Where does Dak Prescott rank among QBs in NFL?

Let's speak in reality.

You believe Prescott is better than Mahomes. If that's the case you would believe Prescott can throw for 5000 yards and 50 touchdowns in the same year. When have you seen anything watching Prescott that he has that ability in the passing game?

That is the flaw in Prescott. He is above average, but not great or elite. He just doesn't have the "it" in the passing game to elevate him to the top tiers of QBs.

This is just an example so don't take it the wrong way. Remember when some games Dallas wouldn't show up with a running game or defense and Romo would be asked to throw 40+ times for 400 yards and at least 3 touchdowns just to keep Dallas in the game. Well if you look at the very top QBs they have this trait. Once again, Prescott doesn't have this gear, he will never be a gunslinger. Not in his DNA.

Put Prescott on Kansas City and he would be like Alex Smith. Andy Reid would start him, but he would be looking to upgrade. All because of the passing game.

If Prescott were an elite QB, Dallas would be favorites. But he's above average, so they are just contenders.

Dak is somewhere from 12 to 17 imo. He's not accurate enough, yet. We have the best oline and RB in the league. But our offense is mediocre at best. Its not hard for an objective fan to figure out why that is the case. The QB is mediocre. So is the coaching staff.

I typically check out at the end of the season and don't return here (regularly, at least) until opening day closes in. Since this is the very first post I've ever seen that mentions Dak Prescott, how good he is/isn't, where he ranks in the pantheon of past/present/future QBs, whether he should be paid like a bum or a hero, etc., I'll weigh in (I know everyone has been waiting for my opinion):

Dak is the GOAT. The Cowboys should lock him up for 10 years at $50MM per. He's going to win 4 Super Bowls for us, so a half billion seems fair. I'm pretty sure we could field 9 total players on offense and still win 10 games with Dak under center. With that said, here is the only list that matters:

1. Dak Prescott - America's Team
2. The old dude in NE b/c he plays within a great system and would win maybe 6 games/year anywhere else.
3. Blake Bortles - The Rams franchise QB as soon as Goff flames out in game 3 this year. He's a HoF lock.
4. Troy Aikman (He'd be #1 if he'd quit yapping and puts some pads on)
5. Roger Staubach (He'd be #1 too if he'd quit making all that money and return to the NFL)
6-32. Does it really matter and does anyone really care?

For the bettors:

v. Giants - 21-7 (win)
@ Commanders - 31-14 (win)
v. Miami - 17-10 (win)
@ New Orleans 35-10 (loss)
v. GB - 24-21 (loss)
@ Jets - 10-3 (win)
v. Philly - 17-13 (win)
@ Giants - 41-13 (win)
v. Vikings - 17-14 (win)
@ Lions - 21-10 (loss)
@ NE - 17-7 (loss)
v. Bills - 28-17 (win)
@ Bears 20-16 (win)
v. Rams 28-6 (loss)
@Philly 17-3 (win)
v. Commanders 38=13 (win)

Record: 11-5, win division, win SB (obv)

The 2014 team didn't even have Sean Lee. Granted Rolando McClain chipped in, but by jove, the defense was so much weaker than what we have had over the past three seasons.

Interesting reading how our regular season defense has got on since Romo was our starting QB: - (these stats are accurate to the best of my knowledge but apologies if i've got any data wrong)

2006 - 13th ranked defense on YPG and 20th ranked defense on points conceded per game (6-4)
2007 - 9th ranked defense on YPG and 13th ranked defense on points conceded per game (13-3)
2008 - 8th ranked defense on YPG and 20th ranked defense on points conceded per game (8-5)
2009 - 9th ranked defense on YPG and 2nd ranked defense on points conceded per game (11-5)
2010 - 23rd ranked defense on YPG and 31st ranked defense on points conceded per game (1-5)
2011 - 14th ranked defense on YPG and 16th ranked defense on points conceded per game (8-8)
2012 - 19th ranked defense on YPG and 24th ranked defense on points conceded per game (8-8)
2013 - 32nd ranked defense on YPG and 26th ranked defense on points conceded per game (8-7)
2014 - 19th ranked defense on YPG and 15th ranked defense on points conceded per game (12-4)
2015 - 17th ranked defense on YPG and 16th ranked defense on points conceded per game (3-1)
2016 - 14th ranked defense on YPG and 5th ranked defense on points conceded per game (13-3)
2017 - 8th ranked defense on YPG and tied 13th ranked defense on points conceded per game (9-7)
2018 - 7th ranked defense on YPG and 6th ranked defense on points conceded per game (10-6)

I included the W-L records on the far right of Romo starting and then Prescott over the last three years.

Between 2010-2015 we had six years of awful to average defenses.
The O-Line was sorted from 2014.
2014 really was amazing from Romo when you consider the state of the defense.
2016 was very impressive from Prescott considering it was his rookie season.

Worst case we have had an above average regular season defense since Prescott has been the starter and last season would surely be labelled a good/very good regular season defense.

Interesting stats and people will make of them what they will but the reality is that having a good defense is pretty much imperative although as mentioned, 2014 was such an impressive season given our defense.

How would you rank Dak Prescott among the better QBs in the NFL ?

(in my book)
1 Tom Brady NE
2 Pat Mahomes KC
3 Aaron Rodgers GB
4 Drew Brees NO
5 Russell Wilson Sea
6 Jared Goff LARa
7 Matt Ryan ATL
8 Phillip Rivers LAC
9 Carlson Wentz Phil
10 Andrew Luck Indy
11 Ben Roesthlisberger Pitt
12 Deshaun Watson Hou
13 DAK PRESCOTT Dal * *
14 Matthew Stafford Det
15 Baker Mayfield Clev
16 Derek Carr Oak
17 Cam Newton Car
18 Mitch Trubisky Chic
19 Nick Foles Jax
20 Kirk Cousins Minn
actually new lists has Ryan and Baker in top 10 no wentz etc *** IDC where Dak ranks but Baker hasn't proven shizzle, he doesnt deserve top 10 on potential alone..in the NFL you prove it but those 2 dont derive top 10 IMO Ryans no better then Stafford or Cousins they put up numbers but arent top10 in real world views..well not in mine anyway..Dak making it top 15 is understandable..

People like pointing out W-L records but im sorry those are TEAM stats win and lose as team but at your postion how do you stack up against the rest and right now Bakers done squat and Ryan hasn't shown any more then Cousins or Stafford types yet on ESPN bakers in top 10 and Wentz is out, as Cowboy fan I hate saying his name but Wentz deserves it more..

many Rookie QBS have put up huge numbers and potential but never panned out you cant be handed top10 you earn IT

Imo Ryan gets too much hate. He is a former MVP. Made it to the SB (meanwhile the other two put up numbers but suck in big games, especially Cousins).

This is a but under the radar but if he keeps it up, he is going to be breaking a lot of the records Drew Brees is currently setting. He has shown no sign of regressing so far. He’d be near the top of my list right after Brady, Rodgers, Wilson, and Brees (left Mahomes off because it’s only been a year). Ryan and Luck would be the next two.

I love a good discussion, hope it didn’t come off as aggressive. Ryan is always up there statistically. It’s just hard for me to imagine any top ten list without him up there. Who do you put above him besides the obvious (Rodgers, Brees, Brady, Wilson)
