following that. Makes for interesting speculation though.

I am not an expert, but I've had a little personal experience with nerves turning off and back on. And in my experience, its not all or nothing. Its gradual. This idea of a lightswitch is exactly the opposite of mine and others' experiences that I know.

It just doesnt seem possible to me.

Well that's what I was thinking too. As with any injury. It takes time to fully heal and there's steps to healing. Its hard to believe about a injury or a nerve in this case just firing and the next day being good.

I think a lot of people just think that once the nerve fires, it's game on. I had a pinched nerve in my neck for 9 months while I fought with workman's comp (hurt it in an attic fire). Turn my head to the right and my left arm would go numb.

I finally was able to get the surgery done to fuse C4 and C5 and good as new, except nothing had changed. The first month after surgery I was really depressed, absolutely no progress. I wrongly assumed after a few weeks I would start seeing improvement but it wasn't like that. There was never any day to day progress or even week to week, but after a couple of months looking back I could see that I had made some progress. It seemed like more of a month to month thing for the nerve to heal after being pinched for so long. It took about 8 months for the numbness to go totally away.

My point being is I don't think he woke up one day and the nerve was firing. I think it has been so gradual that you can't even describe your progress. Listening to him and a couple of reports I think he has made progress and it has been enough time for him to look back and clearly see he is progressing. It's frustrating really because everybody that sees you wants to know how you are progressing and you really can't see it on a day to day basis.

I know we had different injuries but nerves don't respond the same way other body parts do. Everything I have heard really sounds encouraging and I think people inside the organization believe he will play this year, but it's not going to be a foregone conclusion. I do believe the nerve is firing to an extent.

That's interesting, thanks for sharing. Gives a little insight on how the nerve sometimes fires.

And like I've said before, the cowboys won't announce that the nerve has fired up or gotten to the point that the drop foot had ceased... there's no reason to. Nothing to gain, especially if there are complications later in recovery. The only way we'll find out he's improving/recovered is when someone like Spagnola will notice Smith training by himself during practice (not rehab). That'll be a sign he's close to practising with his teammates.

So he may have already been ahead of schedule, we just won't know about it because there's no reason for us to know, from the teams point of view

I meant nerve function, not a return to full strength. IE one day you cannot move it all and the next you can. The muscle fibers atrophy without nerve connection and need to be rehabbed.

I am going to go with this. I suffer from CBT (cubital tunnel syndrome), a bad flair up and my ring an pinky finger have little to no sensation for 24-48 hours, minor one is it take a few hours for the nerve to start firing and i get sensation back gradually through the day.

Well, I get the impression that sensations may be returning slowly. He seems to be working out to greatly reduce muscle atrophy and I imagine if hes doing "more" its because he is feeling "more".

The possibility of him and Gregory even appearing in a wild card game is unreal. Romo/Dak, Dez, Zeke, Jaylon, Gregory, DLaw......Oh. My. God.

Bah I meant muscle function. He has straight out said that he has new sensations every day from the time he was drafted. It's about him being able to flex the peroneal muscle with the nerve that I am speaking about.

IE one day he cannot lift the foot and the next he can.

Smith and Gregory coming back?

Oh maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan they could be HUGE for a nice lil playoff run. Get a few weeks of regular season play in, and tune up for the playoffs.

While it does sound enticing, what really, has Gregory shown so far? I really don't recall anything that makes me think he is anything more than dazed and confused.

Sure there is a reason he is injured just as they placed Collins on IR. I don't know if Smith will make it back or not but the Cowboys from the get go has said they feel there is a chance he can play this season if not they could place him IR and open a roster spot in doing so. Of course that would end any hope of his return this season.
The fundamental difference is Collins was taking up a 53 man spot, of which is already 3 spots down at the time due to Dez, Romo and Scandrick having multiple week injuries, and Smith doesn't. He's going to remain on the NFI until he has to be put on the 53 or put on IR. There's no reason to do anything else at this point.

He is on the NFI list, I think he has to begin practicing by november 7th and has to be on the 53 by nov 28th or he would have to be shelved. We will know soon enough.

I believe its the 1st day after the 11th week of the season when that decision HAS to be made. After the 6th week is when he would be eligible to return to practice, but he has until the day after the 11th week before he has to return to practice. At that point he has another 3 weeks if he's practicing(not sure what degree of practice is acceptable), or until the day after the 14th week, to either be placed on IR or put on the active roster. From what I understand, if he's not capable of practicing after the 11th week he will have to be placed on IR. Even if they do skirt the rules and hold out until after the 14th week, he will either have to be put on the 53 or IR. Basically they could probably stretch this out all the way until week 15 before we know for sure he's done for the year or capable of playing. So up to 2 more months of wheres Jaylon threads for this season.

Even if he's healthy, he's still a rookie playing his first few games. He's not going to come in and be an all pro.
lol yeah people are seeing him as a instant star all pro legendary LB, and maybe he will be , but I doubt it this year.

Why not? Zeke probably will. Dak has that much ability. Why not Smith too?
