These are the players I continue to see mentioned as needing new contracts:
Dak
Cooper
Byron Jones
Zeke
Jaylon

Only 3 are unrestricted in 2020:
Dak
Cooper
Byron Jones

The Cowboys just need to re-sign 2 of the 3 and then can use the Franchise Tag on the one that is not re-signed.

Yes we ALL know that Jones is the lowest priority. No need to keep repeating it.

They've already open discussions with the agents for Dak and Cooper.

Sidenote: Jerry is not involved in the negotiations for Dak and was not involved in the DLaw contract.

I don't expect the Cooper contract to be difficult. The current top paid WR averages 18M. I expect the Cowboys to offer Cooper 1 dollar over 18M. Cooper then says thanks and signs the contract.

They are not going to learn anymore about Dak than they already know between the beginning and end of the 2019 season. They might as well get the contract done this year.

Byron Jones is still somewhat unknown at CB in terms of whether he is just good or if he can become and remain an elite CB. It would be good to just wait and see how he fares in 2019.

Keeping Jones on the Franchise Tag for 2020 would be a good option. If Jones/Agent is willing to sign a "team friendly" deal this year then the Cowboys could roll the dice on that. At the very worst he will be a slightly above average NFL CB. Best case he can be the #1 CB in the league but he'll need a few INTs to get that designation.

If they draft a CB this year it's possible that player could replace either Jones or Brown (FA in 2020). If not they could re-sign Brown and Franchise Jones then draft a CB early in the 2020 draft.

I think a "surprise" pick would be a CB as early as pick 58.
Not sure they are too interested in giving Jones a possible mega deal, and Brown is set for a new contract in 2020 as you mentioned.
If a CB matches what Richard wants there size and skill wise, it would be smart to strongly consider them so you aren't forced to re-sign either player cause a lack of depth.

The slot corner pay has jumped to 7-8mil AAV in free agency land and I'm sure Brown could ask for that if he has another decent to good year.

When looking at the big CBs in this draft, I don't see any projected to the 2nd round that would cause the Cowboys to pick a CB there. It seems that the CBs likely available at #58 are just more developed than some of the 3rd/4th round CBs but not really better physically. Since the pick would really be geared at getting a player to develop for 2020, I think the 3rd or 4th round is most likely. If Isaiah Johnson is available at the Cowboys initial 4th round pick I think he would be the pick there. I don't know if they would pick him in the 3rd or not. In the 7th, Chris Westry 6-4.5, 199, 4.36 forty would be a good developmental pick.

DAL can use both the Franchise Tag and the Transition Tag next year because it is the last year of the CBA

I would Transition Tag BJones and see if we have to match

I'm actually starting to think we as fans, plus the media may be blowing the whole issues of resigning our core players out of proportion. When it's all said and done, would have signed all five, maybe six ( including DLaw), with little or no difficulties.

Good call on Coop deal......

Now, IIRC from the Miami/Vernon deal, I thought they dropped the transition tag in order to gain a comp pick once they realized they under estimated his market and weren't going to match the Giants offer.
Would the Cowboys be in line for a comp pick if a team signs him on the transition tag and they don't match?

No the Transition Tag is still around

There is no compensation except a probable Comp Pick but DAL can match any offers

I think part of the point is Jaylon is making 2nd round pick money and is way out-performing his contract. And of the list, the most likely to demand a contract before his current one is done is by far Zeke, so that's why those 2 are added into the discussion.
