Can we move on from Marinelli?

Shouldve moved on from him years ago.

He will be our downfall once again
As excited as I am about this years squad my enthusiasm is tempered. And that is based on the shear fact that this defensive scheme has indeed been a big letdown come playoff time.

This is a playoff team. Good defensive teams advance.

It’s do or die for Rod.

I do not see that as a reason to have him at DC. They had a DB draft for him to work with and we don't know if some other coach would have done as well or better.

I do like his aggressive style better than Marinelli's BDBD.

Byron Jones was well out of position and turned into a pro bowl corner. Maybe another coach does that, but it wasn't another coach. Year 1 at corner.

We've played one game and won handsomely. No need to panic because we gave up yards. I expect to see improvements.

Crawford is a JAG. You must be on crack.

He isn’t though. He’s a good player who happens to be a punching bag because of his contract, and you just can’t tell the difference.

This is a good defense, and a good defensive coaching staff. You’re barking at cars because you like Richard. That’s fine. Fans do that sort of stupid stuff all the time, but it doesn’t make it right.

I think the the original post has got too much about his age (which is irrelevant), and not enough about substance.

You didn't see the playoff game either? After that you fire the DC and/or HC. Mot teams would, the Cowboys keep theirs and praise his name. lol

This is part of the problem!!
Yes, it is the major problem. Why does he hire the coaches he hires?

If you saw that All or Nothing episode when he addressed Elliott's "rough time' with his suspension with all of the coaches around the table, that was very revealing about the dynamics of the Cowboys coaching staff. There is no question in my mind that the Joneses are too involved with the coaching staff and team, I just don't know how bad it is but that sure wasn't helped when Booger publicly gave his wet behind the ears new OC permission to circumvent the HC and come to him "if anyone is in his way".

Most coaches are just asked to do their job but with the Cowboys keeping the owner happy is part of that job. I always wonder how much of what I am seeing on the field was at the "suggestion" of the owner? The most dangerous owner is one that thinks he knows more than he really does.

Should he have went with Iloka? lol And this is a group making these decisions. Garrett, Rod, Jerry they're all in on it. When you have limited options then you're kind of stuck.
Cue the "we should have brought the broken Eric Berry in" crowd

But keeping Marinelli around doesn't fix this or make it better. Despite a meddling owner this team looks the best it has in decades. And can start competing for championships. Surprisingly enough! Yes the dynamics are ridiculous, but at the moment someone is doing something right. Young quality team. Is that despite Jerry? Who knows, but I think a new defensive philosophy falls in line with where this team is headed. Marinelli at 70, isn't it time anyway? A gold watch and a thank you for your years of service.

As do I but that doesn't mean I will see that. There were some assumptions made that this D was improved from last season with no visual evidence of that.

Many fall into that "uniform trap". When a player dons yours, he automatically becomes better. Many fall in love with a player(s) and expect more out of him than his talent will allow.

I expect this D to play better than they did in that opening game because if they don't, they're going nowhere this season. G, if you watch that game again, look for one thing, the positioning of the D players. They did not improve from that disaster in LA. LVE and Smith didn't look any better despite all of those rave reviews from last year, the DL got handled and it was the Giants own ineptitude that kept the game from being a shootout.

I tell you, its Garrett. As soon as Dallas gets a big lead, they play a ridiculously soft defense and just run the ball up the middle until they punt. Strategic decisions like that fall on the head coach. Its a recipe for giving up lots of yards and points.

The better the offense performs the worse the defense is going to look because if for some reason Dallas actually got a 30 point lead, Garrett may demand that the defense lay on the ground pre-snap.

Well, he's not going anywhere this season and we don't know the future of the HC either and he's the one responsible for Marinelli being here through Kiffin.

However, look around the league, how many great DC's do you see? How about ex DC's turning into HC's?

It's too early in the season to tell but after watching the opening weekend and TNF this wasn't about great D's, it was about poor O's and lack of execution on just some basic plays. I would say the Cowboys are in the same boat as the majority of the teams, we don't know yet how this is going to shake out. You can't have the fewest snaps played by starters in preseason in history and know a lot yet.

To be clear, this is not a pro- or anti- coach post, but rather one focused on the players.

To me, it looked more like there were several players out of position and/or not hitting their (or the right) gaps against the Giants.

In any case, I judge the team by points allowed, not yards allowed. The defense allowed 17 points, which I will take any week.

If they start allowing a lot of points each game, then ALL of the defensive coaching staff should be put under microscope, not just one or two.

Good teams will score points. You cant let them march up and down the field. Hence our last 3 playoff exits were solely on the shoulders of the defense

he does have choice who he plays at safety.. hes chosen Heath and heath as captain.. comes on hes part of a team and staff hes the ADC and full passing game coordinator and they arent stopping a sneeze right now..you win and lose as a team and hes a big part of this defense and its struggling of late..

Maybe I. Am wrong, but I thought the players chose the captains?
