I'm curious how many first round draft picks the Pats have on their o-line. From what I've read on this board that's the only way to build a great one.

Firsts or not their lines have more often than ( Denver) protected Brady

Would this be the same defense that got worked by that same elite RB, not to mention his chubby sidekick?

I'm fine with paying elite defensive players as such, but wary of paying good ones as though they are elite.
the cowboys have some good defensive players maybe on elite and I am not sure about him

Shed Elliott, Cooper and Beasely and we'll be well on our way...

If that dosen't work, we can always blame Garrett.

I think Zeke is still special. I agree with you but the Garrett formula of giving Zeke 500 touches a year is just ridiculous
I agree with you. We need a very good quick cat to spell Zeke who has some wiggle and speed. Smith needs to be the fb he was at The Ohio State.

An elite RB is not needed to win a SB.

An elite RB IS needed for this Dallas Cowboys offensive scheme. There in lies the problem and an offensive philosophy change is needed. This team can't operate without that stud runner.

....and the team that has a new RB for every Super Bowl they get to gets their sixth trophy since 2000.

You either have a great QB that can put up a ton of points or you have a great defense to keep you in a game. It is not about the skill players, it's about the most valuable position and the trenches.

Stop handing out big contracts to highlight reel players that won't lead you to the ultimate goal. Slap Zeke with a couple franchise tags, hope and pray that Cooper takes some "Thank you for believing in me!" discount, and pay our freakin' defensive players.

I agree with you about not necessarily needing an "elite" rb, but we have one and I cant see just walking away from him. Now if there was a deal on the table and we could sign a Kareem Hunt or someone for a more cost effective contract I think I could get behind that. It sucks we are gonna have to pay Zeke but he is an absolute stud and we played the anybody can run behind our oline game a few years back. DMC was alright but the difference with Zeke was night and day.

There is certainly a very strong argument that can be made to not pay RB's.

The Cowboys need to be very careful about Zeke's deal.

No.

We are a running team.
That's part of the problem.

The team must not be a running team. You need to be able to run AND throw, depending on the weaknesses of the defense you are facing.

Maybe week 1 you run it 40 times. Then in weak 2 you throw it 40 times. It's about attacking the weaknesses of the defense you are facing that week. THat's what the Patriots do to perfection. And that's why they win.

Pounding Zeke 30 times against a strong run defense is a waste. You need a multi dimensional offense to win in the NFL.

You lose out on paying good defensive players when you're handing out gigantic contracts to skill positions. You get, combined, Zeke and Cooper could possibly have 30+ million a year from our cap?

And you bringing up holes in our D is adding to my point that we need the cap space. Really great we gave away our first round pick for a freakin' WR instead of fixing the middle of our defensive line, which has been a problem for over a decade.

But old man Marinelli doesn't value defensive tackles.

Agreed.

This is what needs to change.

Not using said elite RB is kind of an issue though.

Rams punter Johnny Hekker had just two fewer touches (9) than Todd Gurley (11).

I understand what you're saying and time after time, people use the patriots as an example of what you can and should do. I can't follow that model until you give me Brady and Belichick, You are talking about two of the greatest of all time in many respects. These two can do anything and yes, they can be beat by teams who don't have the equivalent.

And the other elite RB won the title. Sony Michell.

Yes, the QB is by far the most important, no one is arguing that. However, the route running ability of Edelmann and Gronk was absolutely huge in this game.

Playmakers are important, just not in the way most fans believe. Moving the chains is the #1 facet of most good/great O's.

I do agree about putting a major focus on the D, but until we understand the role of DT's in playoff D's, it won't matter. NE has what might be the best DL rotation in the NFL.

....an unhealthy Gurley was replaced by CJ freakin' Anderson and he produced as much as Gurley from week 15 to the divisional round LOL

Show me another position that you can replace this easily? Go ahead.
Not easily. CJ is a tough yards pounder and starting quality. His primary issue is that he hasn't been able to stay healthy consistently.

Gurley didn't do crap with 10 carries. He hasn't done anything for weeks. Yet, CJ Anderson, a dude out of football, came in at the end of the season and had a 4 game stretch of big time play and helped get them to the championship.

That's the point - you aren't replacing a great defensive player or QB this easily, now are you?
Philly did last year!!!!!
