And this kid was comfortable enough to call a grown man by his first name. That's disrespectful.
It is learned behavior. Children see, hear and repeat what adults do. It happens everywhere. Television. Radio. Internet. For example, it is common to read this forum and see 'Dak, Zeke, Jerry, Jason, Troy, Emmitt, Tony' etc. First names. Nicknames. Postings created by adults and young people alike. "It's no big deal." "They will never know." "Who is it hurting?" It is what it is.

lol...YES...that's true...but its a sporting event where its ok to be not so proper...TIME FOR FUN...and ya know, the kid was likely star struck and so maybe his words came out wrong. DLAW is the adult btw...not the kid. NEXT.

If that is applicable, Lawrence should be excused along with the child.

ITS ALL SPECULATION BY ALL OF US. It was mishandled , we can all agree on that. The optics were much worse than reality of it. But in sports when your a Dallas cowboy, optics are King. THEY MATTER.

now see I am old school..but REALLY MAN? Its perfectly normal for a kid to say that..in that setting at THAT VENUE. Its a sporting event...even while in a parking lot. Its a time for fun and letting ones "hair down." Maybe the dad has issues, that's pure speculation and besides the point. Stay on point. "Raising the kid the right way?" We cannot glean anything as far as did he raise the child right. That's going out WAY OUT on a limb like your trying too hard.
I always called adults by their first names when I was a kid. The one exception was teachers. And I think I was raised pretty well.

True. Much can be questioned and speculated every day of our lives. Take the video for example.

We see a young man. The young man identifies Lawrence. We speculate he has the recognition skills of discerning who Lawrence is and what Lawrence does for a living.

We see a young man wearing sports apparel. We can speculate the young man understands what his clothing represents and comprehends the differing symbolism of his jersey from the one he has seen Lawrence wear.

We can speculate the young man has experienced the sights and sounds of the environment he has been introduced into. He has heard how the dozens of individuals he has come into informal contact have discussed the team belonging to the jersey he wears. He has heard comments made by crowds of folks wearing the jersey of the other team. He has heard jokes, expectations, fears, demands--typical stuff heard at any venue of any sport around the world.

We can speculate the young man believes, in all sincerity, that his earnest request will be granted despite all things he has experienced. And why should he? He has see Lawrence's teammates swap uniforms just like he has seen teammates of his favorite team swap uniforms with the opposing team. Adults do it. Why shouldn't he? It is all good.

...until Lawrence provides him a different perspective of the one world he shares with the player.

I speculate the young man has gained a new and important learning experience that will be beneficial for him in life: "Think before you act."

he was star struck I imagine. I know when I was around his age, I would have been. Not sure what he learned exactly.

ditto..same here. I met Dennis Johnson, the NBA player when I was with my Dad working for a truck rental co.in SO Cal in about 1985. I was helping my Dad for extra money on a Saturday...who walks up wanting to rent a Truck? Dennis Johnson..DJ they call him. I WAS IN AWE. I was stammering lol..my Father had no clue who he was at all. I was a Laker fan...but on that Day, I became a lifelong Boston Celtic fan because ehe was very gracious to me, patient, understanding as heck. All around cool cat. He took pictures with me, signed his autograph and even signed a Topps card he had with him for me. You wont meet a better man. May he rest in peace. So I guess, when I seen what happened in the DLAW video..I just had to say somethin. Because I had my own experience. DLAW lost an opportunity to change a kids life...but he still can.

Understandable. Every person who ever lived, is living, or will one day live, does not think exactly the same as anyone else. Think similarly in given situations? Yes. Exactly the same? No.

Like all adults, I was his age once. I was star struck by players of other teams, too. On more than one occasion, I had come into close proximity to players just like him... when I was his age... and did not ask for an autograph. Perhaps reasoning kicked in over personal desire. Who knows?

Like I said. Everyone does not think exactly the same as anyone else. Age is not always an indisputable justification. Unless the person is a toddler. Or an infant. And do not 'know' or 'care' any better.
Not sure what he learned exactly.
That is also understandable.

Where I'm from, I would have had to call him Mr. Lawrence...or get a spanking for not showing respect.
Hmmm..,

I understand not every kid is going to get an autograph but cmon it’s a kid

I grew up in a Commanders area had cowboys jerseys on met some Commanders fans and cheerleaders in full blown cowboys gear and got autographs from art monk and Darrell green and Stephen alexander who were more than happy to sign them

Maybe it’s just me but it’s not a good look to do that

You also listed players from the 80s and 90s

A time when social media and camera phones didn’t pick up EVERYTHING.

I’m sure for every nice “awe shucks sure bro I’ll sign” there was 100s of times they pulled a Dlaw to a fan/kid

Word of advice don’t put these dudes on such a pedestal that your kids think their something their not...
