One prominent coach will be fired … late

We rarely see coaches fired after the calendar turns to February. That’s what Black Monday is for. Even then, there are situations that arise which can lead to a move being made less than a few weeks until the start of free agency.

We’re going to boldly predict that happens this February.

It could come in the form of the Cowboys deciding to move on from Jason Garrett. He’s already on the hot seat and will apparently not be calling plays next season. We also know that Jerry Jones has flirted with the possibility of trading for Saints head coach Sean Payton. While that’s unlikely, it shows he’s not as sold on Garrett as he used to be. Jay Gruden (Commanders) and Doug Marrone (Jaguars) are others who could fall into the category of being surprise late-February ex-employees.

Why would the Saints even want to trade him? I don't understand any of this Payton talk.... Why is it again that he thinks Dallas is a better spot than New Orleans?

He has one more year on his deal after next year. Drew Brees is at the end of his career and Sean Payton owes the Saints nothing as he’s taken a perennial loser and gave them a SB after the cities worst tragedy.

Sean has deep ties to the Cowboys and has a great relationship with the Jones’s. He isn’t concerned with coexisting with JJ as everyone thinks the next HC would be. The Cowboys roster is not only one of he most talented and balanced ones in the league, but it’s also super young. Couple that with a personnel department that’s proven they can draft and you’ve got a squad teeming with the potential for long-term success.

The Cowboys also present the next coaching challenge for Payton. He’s proven what he’s needed to prove with NO and his HOF QB is on the way out. Payton’s legacy would be ridiculous if he went to the NFL’s biggest franchise and won it all. Think of all the storylines and folklore from another legit 3-4 year Cowboys SB contenders/winners.

Would Payton want to go through the process of finding a new franchise QB and starting again in NO or would he want to graduate to the next challenge? Would the Saints see the writing on the wall and get something for him or let him walk for free? That’s the question.

Of course he could chose to remain in NO and keep an already strong roster around until he finds a new QB. But this is the logical framework for his departure to Dallas.

P.S. Coaches around the league are a lot more fond of Dak and the offensive personnel he has surrounding him than CZ critics would think. Don’t use Dak as a reason Payton wouldn’t come here, that’s just not true.

What deep ties does he have that are any bigger than Belichick's deep ties with the Browns or Pete Carroll's deep ties with the Jets? People keep using vague terms like that because he worked there one time. I would bet money he has a better relationship today with the Saints ownership than with Jerry, who I'm sure is still friends with. Also, Sean isn't just the QB coach, he's built a complete team in NO. He has no reason to abandon that.

Hearing rumors from friends here in Louisiana that Payton is about to sign an extension with the Saints that pays what Carroll got in Seattle!

He started his coaching career here and is very good friends with the Jones family. It’s not really an opinion it’s a known thing around the league that there are strong ties there. Don’t just be a contrarian just because. Belicheck was fired from Cleveland and he has had a deep hatred for them ever since, Carroll had a brief stint in New York before going to college for years. Those aren’t deep ties to an organization.

Good rosters don’t mean squat without QB’s. NO’s doesn’t have the capital to go get one anytime soon. It could be years before Payton and the Saints find a QB. Life after a HOF QB is uncertain. It’s not implausible for Payton to be uninterested in retooling.

Also let’s not forget HC’s are competitive and want great legacies too. He’s gone above and beyond in NO and took a terrible franchise and made them one of the best in the league year in and year out. It’s not crazy to think (sources say this too) that Payton is ready for the next challenge and the ending of Brees career is a perfect segway. Going to the biggest brand in football and winning a ring would make Payton a bonafide all-timer.

I’m not saying it’s going to happen but it’s pretty simple to see that there is a legitimate chance Payton makes the move. Obviously the Saints have the upper hand, but there is a logical line of thinking here. Not just unfounded rumor.

Again, I’m not saying to book it that Payton is the next HC, but your friends in Louisiana sound like homers. There is no media outlet expressing any communication between the Saints and Payton about an extension, even local NO media hasn’t reported that. Unless your friends are cool with Payton’s agent or have sources in the FO, they’re most likely telling you that out of hope.

