We hear about competition every year and the reality is the starting 22 has been established for the most part and even many backups. So who is actually 100% safe before camp this year?

QB (1)
Dak

RB/FB (3)
Zeke
Pollard
Olawale

WR (3)
Cooper
Gallup
Cobb

TE (3)
Witten
Jarwin
Schultz

OL (7)
Smith
Williams
Fred
Martin
Collins
McGovern
Fleming - thanks to his 2 year deal

DL (6)
Quinn
Hill
A Woods
DLaw
Crawford
Covington

LB (3)
Lee
LVE
Jaylon

CB (2)
Jones
Awuzie

S (1)
X Woods

ST (2)
LP
C Jones

That adds up to 31 total locks. There’s a lot of guys like Heath and Anthony Brown who are probably 90% but after the release of Bailey last year some things went down from 100% lock to me. Is there more competition than you thought?

Some of your locks are probably not locks.

I would add Anthony Brown as a lock. He is on a cheap contract. There is no reason to not keep him. He also will not be best out by any of the rookies. I am 98% certain on jourdan Lewis too.

Jeff Heath is also a 100% lock to make the team, barring injury of course. There is absolutely no chance he gets cut, whatsoever.

Nice topic and post btw.

Seems reasonable. However, preseason can be a fickle mistress.

My only quibbles...

Unless another S steps way up, Heath’s a lock. Also, I doubt they cut Looney, as he’s a proven backup C who can also play guard.

I think it comes down to Looney and Sua Filo. Sua Filo when he was healthy was great his first 2 starts. Then he had the foot problems and fell apart. Also knowing McGovern may be able to play all 3 interior spots could make it interesting.

Injury-plagued Sua Filo’s two starts notwithstanding, Looney proved himself over a full season at the center position; he won’t be easy to dislodge. That McGovern “may be able”, etc, is an unknown. Agree that it will be interesting.

The players in bold may not be locks. Some of them will make it obviously. But none of these guys would surprise me if they are not on the opening day roster.

Perhaps 6 or 7. That might be high. Any trade would lower that number. Any player getting paid more but not showing he is worth it will get cut. Most draft picks will make it so I'm not counting those spots up for grabs.

You need to move Pollard to 1st and Zeke to the cut list.

Fleming - thanks to his 2 year deal

Fleming's 2 year deal is only an option at a probably too high price for the 2nd year. Shouldn't factor much at all in whether we keep him or not. Looks like one of those face saving future years that just aren't going to happen. Or at least that we hope isn't going to happen.

In terms of contract, we could easily move on from him this year. All we'd have to eat is 1.5mil.

I think we need the depth at T, but some people are excited about our down roster Ts. Lots of moving parts with McGovern, Williams, and Collins.

Fleming can go if enough young guys are ready, and that's reasonably likely.
