We need a Safety

And what happens if the draft comes, there is a run on safeties and the ones you like at 58 go by the wayside? Do you trade up with the limited picks you have? Do you then reach for a safety with a lower grade? Do you wait until the 3rd or 4th round where a lesser prospect likely be? Or do you just say, "Oh well, we have Heath so it's all good!"

This logic that we can't try to improve our starting safeties now because we will just draft one is so preposterous that it makes perfect sense that's probably the thinking of this bizarre franchise.
Well, just don't apply that logic to me. I wasn't (and still am not) against grabbing a FA safety.

As for the draft.....Let the draft come to you. No panicking or reaching

If one they really like is in striking range, they might try to pull off a trade of some sort, but I wouldn't count on it.

fwiw...Right or wrong, they like Heath WAY better than you do...for better or worse. That is very clear.
I think they like Xavier as well. Maybe Frazier too. Not so sure about Thompson.

Heath graded our as NFL average last year, while Woods was above average and Frazier was below average....according to PFF (who I sometimes take with a grain of salt but is better than nothing)

According to sources, the Cowboys are talking details of a 1 year deal with this guy.

No.. seriously. Heath is trash. We desperately need a safety and all of the good possibilities are drying up.
He would draw a flag on every tackle in today’s game...

LOL yeah but he was doing his “Where’s Waldo” impression on Goff’s keeper. Heath sucks so hard he should be a spokesman for Dyson.

I initially thought Jeff Heath might have lost the ball, but he was in man coverage on Gerald Everett, who was blocking Tyrone Crawford on the play. Heath could have gambled and just dropped the assignment and gone after Goff but he didn’t.

Not saying he did the absolute right move there but how many times have we've seen a late release from a TE/RB that blocks for a few seconds and then releases, sometimes into a wide open area?

I thought the safety play last year was pretty decent. Yeah, we need a safety but I do not see a desperate need for safety at this time. The team was 10-6 with a playoff victory.

And we can find a good safety in the draft. I like Marvel Tell III of USC.

But the draft can't come to you if you head into and have to get a safety. Because if the draft breaks a certain way not in your favor, suddenly you are chasing a safety in the draft and that's never a good position to be in.

Their love affair with Heath is downright bizarre. Nick Hayden Redux.

Exactly, Woods looks like a solid player, not great but not bad either. And they got him for a future #5, will pay him peanuts and then get a comp pick when he leaves like they did with Anthony Hitchens.

"We can find a good safety in the draft"..

I'm 99.9 percent sure that narrow line of thought is dominating the minds our front office right now (yet again). They draft well but this "all eggs in the draft basket" line of thought is partially why we are stuck in perpetual "almost but no soup for you" mode.

Good teams use every avenue to improve the team... Including free agency...

Watching that play, it's clear that Everett is not going out on a route and Heath needs to recognize that. Everett actually blocks down, in the other direction from where he could have possibly ran a route. By the time he makes his block, Goff has already rolled out and there's no way Everett could even get into the pass pattern, if he was even supposed to.

That play highlights a clear issue some have with Heath. He seems to lack awareness at time out there and can be slow to diagnose plays.

No argument here. Maybe that take by Dc.com is wrong and he was supposed to be aware of the flat but blew it.

The hate for Jeff Heath on this board is comical.
An NFL player, one of roughly 1800 in the world, gets called trash.

Maybe his teammates will vote him as a captain. The meltdown on this board would be glorious!...lol.

I get it. It's an obvious position in need of an upgrade. But the hate is ridiculous.
DT could use an upgrade as well. However, I don't see anyone hating on any guy in that rotation.

This draft lines up pretty well to not have to chase safeties or DTs, but if it comes to that....don't do it. If you leave the draft without addressing an area of need the way you wanted, then there are still other options. My guess (again, right or wrong) is they are not panicking about their safeties but do want to upgrade if the opportunity presents itself.

Btw, there are still some safeties available on the market.

I'd like to introduce you to a player called Tyrone Crawford.

How does looking at multiple safeties change the point? What if there is a run and a number of the ones they like go off the board before they pick 58th? Is that an impossibility? What if that happens and then a few more go off the board by 90 and they are left with picking, say, the 7th best safety on their draft board in the 3rd or 4th round? The whole point of adding a vet is that it's insurance in case that happens. You grab a guy you know is better than Heath, plug him in and if you can draft someone that turns out to be better, great.

And who said overpay for a safety? I have never said overpay for a safety. In fact, after Thomas got what he got, I lobbied for guys like Tre Boston or George Iloka who would likely be cheaper, short term contracts that don't hurt your cap, present a short term upgrade and allow you more flexibility in the draft where you can still take a S there if one falls to your pick that you like and also allows you to not have to force a pick just to make sure you get a S.

It means they're shopping for safeties. They could still sign Iloka or Boston or Quin, etc.

That it's a deep draft means they're likely to get solid value on a safety in the 2nd or 3rd round. Sure, it's possible that doesn't happen, but it's likely.

Iloka is the guy I want. Tall and rangy like Richard had with Kam Chancellor. He played pretty well for the Bengals in a defense similar to what Richard wants to run.

Is Adrian Phillips still on the market or did he sign?
