While trying to wrap my mind around the mind boggling contracts of NFL QBs, I found an interesting list of the highest paid NFL player positions. From the NFL site:

Non-Exclusive
POS: Franchise Tag Transition Tag

QB: $24.865 M $22.783 M

WR: $16.787 M $14.794 M

DE: $17.128 M $14.360 M

CB: $16.022 M $13.703 M

LB: $15.443 M $13.222 M

OL: $14.067 M $12.866 M

DT: $15.209 M $12.378 M

S: $11.15 M $9.531 M

RB: $11.214 M $9.099 M

TE: $10.387 M $8.815 M

K/P: $4.971 M $4.537 M

Exclusive franchise tag: A player who receives the exclusive franchise tag cannot negotiate with other teams.
The player receives a one-year deal for the greater of:
(a) the average of the five-largest salaries at his position at the conclusion of the restricted free agent signing period of the current league year
OR
(b) the amount of the non-exclusive franchise tag.
Last player to receive an exclusive franchise tag: Le'Veon Bell (with the Steelers in 2018).

Transition tag: A player who receives the transition tag is free to negotiate with other teams.
The player receives a one-year deal for the greater of:
(a) the cap percentage average of the top 10 greatest prior-year salaries at the player's position
OR
(b) 120 percent of his own prior-year salary.
Should such a player sign an offer sheet with a new team, his former team has five days to match the offer sheet.
However, should his former team decide not to match, there is no draft-pick compensation tied to the transition tag.

Last player to receive transition tag: Kyle Fuller (with the Bears in 2018).

Probably a lot closer to ten million bucks than five. They've been increasing at close to 2 mil annually for a while now. ;)
It's literally out of hand pertaining to these so called professional athletes. They should get paid on their performance and not just drop a ton of money on their lap as soon as they shake hands at the draft.

How many times have we seen players perform at their highest level only to be a disgrace after receiving a huge contact.

The OL Franchise Tag is based on the top 5
OL salaries.

The highest average is Trent Brown at 16.5M AAV.
Yeah, Tyron Smith gets about $12M AAV but only $22M practical guaranteed of $97M!
Safeties, RBs, and TEs get the least money on average but better than kickers.

The only way what you are talking about would work is if every contract were only for one year with the player being able to leave as a free agent after every season. You can’t lock a player in for multiple years without locking into a price.

RB (third from last) made my eyes bug out like Irvin at a free buffet.
