In fairness, the Cowboys basically expected him to walk in and make an impact. They did nothing at DT, which was a need, other than bring in a backup type in Covington.

So the Cowboys might try to sell this notion that they drafted Hill for down the road but their actions show they thought he could be a player for them this year.

And he still might. I won't worry until we get a few games in and he's getting the Taco treatment. Then I'll start to worry.

Well, Collins should be the starter unless he fractures his foot again. And then of course they got the dull swiss army knife in Crawford.

What 2nd round DT comes in and starts day 1? That's incredibly rare. Some 1st rounders don't even start day 1 at the 1t or the 3t.

I'm sure they expected for him to be apart of the rotation but I doubt they expected him to start day 1. They didn't even expect LVE to start day 1.

Defensive tackle is a huge weakness on this team.

If Hill can't contribute right away, it will be the Achilles heel of the defense yet again.

They didn't address it except with this pick.

what I don't want to see is the same kind of non productive Niners-like game performance from a valued 2nd round pick draftee, who is getting 33 snaps vs 2nd and 3rd stringers in ALL of these preseason games.

That still shouldn't be declare him as" Bust' , but should he not show up in ANY preseason game, that could mean that Hill is so far behind in development in so many phases
(conditioning. techniques, NFL speed, etc) that he may just not be ready and prepared to handle significant amount of snaps in the DT rotation this season, especially early on in the year.

some DL guys takes some time to develop- some more longer than others.
But as valued and highly touted as he was as a 2nd round pick, i'd like to at least see a few glimpses and flashes.

But if Hill flats out in the preseason, that could also mean that should there yet another Maliek injury occuring, it won't likley be Hill that as the next man up,..it will more likely be another rotation guy, ala Chris Covington, etc. getting the nod instead.

The worst case scenario ?
if Hill is made game inactive/coaches decision for much of the season. That would instantly mean he will be made to be next year's project instead.

I would at least hope is that Hill is good enough to get enough snaps and production to learn and grow and that he eventually be a much improved, better player - by season's end.

Hill was a 3/4 that Dallas reached for in round 2. 3/4s should never be considered a bust. They usually aren’t. Better called projects. Hill is a project. He is a big man with good feet, strength and natural twitch. His issue is that he is not a very good football player. He did not play a lot in college. Lots of good athletes through the years have been drafted high but weren’t good football players and washed out. It has only been 1 preseason game. Too early to give up on Hill. I think fans need to dramatically recalibrate expectations though. Guy is a project. It is not his fault the Cowboys were stupid to reach for him.

Last year Derrick Nnadi 3rd Poona Ford udfa. Too early for bust talk but definitely an inflated pick

They signed Covington as a FA and Woods is back for his 2nd year, Collins is a force when healthy, which he is for now. Hill was drafted to be part of the rotation.
Then there is Crawford who does many under appreciated dirty work stuff to free up the DE's to do their jobs.
I am not a big fan of Crawford, and he is overpaid. But he is not a horrible player either.

They addressed the issue, we just need to see the results if it worked.
Oh and the signed Hyder who can also play DT in needed.

Scouting reports, physical skillset, athleticism, and awesome performance at the Senior Bowl. What do you rate players on, reading the back of your Cheerios box?
I don't rate college players. I'm not one of these guys that pretends like I know every player in the draft. I know a select few. I leave that to you experts. I evaluate them once they get to the pros.

Khalen Saunders was the guy I wanted over Hill. I betcha he becomes a better player.
Me too. Please feel free to revisit this thread in a couple years when Saunders is dominating while Hill is floundering. If I am wrong, I will acknowledge it.

We overdrafted Hill based on hoopla. He should've been a mid round pick. Not his fault.

One of the worst things that ever happened was Byron turning out to be a good player. Gave us the confidence to take similar players early.

I keep seeing threads and posts about Hill being a bust.
Now this is the usual crap from the sky is falling and the Debbie downers, and the usuals that do not like anything.

But to listen to the team, they are are happy with his play and his progress. They liked his never give up attitude and the power the shows. They thought he had a good effort and game against SF. Garrett did say he need to learn still. But they like his progress and he looks the player that knew they drafted.

One PS game and the guy did not have 17 sacks like fans want, so now he is the next player such as LVE was last year, labeled a bust. Typical crap.

Too early to call him a bust but disappointed that we didn't see those flashes of brilliance that you'd expect from a 1st or 2nd rd pick.
