Will Jerry ever bring in a proven HC again?

Who is the other proven head coach jerry has hired besides Parcells? If you are including coaches proven in College, both Jimmy and Barry would apply

And while Barry was a proven college HC, he was also a guy just looking to coach a few more years and willing to let Jerry take care of pretty much everything else. So when they brought Switzer in, he wasn't a guy looking for control, etc.

I think that's the only real scenario where Jerry could land a "name" HC at this point. I could see Payton coming here if he just wanted to coach out a few more years, cash some checks and let Jerry and Stephen handle all the personnel and other stuff.

Barry wasn't looking to coach at all, he was living the good life. His first act was to try and get Booger and Johnson to patch things up and didn't really know Johnson was no longer at VR.

Jerry has only brought in a proven HC twice in his era. Initially to set the teams course bringing them out of potential bankruptcy and the second time to resurrect from a 5-11 Funk to gain public support for a new stadium.

What would it take for Jerry to set his ego aside again or stop his pursuit of trying to prove he can build and win a championship without a proven HC who’d receive more credit than him?

Or are we stuck in this situation until Jerry’s last breathe barring a total collapse or financial barrier?

Remember he tried winning championships with a great HC but didn’t like not receiving the credit he was pursuing. What gives us hope Jerry will change?
there hasn't been any indication that Jerry will stop meddling. I am not a garrett fan, but Jerry dictating that Moore has to call offensive plays and if he doesn't then he can go to him directly, is meddling. that's screwed up organizational structure and management that fails and has failed, so I expect that to be the same next year. I am writing next year off, as it feels like garrett is lame duck coach, with a rookie OC he doesn't fully trust (nor should he) and team in semi-turmoil generated by Jerry

"What do proven mean?"

How many teams 1st Super Bowl appearance with a specific Head Coach was with a Head Coach that had previously been an NFL Head Coach?
(I don't know the answer, just a general question)

McVay had not been a Head Coach on any level.

Mike Martz has not been a Head Coach at any level.

Belichick was considered a failure as a Head Coach but a proven D-Coordinator. This is basically the exact same scenario as Wade Phillips when he was hired in Dallas.

Much of the NFL and media thought Jimmy was in order his head when Jerry hired him as the Head Coach. Obviously he was a proven college Head Coach but many believed that Jimmy won in college because of over-whelming player talent.

Barry Switzer was a proven college Head Coach.

Chan Gailey had been a college Head Coach twice and an NFL offensive coordinator.

Dave Campo had been an NFL Defensive Coordinator.

Being an NFL Head Coach didn't go well for proven college coaches like Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier.

Mind you I'm not a Garrett hater, but that said, regardless of his "accolades", he should have brought this team much farther several times, with the talent we've had.
How exactly do we measure your assertion which sounds more like an opinion than anything factual we can document?

Under Garrett we’ve either had a top 10 offense and QB with a bottom tier defense or now a top 10 defense with a bottom tier offense and average to below average QB.

I’m not sure how we are arriving we should have gone further than we have? Could we have gone further? Sure , but how do we determine we should have gone further?

Good question.

What I meant is with Jerry’s ways how will we attract a more proven or up an coming potential HC.

And why do we think Jerry will change his ways now to attract one?

If you were one of these prospects why come here?

Sadly, Jerry’s senility and ego will likely prevent him from hiring a real HC. Also need to ask who would want to work for him. The only shot is humiliation.

It’s interesting we don’t ever appear to pursue any of the up and coming coord or HC being pursued by other teams.

Instead we hire those who others aren’t knocking on their door.

The real question is will a proven HC want to come here and work with Jerry?
That’s exactly it! Unless Jerry comes down off his high horse and relinquishes control, most well established coaches wouldn’t want to come here. Some people tend to think Payton is a very likely candidate due to his familiarity with Jerry...and that’s not a good thing, lol, unless Payton has a “come to Jesus” meeting with Jerry and tells him to keep his grubby know football nothing mitts out of his business.

Jerry’s such an idiot, had he put his pride aside a long time ago who knows what would have happened. Doubtful it would be worse than the past 20+ years though.

Proven what and where, most that are available would have been let go right? he has already and BTW JJ wasn't proven he became great here just because you are great in college doesnt mean it translates to the pros too many to mention But Petrino, Saban, and Chip Keeley headline this list.. so it would have to be big name to be proven and it means they would have already been fired a few times..also would mean they would have to make it work with their new team, Jimmy didnt with Miami, Parcells was alrdy one foot into retirement..

a college coach isn't exactly a shoe in for greatness and guys like Mcvay, Pederson and others were so far from proven it dosnt fit this narrative..Jerry was hoping he developed garett, garetts not great but not bad and the next guy will have to succeed before hes proven..:popcorn:

I have long said Garrett does not get another HC offer in the NFL and OC would be a long shot. Just look at the guy’s coaching tree. It is like Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree.

Of course it's an opinion, but it's a very popular opinion. Not everything is quantifiable, and not all stats prove "facts".

I think the first thing people have to accept is being a successful NFL HC is a very tough job and much tougher after FA entered into it. The turnover is 20-25% every year, like clockwork. There are really only two HC's that have weathered the storm well, Belichick and Reid. How well could coaches like Lombardi, who didn't fare as well at WAS, Landry, Noll, Levy and Walsh have done when the first sign of success brings the vultures? Think that Steel Curtain and Doomsday wouldn't have been difficult to hold together. Backup QB's were better back then when today, not all 32 teams can find a suitable QB1. And if you are a HC with a QB problem, you have a Real problem.

Petrino, Saban and Spurrier couldn't get back to college fast enough once they got a taste of legal pay to play. They also got their first taste of the tail wagging the dog with players' salaries.

If you took Belichick out of NE and dropped him into one of the lower 8 teams, as heralded as he is, it would take him at least 2 seasons maybe 3 or 4 depending on cap space, to get back to close to what he's built in NE. Time used to be the HC's ally and now it is the enemy. Garrett lucked out with the Cowboys that he could withstand a really poorly coached 4-12 season but other HC's get canned for better than that. The difference with a Belichick is that it would take him time but the team would improve form where it was immediately.

I’m not sure how fans have seen a championship caliber team under Garrett?

I certainly haven’t heard or seen much popular rhetoric as such except a few members on this site.

Stats and facts certainly would support a narrative we haven’t had a championship caliber team whereas it’s more of a subjective opinion supporting a narrative otherwise.

The Cowboys are a dead end job this era.

That said , not many really expect anyone to have much success with Jerry’s dysfunctional organization.

This franchise is going to have to get a but lucky with their next coach IMO. Some hot shot assistant who is just desperate for a head gig.

Or Payton, who just wants to coach out a few remaining years and head off into retirement.

When Jerry wanted a proven HC, he got Parcells.

Garrett had similar experience to McVay when Garrett was hired as the Head Coach.

Sometimes the recycled Head Coaching hires work out; however, it seems that as many or more successful Head Coaches were not previously NFL Head Coaches and many were not college Head Coaches.

Most fans wish Sean Payton would have been hired by the Cowboys instead of the Saints; however, while Payton had more years as an assistant coach than Garrett, he was only promoted to OC in 2000 and then demoted before joining the Cowboys in 2003. He was never officially given the title of OC in Dallas, IIRC. Was Payton a proven coach when the Saints hired him?

Personally, there are only a few current NFL Head Coaches that I would want Jerry to hire if they became available.

I think the young, less proven guys like McVay are often a better option.
