FRISCO - Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle David Irving has missed "multiple'' mandatory drug tests in the last two months, sources tell me, putting in jeopardy not only any chance he has of participating with this team during the NFL Playoffs but also his chance of playing in the league anytime soon.

Irving's off-field life continues to be plagued by legal turmoil largely related to conflict with his ex-girlfriend, with whom he shares a young daughter. And his on-field efforts have been marred in part by a high ankle sprain he sustained in practice on Nov. 2. But since incurring that injury, Irving has rarely shown up for work here inside The Star -- not only missing participation in practices, but also declining to attend practice as an observer, declining to attend meetings or watch film, and declining to accept rehab help with the ankle and encouragement to stay active in the weight room.

"He's just sort of checked out,'' one person close to the situation tells me.

Very sad

Again, anyone who thought this was an injury thing were not paying attention.

This guy is off the reservation and, by the way, nothing like the Gregory situation.

All that talent..

Sidelined.

Get better starting now and get back here next year.

Can you imagine this dline with him on it?

I the cat doesn't want to play - I don't want him playing. It's a damn hard game when you have drive, desire and effort. It's impossible when you don't.

Kid's gonna find his "personal problems" will be much worse when he's making $40K a year.

Isn't he still on the roster? If he missed multiple drug tests, wouldn't they count as failures? So, why isn't he suspended? Is he appealing the suspension? The NFL can't keep any secrets about suspensions and failed tests. Why waste a roster spot on a player who cannot play this year?

None of this makes any sense to me. Then again, nothing ever made any sense when it comes to Irving.

Honestly, no.

I can not rap my mind around any version of this where Irvin is playing for the Cowboys again.

Hopefully he cleans up his life. I think this team tried, but you have to help yourself before others can.

He won't be part of the team next year.

This is pretty much Rolando McClain all over again. Not necessarily saying the details are the same but clearly he does not prioritize football. It's too bad because the guys has lots of talent.

The window is probably still open IF he can stay clean during the offseason. I don't see it with the Cowboys but I think some teams will give him another chance.

Again, that's why they only 2nd round tendered him this past offseason.

They were hoping someone would get dumb and hand them a 2nd round pick.

I believe that that is because the team was offered a second round pick for him the year before. I don't recall exactly, it's been a few years now (and that's sad right?), but yes, as I recall the Cowboys had a chance to move him but elected not to, at the time.

Anyone have any more excuses left to make for David Irving?
