All roads lead to Gallup - the WR study

It's not a secret that Dallas is remaking the WR group, and this off-season was just the first step in that shuffle.

Here are some observations as we break down the position for this season and moving forward:

1. Gallup will get every and any opportunity to be a big piece of the puzzle.
2. So will Noah Brown.
3. Every other WR on the roster is playing for a job in 2019.
4. All things being equal, Wilson could get many opportunities, too.

Now, these observations aren't exactly earth-shattering, but let's dig into the logic:

Williams isn't going anywhere this season because releasing him creates more dead money that it's worth to just keep him. And he's shown that he can be a useful WR in this league, even if he hasn't earned his salary. Next season we can save 2.5M by releasing him, so if he's not a clear-cut starter by next season, he's gone. But he may just hang on to his roster spot for another season for reasons that I'm about to get into.

Hurns is essentially on a one-year prove-it deal. Unless he's our best receiver - or at least one of the obvious starters - he can be cut next season and save us $5M, with only $1M in dead money.

Beasley, Austin and Thompson only have one year left on their deals. So they are basically rentals right now (maybe rent-to-own if we decide down the line, but that's TBD).

That leaves Noah Brown and the two draft picks, Gallup and Wilson, (Lenoir is a wildcard).

So don't be surprised that if it's at all close in training camp, if we see more Brown and Gallup than even Hurns. I don't necessarily expect that to happen, but Brown, Gallup and Wilson have a much bigger chance of being a part of the long-term WR solution than Hurns does. Just by the simple economics of it.

That brings us back to Williams. It wouldn't shock me if going into 2019 we end up keeping Williams. I expect him and Hurns to be essentially competing with each other for a job, this year and next. Personally, I think Hurns might be the better receiver, but I'm not 100% certain of that, either. But with the squad likely turning over the position more next off-season, Williams could be a veteran that sticks. That's kind of a scary proposition for a guy who doesn't like to catch with his hands and is dumb enough to get drunk and wreck his Lambo, then blame it on a former college teammate.

But we probably shouldn't get too attached to Hurns, Austin and Thompson. And even Beasley is going to have to bounce back in a big way this season to have any chance of getting another contract.

They will eat the money on T-Will if he don’t play better than 5 other WR in camp. They are gonna be sick of his crap. Bad enough he had foot surgery but the DUI will result in a suspension anyways. Probly 2 games.

I am just glad we are now removed from the stale Dez/Witten combo. I made a thread about that yesterday. This offense desperately needed a makeover. I don't think Dak would have progressed with that current WR core. I didn't agree with getting rid of Switzer though. We didn't even give him a chance. He could have grown in this current offensive approach. But with Dez and Witten, many WRs don't get a legit chance. I am glad we don't have a "#1" receiver Dak has to worry about pleasing. Everyone is on equal ground. Dak works best that way. He has even said that. This is the type of offense I have wanted for awhile now.

Did he end up getting a DWI? I haven't kept up with that case since a few days after it happened. I know he had a chance of getting a DWI once the video was released that kind of disproved his initial story.

Pretty sure they arrested him for it. And you know goodell won’t let that slide. Lol

I'm not saying that's impossible, because you could be right and I don't have any insight otherwise. I don't think it's likely, based on the logic. It takes more than that for Jerry to get sick of someone's crap.

Like the enthusiasm, but a little overzealous. Gallup I agree on. But Hurns will be the guy here at least for this year as long as he is healthy. And Beasley isnt going anywhere. He is Daks security blanket. The rest of the guys will be fighting for playing time. Wilson I do find intriguing and Noah has some skills.

Williams I could care less if they cut him tomorrow, but I concede salary wise you might as well keep him on the bench in case of injury.

I just mean that he don’t have the talent to put up with it. Although you could be right after letting Dez go and having a big unknown at the WR position.

This is a blessing in disguise honestly. I think I read where if he gets suspended, this guaranteed money can be voided. That would be our out. TWill is worthless and does nothing the other WRs we have can't do. He adds no real value. I didn't like us extending him in the first place. There's a TWill on every single team.

If I were making the decisions, I'd probably agree with you about the talent:crap ratio. I wouldn't put up with it either. But I don't get to make that call.

Jerry will put up with you if he likes you or you produce. Zeke has a huge leash because how valuable he is. TWill has no real value. If someone is not producing and they have off the field issues, I don't think they have a problem getting rid of him.

I am not sure how much they like Twill. We will see.

I read the same thing about the guaranteed money but don’t know how sure they were about it. He certainly is carrying on like there is no clause and he collects the money regardless. Strange time to do this considering he has never been in trouble before and Dez is gone and he was set to be the man.

He'll put up with you if he thinks you could somehow eventually produce. See: Gregory. It does depend on how much they like him. But it literally costs them nothing extra to see if he will produce.

I actually like what we are doing on certain positions. Overloading WR and DE. If or when Gregory is reinstated then it’s a log jam of potential talent at DE. Battle it out in TC and preseason.

The gladiators must fight to please me. Lol.

I agree. They are actually building the roster similarly to how I would if it were my job. Yes, we'd all like to have a stud 1-tech and FS, but those guys aren't always easy to come by and they certainly aren't the highest priority.

In all fairness, we saw what happened up close when he was the man and Dez went down in 2015. He was HORRIBLE
