Nice article from Mickey and finding reliable kickers. Some interesting info on Maher and how he bounced around. But from the way I take it, being he is now the incumbent, he may improve.

Some other tidbits at the end too.

It's fine to point out that there are slim pickings at kicker, but to do nothing to try to challenge a kicker who only made 80 percent of his FG attempts last season is inexcusable. The only possible reason is that there appears to still be several unsigned kickers available , such as Cole Tracy and Marc Orozco, if Dallas needs to sign one. Of course, waiting to sign one could mean that player is gone when you want to sign him. I'd sign one and give him a chance to compete, then sign another if he fails until I find someone who can push for the job if Maher looks like an 80 percent kicker again.

We a shame. He missed his first kick and followed up by looking like money. Then all the sudden got scary..

I think they wanted to see all the players in the OTA's and mini camp.
come TC, they may sign a K to compete as the roster churn starts. Some OL or DB or WR will be released. Or several as the 89th and 90th man on the roster.

That was a worthless fluff piece if you ask me.

Not once does he discuss the fact that he was unreliable at the end of the year, just made excuses because he was tired and hey, we could be the Bears ya know?

Here's hoping Dallas finds someone better than Maher to handle their field goal kicking. He was way too shaky in his performance last year. There must be someone available who is more reliable than he is to handle that task. Field goal kicking is far too important to settle for what he has offered.

You know how valuable it is wasting a spot on the 90 man roster for a 2nd kicker? I mean, are you willing to cut a stud like Showers for a chance at at least getting a kicker battle this TC? Be real man, this is his year!

Can't take that chance, besides have you seen the Bears situation?

Ha,Ha,Ha,,, there's never a need,,regardless of such trivial fanciful flights of fearfully conceived force five pucker factor of foreboding fellers ,when Jason Garrett&Co. continue to remain in the good graces of the #38:thumbup:

I'd just rather start vetting them now. Should have brought one in during OTAs to give him time to prove he might be better than Maher. If not, cut him and bring another one in for minicamp. If that one fails, then try another one early in camp. Maher set a fairly low bar other than the long kicks that he made. Although that bar probably will still be higher than several kickers can reach, we won't know unless we try if there's a much better option out there.

The thing is for OTA's, it is used for installing the offense and defense, and to prepare them for what to expect in TC.
I understand what you are saying, and do not disagree. But I can also see the side, what can all the K's and P's really do at this time.

Wait until TC for when they really have to compete.
also the P, Redfern, can kick FG's to, and they gave him reps at that. So there is some competition there, though limited.

You can have a coach take them aside and let them kick field goals until the specialists are needed for special teams drills. What you need to see at this point is just how they kick. Long-snapper, holder and kicker are all that are needed for that. Oh, and a ball.

Frankly, I wouldn't mind if Dallas temporarily hired a kicking coach to work with them like we've done in the past. When we've got someone like Bailey, there's no need for one, but when we're uncertain at the position, having someone who knows how to play it couldn't hurt.

Training camp hasn’t started yet., so it’s premature to say there will be nobody there to challenge Maher. It’s unlikely Maher will be the only kicker at TC.

There's nobody there to challenge him now. That's all we can go by at this time.

That still doesn’t mean it makes sense to complain about something we know is likely to change.
