Totally incorrect. If it works out then you absolutely made a good decision.

Emmitt Smith played three years on his rookie contact and then got a big extension one year before the Salary Cap was implemented. I'd love to see someone say that was a mistake .

5...years...90MM....and you think the guaranteed money would be 36MM? Less than what Gurley got GTD what will be 2 years earlier at that point and on a 4 year deal?

These are fantasy numbers.
I said in the post that its guaranteed money that's important, not the total devided by number of years. and I meant for example to make a point. I didn't intend to suggest that would be the contract. so don't take the numbers literally.

This idea we just franchise him twice and how that isn't akin to paying him big money is an odd one.

Zeke was a top 5 paid player at his position the moment he signed his first contract. He would be amongst the highest paid on each of those franchise tags.

Which means while other people picking in the first round received substantial discounts for their elite talents at other positions we paid big money for an elite talent whose production is easily replaced.

Why do people want to keep doing wasteful things?

That's why I would wait two years while he is still under rookie contract. If the guy is still a top 3 back at that time then you can make a decision about franchising him. Because that WILL cost a lot of money. But its money without the long term commitment.

And I already told why I wouldn't want to pay big money. Because we are already paying big money with the line. And because of that, you don't need a top 3 back to have a good running game.

Zeke isn't Emmitt Smith.

Some good back and forth in this thread.

I get where the OP is coming from. However, my thought is that Gurley went into the draft with that jacked up knee and IIRC wouldn't allow any team doctors to look it over.

Now, Zeke can always(knock on wood) blow out his knee, or tear his Achilles at any time, but he has been durable on the field.
Rather not see the team hand out a huge RB contract but it seems likely they will do so. Just hope it'll pay dividends for years to come.

Well practically speaking Gurley's contract is where you start if you're Zeke and his agent and given the two elapsed years you're asking for considerably more.

Unfortunately that isn't how life works. Good decisions can go wrong and bad decisions can get lucky.

Gurley has been dealing with injuries since college Zeke has not. I know what Dallas has looked like with a top rated RB and what they look like with a JAG. I'll gladly take Zeke on an extended deal.

Funny. You think Zeke is going to just wait around for 2 more years? He ain’t. Or moreover his agent will not.

Disagree. Like it has been stated. The RB is the most replaceable position in the league. The unique problem we have is that our golden QB who is going to get 30+ million relies on Zeke for his success.
This FO is trying to replicate the 90's SB runs, and it will end badly.
Totally disagree with you. Prescott is not relying on Zeke we play Smash Mouth football keep the ball away. Because they didn't want overexpose the youngest defense in the league.

I keep seeing this written. Let me be clear. The trend of running backs breaking down is not limited to guys who had injuries in college.

The gravity of the situation is the same for Zeke as it is for Gurley.

Zeke has ALREADY shown signs of decline from his rookie year. He came into his sophomore season out of shape and he hasn't been as explosive as he was in 2016 since.

Let me be clear You have your views, do not think for 1 second yours is the only one. Zeke had 2000 all purpose yards last season which was the most thus far in his career. You think it was a mistake taking him or extending him, fine. I don't sit around looking for your blessing. Most of the crap you spew is worthless. Hell there seems to be few things if any that you like.

I find this particular poster. To be very insightful and positive most of the time. I'm not understanding your evaluation. Furboy . Is the guy I was talking about my mistake

Ezekiel Elliott is human. Yes taking himself out of the game more times in crucial situations than I care to remember. That does not mean I don't appreciate him. But Superman he is not

The time to judge an extension for Zeke is when you have some idea of the numbers, amount guaranteed, etc. There are arguments to be made on both sides at that point. But this thread saying you don't resign him because he could get hurt is laughable. Its like saying you can't go to work in the morning because you might get in a car wreck on the way.

Yeah, I think after this year we could franchise him in 2020 and 2021. After that, with his workload, is a big contract the best thing for the team?
