Honestly, I think Jarwin and Schultz are better than most people realize. I think you have a pretty good concept here, assuming we can get him, and at a reasonable price.

I think people have a habit of latching onto preconceived ideas and have a hard time letting go of them. Many condemned Jarwin and Schultz before giving them a chance, and cannot let themselves accept that they showed considerable promise once they finally got an opportunity the last quarter of the season. I can’t blame anyone for not being all on board with them - I’m not there myself - but they certainly showed Enough to spur some optimism.

Exactly, and not all TEs are going to be the type who can box out defenders the way Witten did, or bull rush their way through defenders like Gronk. I'd say most are just bigger, slower WRs.

I think you're on the money here. It's undeniable that both started slowly, and both had limited opportunities before Swaim was injured. Heck Schultz wasn't even active and was looking like a bust. But as the season progressed, both guys stepped up and started playing better. That's arrow pointing up. And there's no denying how Jarwin specifically finished the season. It's just too bad injury stopped that momentum for the playoffs.

I don't think anyone is saying "Pro Bowler", but just that the signs we see were encouraging rather than discouraging as they were to start the year.

I'd love a guy that can do it all, but I'd settle for a guy that can get in the way blocking while actually being a threat in the passing game. If you can get defense's to have to account for your TE, along with Cooper and Gallup outside, with the threat of Zeke Elliott? That's a nightmare for an opposing defense.

Low risk / high reward due to a (likely) cheap 1-year prove it contract...I for one am okay with taking the chance on Eifert and the current stable of TEs versus allocating draft capital, unless someone too good to pass up falls in our lap

Right? He's like the Matt ? of Tight Ends based off a couple preseason games. I mentioned him in another post, I forgot the safety' s last name we hung on to, based on a supposed wealth of "potential." He was just always hurt, "that's all." Lol
With Rico? The light should have come on by now I think.
I'll concede there will always be "some" late bloomers when it comes to players NFL success. But like Landry told a young Parcells I believe, after about 3 years, you kinda know what ya got with most players.
Probably thinking of safety Matt Johnson.

Both guys continued to become bigger parts of the offense as the season progressed, both trending upwards, both becoming factors, both improving.
But, can either of them do what Witty has done?! o_O

TJ Hockenson is the guy we need, but we don't have a 1st rd pick. :(

Hockenson+$13M in cap room > Cooper

And you can keep telling yourself what you like.

The fact is, the last 3 years, all of our 2nd and 3rd round picks but Jaylon got significant starts their rookie season. Most of them would have gotten more starts but for injury.

Name me the last rookie TE that started significant games.[/QUOTE]

Martellus and Fasano both started about half a dozen games as rookies, presumably with Witten getting the first TE start in those games too. They likely get more starts as rookies w/o Witten hogging TE snaps.

And both did very little. But you're right that they would have gotten more snaps if Witten wasn't here. But this team doesn't play rookies a lot fresh out of the box, that's well established. Not even Witten himself, and that kid was as mature and ready as anyone could have asked for.

Any second round TE would not play a lot in 2019.

I started this detailing the early recent picks who played a lot as rookies. Then the *2nd* TEs who also did so.

If that 2nd TE is our best TE, which wouldn't be hard, he'll play 90% of our snaps. He'll play plenty if he's just our 2nd best TE.
