@Jake

I can only think you take Brugler's opinion "with a grain of salt" as well

yeah, like he's the acknowledged god of draft evaluations, I imagine if you reviewed all his "grades" you'd find he's little if any better overall than a lot of other "experts"...

Why?
Just because he is knowledgeable on draft analysis of players does not make him always correct. It doesn't mean his ranking should carry the same weight.
Kiper is supposed to be a draft expert also, but look how often they all turn out to be wrong.

Not saying Dallas should be ranked in the top 10 or anything like that, but no way are the #31.

I don’t claim that you have to accept Brugler’s opinion as the be all and end all. Only that his encyclopedic knowledge of the prospects makes it a bit too convenient to dismiss his opinion just because we don’t like it.

But then CBS's Chad Rueter had another opinion

Dallas Cowboys
Draft picks: UCF DT Trysten Hill (No. 58 overall); Penn State OG Connor McGovern (No. 90); Memphis RB Tony Pollard (No. 128); Miami CB Michael Jackson (No. 158); Miami DE Joe Jackson (No. 165); Texas A&M S Donovan Wilson(No. 213); Ohio State RB Mike Weber (No. 218); Oregon Edge Jalen Jelks (No. 241)
Day 1 grade: A
Day 2 grade: A
Day 3 grade: A
Overall grade: A
Draft analysis: Amari Cooper showed what he could become when teaming with Dak Prescott last year. Yes, Dallas gave up a first-round pick to get him, but let's remember -- he's just 24 years old, not a veteran who will be in his 30s before too long. If the team can't sign him to a long-term deal, then the grade gets adjusted downward, but I don't see that happening.

Replacing David Irving just got easier with Hill bringing his quick get-off to Dallas. McGovern could play guard or center, depending on the health of veteran pivot Travis Frederick. Pollard's versatility as a runner, receiver, and kick returner made him a solid fourth-round pick. The two Jacksons from Miami are great values. Michael Jackson is a big corner who could take over for Byron Jones if he departs in free agency after the 2019 season, and Joe Jackson is an underrated power rusher. Weber gives the Cowboys another former Buckeye RB -- he will take pressure off of Zeke.

The problem with Reuter’s grading is that he gave almost everyone an ‘A’.

31. Dallas Cowboys
2019 draft class
2 58 DT Trysten Hill
3 90 OG/C Connor McGovern
4 128 RB Tony Pollard
5 158 CB Michael Jackson Sr.
5 165 EDGE Joe Jackson
6 213 SS Donovan Wilson
7 218 RB Mike Weber
7 241 EDGE Jalen Jelks
Favorite pick: Connor McGovern, OG/C, Penn State
The Cowboys drafted a higher-rated player in the third round than the second round. McGovern has experience at center and guard and gives the Cowboys a nasty run blocker with upside as a pass protector. His versatility will give the Cowboys options up front in the future, like possibly moving Connor Williams outside to tackle.
Questionable pick: Trysten Hill, DT, UCF
Without a first-round pick, the Cowboys weren’t going to be high on this list, but it is understandable why many fans aren’t excited about Hill, their top pick in the draft. He butted heads with coaches (and teammates) at UCF and needs time to develop. This pick felt like a reach because of their desire to land a high-upside three-technique in a draft with limited options at that position.
Day 3 pick who could surprise: Michael Jackson Sr., CB, Miami (Fla.)
Jackson was thought to be a top-100 pick over the summer, but he didn’t quite have the senior year many expected with only six passes defended and zero interceptions. But the size/speed traits are worth betting on in the fifth round, and defensive assistant Kris Richard has a track record of developing long, speedy corners into quality contributors.

By the 2024 draft, this class will have produced 4 starters, 3 compensation picks, and a couple of cheap veteran contracts for depth.
This was a good Cowboy draft. Maybe not glitz or what the media rewards, but a solid fit for their organizational approach.

interesting....yet he mocked Trysten Hill to us leading up to the draft.
we'll see.

Thus the answer.

His opinion is based on his analysis of available talent. In his opinion, they did not get optimal value.

Dallas, on the other hand, believes they optimized their talent options based on their needs. We'll see how it all plays out long-term; it seems that was part of their process.

I love when someone tags me in a thread in which I haven't posted. I'm feeling the love, and you still called LVE "Bobby Carpenter 2.0". :muttley:

Brugler is from NE Ohio, just like me. He has no NFL experience, just like me. He's also young enough to be my son. So yeah, his opinion is just his opinion.

I don't think there is an acknowledged god of draft evaluation.

If you know of one, please point them out so we can ignore everything else as noise.

That might be true in some of these cases.

But I do feel comfortable with his explanation of it being a pick based on need for the position and the perception he wouldn't last until 90.

Agreed.

Marinelli better turn him into the player they think he can be.

He mocked Hill to them at 90.
That was my issue with Hill.
I don't mind the fit, but thought we reached

Like I said on another thread; I think we could've had Thornhill AND Hill, not either/or.

Hill may end up being beastly though

If hill is your guy and you can't guarantee his availability in the 3rd, you just take him and tune out all the nonesense. Stephen and McClay have largely been doing a great job with the overall draft strategy for years. Let's see how this plays out.

McClay has always had drafts with first round picks, so it is harder to judge him. Other drafts where they either traded away or dropped out of the first have been about what you expect, which is terrible.