Also, if money is what he’s after, then Dallas is obviously a much more lucrative spot. If Jerry has one thing it’s money.

Actually the way I understood it, it was staff writers for the team that have been hinting at it. Believe the last contract Payton signed, he walked around with it in his brief case a week or 2 and no one knew anything about it. Payton is interested in what he has in New Orleans... full control and a God like reverence from fans!

They could consider trading him if they don’t plan to extend him
The second part I don’t get either
Drew is at the end and he could be drafting a QB soon which puts him under a rookie contract which allows you to build around him

In researching his contracts, Payton had a built-in, opt out clause if there was a change in ownership. Tom Benson passed away, so there certainly has been a change in ownership.
And as for the "better spot"? It begins and ends with Drew Brees, and he's very close to the end. Dallas has a young nucleus that should be very enticing to any head coaching candidate, particularly an offensive-minded coach like Sean Payton.

I know that's not what you want to hear as an Eagles fan.

Look deeper. You won't like what you see, but you'll be better informed.

Consider his own words, spoken to Bryan Broaddus:

"Scout Bryan Broaddus, who previously worked alongside Payton, recently said the Saints coach remains intrigued by the idea of leading the iconic franchise.

“He understands what the [Cowboys] organization means in the grand scheme of things. Sean told me one time, ‘You coach [the Cowboys], they know your name in China. Here, I coach the Saints and they know my name in Tampa, Florida, and in Atlanta, Georgia,'” Broaddus said on The Fan. “But this is really the world’s biggest stage. And that’s the thing, you always want that big opportunity. He’s adamant about the support the Joneses give. [Jerry] would pour his last dime into trying to make this football team good if he could.

“I think there’s a mutual respect between Jerry, Stephen Jones and Sean Payton and where they’re trying to get. If that opportunity becomes available, I think Jerry will do everything he can to make sure he has the right opportunity for the right guy. If Sean Payton does become available, I think it will be under consideration by the Jones family.”

Or, as has been mentioned numerous times, Payton has the option to opt out of his contract?

The second part I don’t get either
Drew is at the end and he could be drafting a QB soon which puts him under a rookie contract which allows you to build around him

Maybe he doesn't want to start from square one, ground zero again? Maybe he'd rather spend his remaining years coaching the highest profile team in the league?

Anything is possible
But in NO he’s a god. He’s got a solid roster. Now I don’t know their cap and contract situations so that could be something
Maybe showing you can do it with another team is a motivation for him
Winning a SB with two teams gets you in the HOF as a coach so maybe that’s a factor

its about running the headlines. Same thing with Earl Thomas last year. Most of us knew it wasnt going to happen but the media kept talking about it and its good for JJ.

He's got a "solid roster" as long as Brees is there. After that, it's rebuilding. I think that's the one huge factor.

He'd certainly punch his ticket if he could. And win on the league's grandest stage in Dallas.

Was anyone else unhappy with the Saints calling passes once they got to the Rams 13 yard line with about 2 minutes left? The Saints didn't even make the Rams use both of their final time outs. I wonder if the Rams would have been able to pull that game out if the Saints had run the ball 3 times and kicked a FG. The Saints were at the Rams 13 with 1:58 left in the game. The Rams had 2 time outs. The Saints threw an incomplete pass on 1st down. The Rams did not have to use a time out. The Saints ran on 2nd down for no gain and the Rams used their 2nd time out. Then they threw again on 3rd down stopping the clock! The Saints kicked a FG with 1:42 left. They only took 16 seconds off the clock on their final series on the drive and the Rams still have one more TO left which they needed later after completing a pass in the middle of the field. Had the Saints run the ball 3 times from the 13, we don't know if they would have gotten the 1st down or not, but they could have made the Rams use up all their Times Out and also chewed up another 40 seconds of clock. As it turned out the Rams kicked a 48 yd FG with 15 seconds left. Again, we had no idea what would have happened otherwise, but the percentage strategy was to run the ball 3 times, kick the FG and give the Rams the ball back with 1 minute and no Times Out. Had JG done what Payton did, he would be ridiculed mercilessly and deservedly so.

We did everything except give a 1st for him. Pretty bad example of headlines with no substance.
