Pay attention coz I'm guessing this is the exact position Zeke will take before 2020 season. Trust me, these elite RBs are well aware of talks about spitting them out after their rookie deal. I said in a few threads, it's misguided to think they're going just play alone and not push back.

Melvin Gordon is taking a stand.

The Chargers running back, entering the fifth year of his first-round rookie deal, has informed the Chargers that he won’t report for training camp without a new contract, and that he’ll demand a trade. Gordon’s agent, Fletcher Smith, informed ESPN of the situation.

Gordon is due to make $5.605 million this year. He has been eligible for a second contract since the completion of the 2017 season.

It’s wise for Gordon to force the issue; injury and age can quickly diminish a running back’s value. The problem becomes even more pronounced for running backs taken in round one, since the fifth-year option is available to be used against them

Zeke was going to do that this offseason until he ended up sitting in front of Goodell once again.

And that will be the case next year, too.

I think the Cowboys want to use him up the next two years like they did Murray, then let him go.

You think these guys arent watching what is happening in the NBA where the players have taken total control of the league? BUt, alas, this

You think these guys arent watching what is taking place in the NBA where the players have taken control of the league? But, this is the NFL my friend. The Chargers must stand firm. This goes back to what I just posted about yesterday. Whats the point of having these rookie deals if the teams get held hostage everytime a player plays well during their rookie deal? I would fine his arse for every day and let him sit and rot before I gave him a new deal. Gordon has had 1 really good season and he thinks he deservs a new deal. Cmon chargers.... play hardball.

100% fan talk IMO.......remember Stephens ALREADY on record saying he deserved more than Gurley. A public statement like that from conservative Stephen Jones speaks volumes of their intent IMO. Hell, he even reminded everyone few months he needs Zeke to be patience.

That's great if you can win w/o him........problem is he, like Zeke, is a major part of what they do offensively. In fact, just read a stat from PPF last that showed Zeke was 2nd in the league ( behind Barkley) with the highest percentage of offensive plays.

Stephen Jones also said last year that a WR by committee would work and they didn't feel they needed to put money into the position given how they were set up offensively. Then 4 months later they traded a #1 pick and are about to make said WR one of the highest paid in football.

So frankly, what Stephen Jones says publicly should largely be taken with a grain of salt.

So, "100% fan talk" vs nothing more than "100 % Stephen Jones talk", since nothing has actually been done and nothing is on the horizon as to being done. Both carry the same real world weight - none.

Exactly. The tough talk when it comes to contracts is great. Then the same fans will be crying when the team goes 7-9 that season because one of their best players is at home on the couch.

Think a lot of fans forget are a certified run-first team. It's the way we are built....everything with this team starts and end with the running game. Stats will prove I'm not lying........

Well for one............ you can have a good running game without having an elite TB. The most recent run of SB winners have shown you can win, still run the ball and not invest a ton in the RB position. The Eagles won the SB in 2017 and they were 3rd in rushing............ with Ajayi, Clement, etc.

Two, if you need to pay Elliott all that money because he's so vital to the offense, then that should also tell you something about the logic that we have to make Dak a $34MM a year QB.

True but he's also never been shy about challenges of signing/keeping certain players ( Murray, Dez etc ).

Stats will also prove that not one, not two, but three running backs had great success running in this scheme with this line.

Chargers are notorious for being stingy so I think they won't cave right away.

I will say they the NFL allowed in the CBA for drafted rookie players the ability to ask for a new deal after their 3rd year of their mandated 4 year ELC. I can't blame guys for asking for some security, especially for a violate position like RB.

First rounders sort of get the shaft in regards to a 2nd contract where the team can exercise a 5th year on their contract which pays them based off position and draft position. MG would of been a FA had he been drafted in round 2 and either slapped with the tag or able to sign a long term deal elsewhere. Now on the flip side they get more money and guaranteed money from being drafted in round 1.

Now, we'll just see who caves first.

The Bell Effect at work. He's a no show and they do not have a good season and this year some are even picking the Chargers to get to the SB. Timing is everything as Booger learned with Emmitt.

All of the agents for RB's know what is happening as the other salaries climb, the RB position gets an * for injury possibility and shortened career.

But the fact is they play a position that is not as critical as it once was and pushing the envelope on salaries for RB's is going to be a tough climb, especially when they see the mistake the Rams made with Gurley.

Dude .....you're on a crusade. Any debate/discussion regarding Dak and I guess now Zeke is a waste of time ( at least for me). Respect your opinion but it doesn't change mind.

If I were in power in the NFLPA, I would stand the ground against the 5th year options on 1sts and tags. A team either signs their guy or he's available.

These players are in this for the money and I can't fault any for not showing up for an option or tag year. It has nothing to do with team loyalty and there's not a player on the Chargers team that will blame him.

I think Devonta Freeman was another mistake, although credit the Falcons for getting ahead of the jump in running back salaries. He's still relatively cheap, but has really fallen off after getting paid.
