My question was, of what was available who should the Cowboys have drafted at 58?

I asked that question because I suspect most people will say Safety. To which I would reply, "be specific...which one?"

The reason I ask is because I think most people had a pet cat Safety they wanted and were hoping to replace Heath.

Here's the problem: Most people's pet cat was Juan Thornhill. I like him as well. The problem is he is a Free Safety not a Strong Safety, meaning he would have been a replacement for Xavier Woods, a guy I believe the Cowboys really already like as a starter, so in hindsight, and despite the front offices supposed interest in Thornhill, that pick really didn't make sense for the Cowboys unless they were planning on playing two Free Safeties at once.

Considering who they did draft, that suggest from the beginning they were looking for a Strong Safety.

Once I say that, though, I'm sure some will bring up Taylor Rapp, which begs the question: Does Rapp really give us more than Heath does presently? Because I really don't think so. In fact, I'd say Rapp would have been even more of a liability in coverage than Heath is presently, so all in all, my point is, I get why the Cowboys went in the direction they did.
I say thornhill. He has the athleticism. Todays NFL does away with the traditional SS. Every player in the secondary needs to be able to cover and have speed. Plus thornhill's tackling couldn't be worse than Heath's.

In McClay I trust based on his track record.
Having said that, what exactly does meeting with a potential employer to go over aspects of your future job on your birthday tell you?
I don't even celebrate my birthday.
It's the same as Google/Microsoft/Amazon/the Dallas Cowboys wanting to interview you and go over particulars about the job on your birthday.
"Uh, can we do it some other time? I've got the blow out the candles on my birthday cake."
What it tells you is that Hill isn't a complete and utter IDIOT!
I guess we can't be too sure nowadays. Sigh.

How many years without a championship are we on now? How many with McClay? How long does he get?
McClay is a talent evaluator and acquisitioner. He's not a coach.
He has assembled enough talent for this team to take the next step.
If it doesn't get there, blame Garrett and ultimately Jerry Jones. But not McClay.

looks like the cowboys front office is starting to lose patience in taco. I really hope that he comes to camp ready to show that he was worth the first round pick. this is year three and now is time to show something or just move on.

Good to see you back on the scene my friend!

I mean, really the team should show zero patience with him at the point.
Your *** on that field and ball your balls off! Every single practice snap!
Go at it like Greg Hardy!*

*Not the bad stuff, but if you ever got a chance to see Hardy in practice... he was at 1000% every single time up.
He was a terror in practice. That's what Taco needs to do.

Thornhill honestly is who I was chanting as I waited for them to announce it. Can't lie about that.

But like I said above, most people have Thornhill pegged as a Free Safety...and there are reports that suggest he's a bit tentative when it comes to hitting, which is not what you want from your SS in the box. So, if anything, they would have probably moved Woods to SS, and had Thornhill step in at FS. The Free Safety is regarded as the QB of the defense, which is not all the ideal of landing spot for a bottom of the 2nd rookie.

Overall, I felt they may have taken Hill a bit early but it's only too early if you think he would have still been there at 90...which none of us can honestly say one way or another. There were quite a few players taken sooner than expected so if you have a guy that you identify as having the qualities you want, it's probably best to take him while you still can. As far as physical traits are concerned, Hill is a rarity. Guys over 300 don't typically move like he does, so again, I understand why they went the direction they did.

I've been around...just don't have the same amount of time to devote to it as I once did. But I stop by just about every day to see what topics are up for discussion.

How have you been good sir?

Ppl look at FS and SS as too rigid. In todays NFL I feel like they can be interchangeable. Plus when teams pass more than run I would rather have 2 free safeties out there.

This Writer/Agent thing has entirely messed up my world right now. i'm just trying to push forward with the storytelling and let that sort itself out in the meantime.

I like all the times that the GM (or head of player personnel or whatever Jerry allows McClay to call himself) of an NFL team said a day later how poorly they did.

What else is McClay going to say? "We really blew it. Not one of our better efforts."

You just might be on to something there and like you I was really hoping for a Heath upgrade, but at the same time I can't be mad at them finally addressing 3-tech in a somewhat meaningful way...provided he's the player he is being hyped up to be.

We will see.

I've had a bad case of writers block going on. I've started countless contributions for this site and have finished nothing in almost a year now. Not sure what me deal is but for the most part I think I just got bored with arguing the same points over and over with the same people who refuse to accept that I am always right.
