For example if Witten gets 100k per game incentive then you have to go back to last year

If he played 10 games then the League would say "it is likely that Witten plays 10games so 10x 100k = 1m cap charge this season"..... the other 6 games would be added to the next season's cap if he hit those incentives

Since Witten played 0 games last year it likely that he plays 0 games this year so his 2.5m in per game incentives would hit next year..... his cap hit is just his base salary of 2m
How about incentives like rec, yds and tds?

Works the same. If those numbers were met the previous season, then they are considered likely to be earned and count against the cap. If they were not met, then they do not count against the cap and would be added to the following season's cap if met. Similarly, if a likely incentive is not met, the team receives a rebate at year-end to carry over into the following season.

Man Hurns at 5 mil?

I would much rather he goes and put that 5 mil towards Beasley or another slot receiver

Hurns is pretty much a done deal they are keeping him per Stephen Jones they say he is back working out !!!

Looks like they are using Witten's 2017 numbers for the incentives

He played 16 games with 63 catches 560yds and 5 TDs

His cap hit is 4.25m this year

Depends on if the incentives are consider likely to be earned or not likely to be earned.
Witty's not about $, but rather the love of the game. Just as his wife (who is a nurse) loves helping people.

Neither of the two need to work, but they do because of the love they have for their careers and each other.

Lol the likely not to be earned isn't a shot at Witten. Lol it's how they word incentives in a contract. They are either considered likely to be or unlikely to be earned.

I doubt he'll hit them again if they stick to his around 25 snaps a game.

The incentives were only for Games on the 53 Roster and Games on the 46.... totaling 2.25m

He played 16 on both in 2017 so both count against the cap this year

The other 750k is for the Playoffs and we missed the Playoffs in 2017 so it doesn't count this year

Gotcha. I though there might have been "stat" incentives . Thanks, buddy.

and most thought we had so much cap this year, so much money, lets go shopping.
Never was going to happen when you have 2nd contracts pending with your RFAs.
People need to wake up to the reality that this team, with this front office,, and that excludes
McClay, because he is the only FO that is worth his salt, he keeps the boat from totally sinking.
Everyone else upstairs is totally clueless on how to compete in todays NFL, where you have teams that
have vested interest in actually understanding the cap and how you survive in a cap based system.
One would think that just merely existing in and under the cap for what,, since Jay Novacheck days, when the cap first started, that this Cowboys franchise would have finally figured out how to compete in a cap based environment.
That's the true problem that seems to be ignored, its the brain trust, or lack there of.
Basically journeyman concepts, and failed attempts to operate.

Some of you guys worry about Jerrys money more than he does..plenty of cap space. Name a player they've had to let walk too soon because they didn't have the cap space or didn't want to pay. Terrence Newman is about the only one

We have plenty of available space

We are at 22m right now and get so much more if they wanted to

I posted a chart on Page 1 that shows all the ways they can create space and how much

DAL could easily create another 40m in cap space with a few restructures and a couple extensions

Potential Cap Savings- remember this just a MENU of options, not suggestions

Restructures
TSmith............7.5m
ZMartin...........7.5m
TFred...............4m
TCrawford........4m
SLee................3m

Cuts/Trades
DLawrence......20.m
SLee................7m
TCrawford........6m
AHurns.............5m
Witten...............4.25m
TWill.................2.25m
JHeath..............2m
JThomas...........2m
CJones.............800k

Extension

DLawrence..........10m
ACooper..............7m
Zeke...................(2 years left)
BJones................0m
Dak..................would add at least 6m to his 1.7m cap hit

We also have to account for the Rule of 51

Since SLee was a pay cut and not a release there is no need to replace him on the 51 man list for another player that makes 490k

That is like another 490k in savings on top of the 3.5m created by the re-do

If SLee had been waived they would drop his 7m salary but add a 490k player for a 6.5m net savings
This way we keep SLee and save 3.5m off his cap hit..... so for an extra 3m we get to keep SLee

The same thing applies to Witten..... he is set to earn 4.25m against the cap but you have to bump a 500k off the 51.... that means the net cost is only 3.76m

When DThompson was signed for 720k the net cost was really only 230k when you drop a player

The main thing I’m looking at:

Dak- 30
Cooper- 18
Zeke- 14
DLaw- 20
Jones- 12
Jaylon- 11

Those are all generously high cap hits for upcoming extensions. That comes out to $105M...the Cowboys are projected for $125M in cap space in 2020. And that’s including Crawford at $9M and huge cap hits for the big 3 o lineman that could easily be destructured to save a lot.

So again, what’s everyone worried about?

I'm not crunching the numbers so I'll take your word for it...no worries if that's the case.

Great point

And those numbers are probably about 40m too much
