Would you take a DE in the 2nd?

I’m on record talking about how exciting the DT class is this year, but the DE class might be just as good.

I think an honest argument could be made either way way depending on your trust in Gregory / Taco moving forward...but would you pull the trigger if a solid pass rusher fell?

Our top DEs:

A guy without a contract and he has some injury history
A guy that finally had a year that wasn't packed with suspensions
A first round pick that just isn't taking the step that he was projected to require
A fourth round pick entering his second year

All things being equal, adding a DE might not have the immediate impact that adding a DT would. However, the long term reliability of our top 4 DEs leaves a lot to be desired.

If DE is BPA, do it.

They cost the most in free agency of non QBs.

TEs cost the least.

This is certainly my line of thinking in he why you’d consider the pick.

I guess the bigger question would be if you had a similarly graded DE / TE / WR available would you pull the trigger?

DE is the most valuable position and the class offers value at the other positions in later rounds...I wouldn’t be mad.

If a dude like Polite / Burns falls and it’s between them and a TE like Sternberger...I think it creates a good debate.

BPA is how I hope they draft always so yes. Especially when this D line class is so deep you may get a guy in the 2nd that may be considered a 1st rounder in other drafts.

I guess the next question is who will be there and are they worth it? Put me down for maybe...

If a DE was BPA then I'd be all for it, you can never have too many pass rushers. But if there were players with similar grades, then it gets fun. I'd probably take DE over DT, and it would be close between that and TE.

I like the pieces we have at DT actually - Collins is injury prone although pretty good when he's healthy, Crawford's a solid 3T, and Woods is a fireplug. The DTs held up well all year until the Rams basically knew their playcalls, so I can give them a mulligan for that one. I still want a war daddy 3T, but at pick #60 you are more likely looking at another Crawford or Collins rather than a war daddy, and playing behind two functional 3Ts would make it difficult to get a rook on the field. There is a hole behind Woods for day 1 rotational snaps though.

DE - still don't trust Gregory: drugs aside, he made way too many stupid decisions on the field last year. I'm writing off Taco. Armstrong has a chance to make it, but you don't count on a 4th round backup for anything. The way I see it, if Gregory hits, a rookie could still get heavy snaps in the rotation if he beats out Taco. If Gregory fails, the rook could quickly be in line to start.

TE - a 90%-of-snaps position in our offense and our best option is Geoff Swaim. If we could find a real-deal TE1 to help out Dak and sort of eliminate the mess of JAGs we have floating around right now, I'd be all for it. It's kind of a debate between how much do you want a starter at a cheap but surprisingly tough to find position, vs a rotational guy at a primo position. And of course, the exact players available would influence that decision too.

Agree for the most part outside of DT. I don’t think we have anyone I’d consider a solid starter on the roster. That’d be my top choice for sure.

This is how I feel, but I’m warming up to the idea more and more.

If someone solid is there, and is comparable to a TE that isn’t much of an upgrade over Schultz...sign me up.

In general the probability of the higher value positions being the true BPA at #58 is lower.

For example the options relative to the Cowboys draft board that might be available at #58:
10th rated DE
5th rated TE

An easier example is OG vs OT. If teams always went strictly BPA without regard for position value, they would almost always end up picking an OG over OT at #58.

That is a really dumb post.

Tell the copy and paste boy that sometimes the 10th rated DE can be rated higher than the 5th rated TE. It has to do with the talent available that particular year of the draft. Not some nonsensical mathematical formula you created because you think you're really smart.

We know that you don't understand the salary cap.

I'm sure that talking about the cap and numbers brings back bad memories of math classes when you were a wee lad.

You didn't even understand my post which is a simple concept. I didn't say a 5th rated DE equals a 5th rated TE on the Cowboys draft board. Most can understand that an 8th rated DE might be higher on their board than a 5th rated TE.

Only thing with this logic is that’s saying that the position rankings are even every year and that the 5th rated TE grades out the same as the 5th rated DE.

Definitely not the case this year.

Can never have too many good DL. For DE we look good if Lawrence, Randy and Taco are all healthy and available but we know Lawrence has a history of injuries and randy's history of addiction put them at risk for missing some or all games. Another up and coming DE certainly wouldn't hurt this group at all.
