What DE’s will be there at 58?

Upon reflection of the combine and seeing several mocks I feel confident that our choices for pick 58 for DE and DL will be at the 8-10th ranked player at their respected position. That is if we make the right choice, not much chance we are getting immediate help on the defense IMO. Now the following year that could all change with the project that will be our selection. Fingers crossed we stick to our board and do not try a lottery pick to make up for our poor drafting slot. I see a Front Office that needs to maintain some discipline I just hope it is the Jones clan.

If all 7 of what I consider the top tier pass rushers are gone at 58, then that means a darn good S or DT will be available.

Yeah, but will JJ and company have the sense to take one of those, or will they reach for a lower tier DE?

Well they took Taco with a first round pick, a "project", by their own admission, so it's gonna take a lot of finger crossing...

The 8th best DE available could be a guy like Jaylon Ferguson or Austin Bryant. If they’re a top 50 player on our board you take them. You have to look at what the draft offers not just their position rank. The 8th best pass rusher this year could be a better talent than the 4th best player at another position.

I believe we have that basic assumption learned. Ferguson just might be available, he is a pure 4-3 DE just blow the whistle and he creates chaos. I also think 3 TE and probably 7 D linemen in the first rd. yikes

He’s a tweener that just ran a 4.9.

Crawford is probably his ceiling, so I’m not taking him in the 2nd.
If you can get a Crawford in the second rd that would be very good IMO. The guy is a player and fits in well with the team.

Not a bust just a normal draft talent at his slot in the draft, we have been spoiled by McClay with his quick performing picks from the past. Taco is what normally happens when you pick that late in the first round for need. I agree the path for Taco will be defined this year, maybe bust maybe better things either way year three as they say separates the wheat from the chafe and either way I still have complete trust in the scouts.
He was a 1st rounder @ 28 - that’s not a spot for a “normal draft talent at his slot”.

We seem to be confusing each other, most picks at the position of 28 in the draft are not finished players and considered more like projects that should come to fruition in a couple of years, mostly adding little value to the team as a rookie.

Have to disagree with you there...

I’m aiming for Lee, Lawrence, Smith type players in the 2nd if possible...
To each his own but IMO Crawford has gotten a bad rep on this forum because of his contract not because of his play. He has moved around the DL most of his career helping out whenever there is an injury, impairing his improvement. Just my perspective. Crawford talent wins you games, but I agree he is not Sean Lee, or Smith. You picked two outliers from round 2 that were not expected to flourish. Rd two are talents who are projects if not than it is a lottery win. IMO

I like Crawford...and think he's a steady player for us but he's vastly overpaid.

I think someone like him should ideally be the floor for picking in the 50s.

I disagree with this,we can find a Dt who can start right away even in the 3rd Rd this year.

That may say more about how you view our Dline than the talent in the draft, either way I appreciate your opinion. I am writing in generalities about the draft and the talent at that particular pick, of course there could be outliers that could contribute but we would have to hit the lottery again after hitting on LVE I think we are running low on draft luck after round one.

Well our DTs are below average and it’s a loaded DT class. Not sure we can get a day one starter in the 3rd but I feel good that we can get someone that can get a lot of snaps in a rotation and turn into a starter.

Taco started about half the games in 2018 which was his 2nd year. That's not far off pace for a late 1st round pick on average.

This will be a make or break year for Taco as he’s entering year 3. I liked the talent when we drafted him just need him to take that next step.

Armstrong, and potentially an early draft selection, will be competing hard for that starting spot.
