The system was put in place for a reason. Teams play by these financial rules, and now we get to hear all these players talking about how they have "outplayed," their deals and want new contracts. How is a team supposed to operate long term when contract are not honored?

If a college team recruits specific positions and then in their mind that positionis good for 3 more years, that eans they may not recruit that position again for 2 or maybe even 3 years.(Im not talking college football, but other sports.) Now NCAA has opened up a huge can of worms, and you are about to see college teams destroyed by use of this "College Portal." Players are going to go to a school, and "Outperform," the school they went to, and put their name in the portal to transfer to a bigger school that is worthy of said players performance.

This is the current state of the NFL. Zeke, you were drafted with te 4th pick for a reason. The Cowboys didnt take Zeke hoping to get a decent player. No, they drafted him to get the guy they got, and the contract rules are in place that allows the team to do a little, somewhat, long term planning. Now what???? We are supposed to give Zeke a new deal and screw the team over for the next 2 years because he has played very well? Jalen Ramsey is another. 1st rd pick starting his 4th year. Looks like the Jags got a good deal... ooooops, nah, screw you Jags, we need to tear up his current deal and sign him to big bucks and screw up your cap situation.

Dak has been a 3 year starter and was a 4th rd pick.... who cares? So are you saying as a 4th rd pick you are just supposed to hold a clip board? What about the 1st rd pick that sucks? Do players say, yeah, Ive sucked, go ahread and tear up my rookie deal and you can redo it and pay me like an UDFA? I dont think so.

I expect the rules for contracts to get a serious make over in the next CBA, but for now???? To hell with giving Dak a anew deal. Is Cooper getting a new deal? Honestly, I like what the Steelers have done. They have said screw you player. We arent doing a new deal until the old deal is done.

Except waiting another year costs more, contracts are never not increasing.

Dak is waiting on a 100mil guaranteed deal this year or next. His agent is guilty of malpractice if he lets him risk that jackpot to play for 2mil this year.
and thats my point.. hes under contract this year. I do not understand why teams are in such a hurry to give these guys deals an entire season before they need to. The rams could be seriously regretting doing such with gurly if his knee is shot already.

I have not heard of any Cowboys player saying they've outplayed their rookie contract and demanding a new one.

The player that held out was Le'Veon Bell and that was after the Steelers put the Franchise Tag on him for the 2nd time.

Jaylen Ramsey likes to run his mouth regardless of the subject.

Players like Carson Wentz got contract extensions. The team didn't just toss out the remaining years on his contract.

Antonip Brown and OBJ didnt get new deals?

Both of those players got new contracts after being traded. That's a different issue.

OBJ signed a new contract in 2018 with the Giants because his previous contract was over.

The flip side is teams can terminate player contracts for whatever reason they feel like, even if the player is living up to that contract.

To make it fair, if they made all contract guaranteed like basketball, then players couldn’t ask for more until their current deal is done. This is far worse, because the turnover in football is so high, and there seems to be way more ‘1 hit wonders’ than any other sport. We’d end up with rosters full of grossly overpaid players, because the Terrence Williams’s And Dez Bryants and Drew Hensons and Roy E Williams’s and Jay Ratliffs would have been Cowboy lifers.

This current structure is far better, it keeps the game interesting because GM’s have all kinds of leeway to work with contracts. It’s the game within the game. Plus every single team has to work within the exact same parameters Dallas does, that’s what makes it fair.

People don't seem to understand the leverage Dak has. A deal will get done but if the Cowboys try to play hard ball, Dak will sit out. Believe me, the Commanders screwed up playing games with Cousins.

One of the biggest reasons why a team would want to extend a guy early is typically, the longer you wait, the higher the price. Take Wentz with the Eagles. They could have waited a year or two before trying to resign him, but then instead of paying $32 million a year on his extended years, they could have been looking at $40+ million a year.

The for the players, the reason they would be in a hurry to sign and extension could be due to the fact that on any given play, their careers could end in an instant. They do not work jobs that can easily be sustained for decades, so they try to get the most they can while they can.

I know a lot of people worry about the salary cap, but in reality, it is not nearly the hindrance that fans believe it to be as teams have learned how to manage the "dead money" of their cap quite effectively.

So really, "early extensions" are, more times than not, beneficial to both the teams and the players.

wrong the steelers and giants BOTH PAID LT deals to both players and subsequently traded them after..THEY WANTED BELL, BELL SAID **, they missed the playoffs.. DONT act as if these teams made smart decsions.. they tried hard to keep their players and are now paying BIG Ben a ton..

I get what you are saying but dont use that as an example..they wont be better because of it other then financially..its tight rope letting go of elite talent over money and still hope to get to the playoffs..NE maybe the only ones and thats because toms playing for 19mil and Big Bill is the best coach on the planet..
Our team needs talent because we dont have this luury especially at coach and QB..cant say to hell wioth them all but you can try your best to juggle FT and Transtion tags and find out which ones derive to stay..

Ths steelers did a deal with Brown... several years earlier if I am not mistaken, and he wanted a new one early. Everone knew as soon as the Giants signed OBJ it was a bad deal, and so did the Giants. The Steelers used the hell out of LeVeon and then didnt give him the big deal he wanted, and instead let(cant think of his name) young rookie or 2nd year guy take over, and he did just fine. I personally think we should let Dak play, then tag him, and in that amount of time we will know exactly if he is or isnt woeth some 140 million dollar deal. JMO.

I didnt say Cowboys players had said anything. I was specifically referencing Ramsey because the Jags said they werenot going to extend him.... but, we all have heard grumblings about Zeke. He is starting the 4th season of a 5 year deal, and Id be shoced if Dak gets paid and then Zeke (next off season) isnt demanding to get paid before finishing his rookie deal as well.

Then it's one guy (Ramsey) that you know of that has actually made comments about not getting a new contract?

The other players like Zeke haven't actually said anything but you think Zeke will demand a new contract.

With regards to Ramsey, from what I've seen he has not demanded a new contract. He just mouthed off that his team will regret not giving him one.

The one he signed last year with the Giants. He was drafted in 2014 and signed a new contract in 2018.

With regards to the Browns, as I said before, when a trade is involved, a new contract is a different situation.

Most NFL players don't have a no-trade clause; however, players that are already past their rookie contracts have the power of a no-trade clause because teams don't trade for those types of players without getting on the same page as the player in regards to the contract.

Zeke is in a very different situation. RBs don't get $32+m contracts & they typically have much shorter careers.
