Tinkley Square, brutes and good lads.
The names of the legendary Cowboys Stautner, Brandt and Schramm will generate fond memories of a time when the 3 exemplified the term brain trust.

Yes, govnors, Landry whipped them into shape.
But Brandt, Stautner and Schramm devised the plan, went after players (with acquiescence from Landry) and shaped the startup Cowboys into a worldwide enterprise representing the new, lucrative and sexy
NFL.
Today, I was reading as a daily routine to improve me self, and came across an article in SportsDay about Lilly recalling any Stautner didn't want the Cowboys to wear gloves in the Ice Bowl.
Why?
Because Stautner thought it made the defenders look like "sissies."
Lilly, heartbreakingly tells of wearing no gloves (though photos show gloves on Cowboys) wrapping Seran Wrap on feet. Bandages around ears under the helmets. 2 measly heaters at each end of the bench. Capes with no zippers. Ruffians, for 2 1/2 hours, it was Valley Forge conditiins. (I have a lips)

Well, that is my Stautner story.
These were 3 truly great Cowboys in their times.

What is your favorite Stautner, Schramm or Brandt story, bad boys of the realm?

I miss those days.
my favorite Tex Schramm story comes from his time with the Rams.
he created a phony all-star team for small colleges....sent the ballotts to coaches and used the info to determine who the best players were.
The man was a true genius.
I highly recommend the book Tex by Bob St John.

several times growing up I corresponded with Mr.Schramm...helluva nice guy.
also wrote Coach Stautner and got a really nice reply.

damn I miss those days.

You should Google Ernie Stautner; he was legendary before the Cowboys were born.

While I agree on the greatness of all of them, I have always been unable to understand how they let the team get in the shape it was in at the end of their era.

Well, good lad, me post clearly said "in their times."
The deterioration began with a stagnated Landry. It spread down.

Yes, Geno, as are the names Dorsett, Landry, Staubach, Meredith, Deion, Garrett, Schramm, Aikman etc.

Stautner was a tough dude. There's a story about his playing days, he's on the sideline and asks one of his teammates to get him some tape from the trainer. The guy asks why and Ernie shows his finger, he had a compound fracture and the bone was sticking out of the skin. Ernie didn't want to show the trainer, because he was afraid he would get pulled from the game. The teammate got him the tape and Ernie taped it all up and went back in and played the rest of the game. That's tough! :omg:

When you have a coach like that, there ain't no excuses. What is a player going to say, hey Coach Stautner, think I sprained my ankle, don't know if I can play. Stautner would probably say, unless you lost a foot, you better get your rump back in there and if you did lose a foot, we'll rub some dirt on it and tape it up and put a shoe on that stump.

Two things led to the Boys deterioration in the 80's.

Arrogance and Bum Bright.

Arrogance in that they were so in love with being the Computer Wizes that they thought numbers were everything. The biggest point in that was they passed up drafting Mike Singletary because he was ONE HALF INCH below their 'minimum' as regards height for LBs.

Bum Bright in that he starved the organization to pay his own debts. He gutted the scouting budget and cut Landry's budget for supporting coaches so by the late 80's he was unable to get really good assistant coaches anymore

My favorite is Tom didn’t want the America’s Team label. Thought it would be a target on our backs and chalkboard motive for opposing teams creating a negative rhetoric throughout the league with players and teams. I’d ad fans too.

Tex won of course because Tex was as big of pimp as Jerry is. But Tom was right and the label has been a burden ever since.

I think you are a little confused. Tex Schramm was president of the Cowboys, Gil Brandt was head of the scouting department and Ernie Stautner was defensive coordinator. They were all very good at what they did but my guess is only Schramm and Brandt had regular conversations and if Schramm was going to make any player acquisition I'm sure he had a conversation with Landry first before doing it.

Did I misname, misuse facts or titles? Well, you should know.
By the way, STAUTNER WAS TRUSTED AND IN THE INNER CIRCLE.

Do you know how it all started? Back in the 60's NFL films started doing a highlight film every year for each team and they named each one. Well in 70 or 71 when they did the Cowboys highlight reel they named it America's Team. Well a L.A. sportswriter hears this and wrote an article about it and Howard Cosell who at the time besides doing MNF had a 5 minute radio show twice a day in the morning and afternoon called Howard Cosell speaking of sports and after reading that article he mentioned it on his radio show. A couple weeks later the Cowboys were on MNF and Cosell agin brought it up and called the Cowboys America's Team a few times during the game and from then on the Cowboys were known as America's Team.
